So nice to hear this again! The story of how this recording of the Miserere came about is told in Barry Rose's fabulous book: "Sitting on a Pin", p283-284. One of my most treasured memories in a long career as a sound recording engineer. For me, it all began here!
Oh wow what a special recording!!! Anything by Barry Rose and Guildford is incredible, but to hear them sing Miserere in English at 28:28 is stunning... The second recording of Miserere of any British choir, after the truly legendary Roy Goodman/Willcocks recording at Kings in 1963. And in English as it was at a time when Latin was not widely sung in Anglican churches!
@@ArchiveofRecordedChurchMusic Wow if an expert such as yourself thinks this, it truly must make the grade! I think both are splendid and very special!
The words of the wonderful piece by Gibbons at 20:14 Drop, drop, slow tears, And bathe those beauteous feet Which brought from Heaven The news and Prince of Peace. Cease not, wet eyes, His mercy to entreat; To cry for vengeance Sin doth never cease. In your deep floods Drown all my faults and fears; Nor let His eye See sin, but through my tears.
Fantastic sound as I remember listening to the choir in the late 1960,s Evensong was special and rehearsal was an education with Barry.

Hello Nick, good to hear from you again! I had forgotten about the story in the book, which I have just re-read!

I treasure my CD of the 1963 recording, but this is beautiful too.
@@anselman3156 My copy of the CD is the most played in my collection!
Wow- I’ve never heard this recording before, and IMHO it surpasses the KCC version. Utterly outstanding!
Almost heresy to say so! However, I entirely agree with you.

The words of the wonderful piece by Gibbons at 20:14
Drop, drop, slow tears,
And bathe those beauteous feet
Which brought from Heaven
The news and Prince of Peace.
Cease not, wet eyes,
His mercy to entreat;
To cry for vengeance
Sin doth never cease.
In your deep floods
Drown all my faults and fears;
Nor let His eye
See sin, but through my tears.
Anything featuring the ‘Doc’ is sure listening here. Is he directing from the organ here?
Hadn’t read😊 the notes.
