  • Listening to Song of Myself by #Nightwish for the first time. This might have been the one that struck me the most at first listening. What a tremendous creation this song is - utterly smashed this one out of whatever sport reference this is suppose to be from!!! This song had me floored (really no pun intended as I debated for about ten minutes if I should phrase it like this or not) and soaring way up there, all at the same time!

    The Metal Gods looked down from the Heavens and spoke these words to all of mankind. I have blessed you on this day of 02/21/1981 ( Floor’s Birthday) an Angel of Metal and she will be known as Floor Jansen.

    This is indeed no song, it's an experience. I heared this song at least a hundred times and I still got chills, tears and this song evokes so much emotions. BRILLIANT MASTERPIECE 👏👏👏. I feel your emotions....

    It truly is a pleasure watching the pleasure you derive from these performances. This entire show is magical - you have to know they were pointing to this festival when the tour kicked off in 2012 as the high point and when it seemed it was eluding them in the middle of the tour and when Floor filled in and seamlessly took the songs as her own it was just a perfect collision of events. You smashed the reaction out of the park, great job.

    Always love your reactions to NW, they are such an amazing band, I have been on this old globe for over 7 decades and heard a fair amount of music, but never has a band brought such emotions to me as NW especially with Floor singing. Tarja and Annette have beautiful voices and stirred a little emotion in me, but Floor has raised my blood pressure for battle, and brought tears to me, and of course Floorgasms. Her voice blends so beautifully with Marcos, Tuomas writes such wonderous works, Emppu plays solos so masterfully that every song is a master piece. I can and do listen to them every day. Keep the reactions coming

    Notice that the audience roared when they heard Floor hit that high Major 7th at the end of her duet with Marko. We love Marko and we miss him greatly. We hope he will rejoin Nightwish at some point in the future.

    I love how Nightwish pays homage to other heavy metal bands in some of their songs! I hear some of the Metallica song "One" in this song and some of their song "Enter Sandman" in "The Greatest Show on Earth".... really classy of them to do that!

    This is the one song that people become very involved with.The time changes, the heavy, total musicianship, the singing of Marko and Floor, the total involvement of the audience with the music and Floor, the slow, heavy headbanging of the second half and Floor's low Alto vocals; all of that is just mesmerizing. Listen to the heavy emphasis on the tonic chord every 16 beats in the second half. The London Symphony choir throughout the song. Floor's total commandment of her audience. And then Marko and Floor at the end with the pyro. All are testament to the genius of Tuomas Holopainen. We call him the Metal Mozart.
    I forgot to mention the total badassery of the drummer, Jukka Nevaleinen, and Floor's monster High Major Third in the last chord.
    This was Nighwish Mother Ann Waychoff's favorite song. She was in her 60s living somewhere in Pennsylvania USA and became infatuated with Nightwish and, along with all their songs, Song Of Myself. We all miss her and will never forget her.

    I only just found your channel, and have been watching your Nightwish reactions this morning. Really enjoying them! How much you love the band and the music really comes through, and I'm with you there! I only discovered them maybe 8 months ago or so, but they are maybe the best thing I have ever randomly found. They've become my favorite band of all time. Recently went to see them live for the first time in NYC and was blown away. Really need to see them again! Best show I have ever seen. So much talent, but Floor - mesmerizing. Unbelievable. Thanks for these reactions!

    Upptäcka = to detect, discover, find. Bothered me too what it is exactly in English so I googled.
    "Song of myself" is a great song, high on the list of the best Nightwish songs for many. Lots of interesting elements in one song. I guess that should not be a surprise knowing Tuomas' songwriting.
    Hard to think of anyone harmonizing with Floor like Marko. I guess they can find someone, Jarkko Ahola?, who can sing very well, and even play the bass at the same time, but there is only one Marko.
    After Kai took over after Jukka, everyone says Kai is a great drummer, but fans still miss Jukka, he is such fun to watch.

    Constanza, I hope you also listen to the Song as a whole. Especially that part 4 although never performed live is worth to listen too. As you close looks at the lyrics you’ll notice that there are several references to other songs, like: ‘Ghost River’, ‘Dead Boy’s Poem’. Also I would recommend the last sentence written on the screen: “And there forever remains that change from G to E minor”. “G to E minor” played a great role in the Imaginaerum Movie, It’s the name the old man (Played by Tuomas) had given his daughter: Gem (G.E.m.).
    Part 4. Lyrics (studio version, but also part of the movie plot.
    I see a slow, simple youngster by a busy street, with a begging bowl in his shaking hand. Trying to smile but hurting infinitely
    Nobody notices. I do, but walk by.
    An old man gets naked and kisses a model-doll in his attic. It's half-light and he's in tears. When he finally comes his eyes are cascading.

    3:33 The "Jukka did something there" is actually holding playing steady 4/4 over 7/8 odd time. So first bar is played like this 1(2)3(4)5(6)7 - notes in brackets are a snare hits. Second bar is played like first bar so you need to skip one eight note to be again on 2,4 and 6 with a snare. But on a third bar you dont skip note so you land on 1,3,5 and 7 with a snare. And this is what Jukka actually is doing here. And because he continue with this 4/4 feel he lands on 2,4 and 6 on a final fourth bar. So to sum up it goes like this: 1(2)3(4)5(6)7|1(2)3(4)5(6)7|(1)2(3)4(5)6(7)|1(2)3(4)5(6)7. As you can see between first and Second bar there is one extra eight note. But between Second third and fourth bar a snare is played evenly every two eight notes giving this common 4/4 feel rythm. Hope I do not overexplain it and also that it helps to understand whats going on in that rythm.

    Are you feeling that 7/8 time signature in the verse? Then in the second & fourth part it switches to 8/8 straight time. I love the lyrics to this song. You will notice all of the song references in just the first verse. Storytime, River Ghosts (Ghost River), Mermaids (Turn loose the Mermaids), of Whitman's (Song of Myself), and the Ride (Last Ride of the Day). All from the Imaginaerum record as is this one. It was inspired by a famous poem of the same name by Walt Whitman. You may like part IV of this song which is a long spoken poem. It would not be appropriate at a metal festival, but if you check out the studio version you can hear it. Loved it Constanza! 💖💖💖🎶🎶🎶🤘🤘🤘😊👍

    Check also the longer album version with the poem in the end. A complete masterpiece again by Tuomas....so many layers and intelligent moves and tricks...yes...in the backround happens so much too. Jukka really drums this to top.

    Good ear on what Jukka is doing,. He's playing straight time over 7/4 in the verse, but every few measures adds an up beat to switch the down beat. I haven't worked it out, yet, but it's very clever.

    Yes, Constanza, you're right - Floor's voice is also an instrument and the band a unit where either her voice (and Marko's) are primary or her voice is another great instrument among the other beautifully and skillfully played instruments..

    One of most common comment to this song is "I don't want it to end".. I hope I will get to see this song live. It's just amazing. You will also love the last song of this concert. Great reaction.. Stayed until the end.. Just because it deserves to be listened 2 times. Stay safe🤘😁🤘

    Nice to see you again! This was really a very nice reaction of this song, i also like this song very much! I think it's not a song who you think first when you where ask for a Nightwish song, but i also think most people love this song to, specially live! I love when Floor and Marco sing together, they sound so good! Or in the begin when Floor sing so deep, and than up to 100! I like this part.
    I hope we see you next week! With the last Wacken song! 😭😉🤘

    That opening verse, where the drums first come in, is in 7/4. In a couple of parts Jukka plays even numbers over the odd time - 3 bars of 4/4 then a 2/4 over the top of the band doing 2 bars of 7/4. (And the second verse as well)

    The time signature changes from standard 4/4 to the 'incomplete' 7/8, if I'm not mistaken. This song is one of the best of the show for me, and that's saying a lot.
    From the Imaginaerum album, so the latest at that point, original with Annette, but Floor nails it.
    Studio original has a long spoken outro with different voices participating, lyrics are closely related to the movie Imaginaerum.

    Such a great song, one of the absolute best from Nightwish in my opinion. I actually do rate it above both versions of GLS, there's only The Greatest Show and Poet above Song of Myself - If I had to put them in some kind of order. The lyrics of Song of Myself are loaded with references to other NW songs, it's definitely one that can handle a lot of relistening and studying the buried meanings. Not only that, but there are so many amazing individual lines of lyrics in it. Just to highlight a couple that you might have picked up on the way...

    The original version on Imagenaerum is way longer at 13 minutes and 30 seconds in length and divided into four parts:[42]
    "From a Dusty Bookshelf" (0:00-0:23): The instrumental intro of the track.
    "All That Great Heart Lying Still" (0:23-3:35): The first half of the actual song.
    "Piano Black" (3:35-6:53): The second half of the actual song.
    "Love" (6:53-13:30): The entire second half of the complete track, containing nothing but ambient symphonic metal music and spoken narrations.
    It is inspired by the poem Song of Myself by Walt Whitman who is Toumas' fave poet.
    Of course, the live version is much shorter but i feel that its a better version of the song. IMO

    Great song and great performance. So hypnotic at the end. If i remember right, you are currently going through this Wacken 2013 (in order). Props for that! Lot of goodies waiting for you with Tampere 2015 and Buenos Aires 2018 👍
