That's true, but it's a subset of the students practicing there. There are all levels practicing at the Sharath Yoga Centre (SYC). The minimum requirement is having spent 3 months practicing with a SYC qualified practitioner. The requirement is less about reaching a specific standard (as most people will only learn the very basics in this time) but to ensure the student is familiar with the format and require etiquette (cleanliness, timeliness, focus during practice etc) so they can focus on the practice itself when they get to Mysore, rather than have to get acquainted with these fundamentals.
Sharath sir all blessings to you. Fantastic control of crowd with respect, discipline and alligned in learning thought. It's simply awesome. Feel like visiting your ashram, see you and seek your blessings. Let's see whether God fulfills and blesses me with that. Jaigurudev
When it comes to "Ashtanga Yoga", everyone talks about KPJAYI and Sharath Rangaswamy. So yea being a middle order working class Indian myself who can't afford or access a good Ashtanga yoga teacher in my city (Bombay) nor can afford enough time for "Mysore pilgrimage", I'm trying to figure what initiative has Pattabhi Jois or Sharath taken to spread the knowledge and awareness of ashtanga in India. I doubt if they have taken any. Hence Im not surprised to see only foreigners in this video. The only "Indian" in here it seems is Sharath himself hahaha
I think its a matter of taking initiative and the commercial benefits. The course requires you to be in the center for two months. How many of us are willing to take two months off from our work and practice Yoga ? The attendees in this session go back to their respective Countries and open up studios and charge steep amounts to teach Yoga. Yoga is commercially viable in the US and not much in India. People who are genuinely interested in Yoga attend multiple centers spread throughout our Country. Getting a certificate from the Jois center is like getting a certificate from an Ivy League University in Yoga. It gives the participants enormous credibility back home. So the cost and time justifies their participation. Not so much for Indians.
Suganth Muthaiyan so let me tell you why you wouldn't many indians over there at KPJAYI. Most indians are working class / lower middle class indians who can't afford a "yoga vacation" of even a month. Forget taking two months off then. This is got nothing to do with how "committed" we indians are. And let me point out that Ashtanga yoga became quite popular in the west not just coz the Westerners would travel to Mysore but because Pattabhi Jois and Sharath have been doing annual workshops in almost every major metropolitan in Europe and America. And I'm trying to understand why does Sharath need to conduct his annual workshops in the west now coz there are already so many senior teachers in the west who perhaps have an equal of more amount of experience teaching than Sharath himself. Take the US for instance where you have teachers like Richard Freeman, Tim Miller, Maty Ezraty, Dave and Doug Swenson etc. And for that matter even Manju Jois. But yea people in the west don't even care to respect these teachers as much as Sharath coz it's a self induced notion by Westerners which makes Sharath supreme than even those teachers in the west who perhaps have more years of experience than him. Why can't Manju Jois have the authority to certify? (if at all that 'Jois' as your last name matters much) Ashtanga yoga is not a patented product of KPJAYI btw. Ideally, Sharath can't claim to be the only "authority" to certify people. But yea Pattabhi Jois and Sharath were given this kind of godly status thanks to their early batches of western students who for their own greed turned l Ashtanga yoga into a totally commercial enterprise. And yea that's precisely why neither Jois nor Sharath were/are really concerned about taking any workshops in India. Also the handful of indians who make it to KPJAYI (look at this pic btw and you'd easily estimate how many Indians are even there practising in the first place) conduct really expensive classes. Here in Bombay there's only one "authorized" teacher who runs real expensive class. Plus these select few "authorised" Indian teachers are travelling to different countries conducting their workshops abroad. So yea moral of the story is Ashtanga yoga is not meant for a large majority of Indians at all.
shivin varghese , shivin varghese , as I know Sharath has separate yoga class for Indians , including different classes for old, sick and injured people. This is because Indians and westerners have a different state of mind, perception of the world. And not in the bad way, but just westerners are much more focused on the result and they put a lot of energy toward the practice. Indians people are more relaxed, they not hurry up and I think they prefer their practice be more like slow---> different countries --->different mind and perception of the practice. By the way there is one Indian girl as I see, her name is Deepika Mehta. No matter, who practicing Ashtanga or not, yoga is about different thing. Also, because of different style of life westerners really get help of this method of yoga, that why there are so many of them. Peace!:)
Yana Malkova I have been to Mysore back in 2012 only after collecting a good amount of info on ashtanga yoga. And since I live in Bombay I know of Deepika Mehta since then. Now, firstly, although she is a seasoned practitioner, she is hardly here in India to teach. I've contacted her myself for one of the few workshops she happened to conduct but it was super expensive. Similarly here in bombay there happens to be only resident ashtanga yoga teacher presently (his name is Suveer Balvi). I checked with him as well and even his classes are not at all affordable. Secondly, I am also well aware of the so called "afternoon batches for Indians" by Sharath Rangaswamy. Now from what I don't understand is if Ashtanga yoga, as Pattabhi Jois and Sharath claims, is a spiritual practice for all, then why should there be separate batches for Indians and a "discounted fee for Indians"? Again the ones attending this afternoon batches, I think these select few indians are locals from Mysore who are not learning it so as to become teachers and teach. And they are nothing in numbers compared to the hundreds of foreigners who attend the morning batches. And lastly, did you just point out that Indians are lazy and foreigners aren't? Perhaps you should live your life in a metropolitan with working class indians and you will be convinced that INDIANS ARE NOT LAZY!! For starters, you Westerners wouldn't be thronging in Mysore to learn ashtanga yoga coz Krishnamacharya, Pattabhi Jois, Iyengar were all Indians ok. My 60 year old mother travels to and from work in bombay for 4 hours everyday. Something I'm sure even your Guru Sharath might not imagine of doing it for a day. You Westerners just come to Mysore and you hardly see any Indian practising Ashtanga yoga alongside you and therefore you just conclude that Indians are lazy? wow! There are many Indians like me who aspire to learn more but cannot. You know why? Coz since the 1970s, more and more dollar and euro spending Westerners who could easily afford a "yoga vacation" have been traveling to Mysore every year to live and study there for months. It is the Westerners who influenced KPJAYI to come up with things like "authorization" and "certification". It is the Westerners who influenced KPJAYI to start charging more and that's precisely the reason why even their so called "discounted rate for Indians" seemed to be unaffordable by me when I made my Mysore visit. It is the Westerners who still throw money and have lured Pattabhi Jois and Sharath to conduct workshops in your countries for their own selfish objectives and since then they have been the least interested in conducting workshops in India. And so how are we indians expected to be exposed to this style of practice then? The select few "indians" you are referring to like Deepika Mehta were from financially well off families which is why they could afford the 'Mysore time' to learn and then teach. O btw Deepika Mehta is married to an Australia based teacher Mark Robberds and she is hardly in the country now. Fact is this - We Indians are largely middle order working class people whose per capita income is much much lesser compared to any westerner. Wonder why most American and European companies have their simple desk jobs outsourced to India? Coz it's cheap and aren't skill based jobs which the Westerners don't wanna do it themselves. We Indians don't get long paid leaves like you Westerners get. And we Indians don't get any sort of financial support from the government during times of unemployment or any sort of social security (for instance, I've met a man who came from Netherlands to study at KPJAYI when he was unemployed and he was in india for months already). Fact is since very few indians can afford it, even fewer make it to the list of "authorised" teachers and these folks make Ashtanga yoga classes really expensive thanks to that influence which they take from the western practitioners they meet in Mysore. And since Sharath and his predecessors never bothered to conduct any workshops in atleast the cities of India, chances of Ashtanga yoga being exposed to indians look super bleak. So yea even in 2017 a 32 year working class indian like me is struggling to find an ashtanga yoga teacher (who is affordable in d first place) in a city like Bombay in times where Ashtanga yoga is flourishing with more studios and teachers in almost every major metropolitan of the world - be it New York, London, Madrid etc. Thus, look at this video and try spotting indians here. Its not coz "indians are lazy". There is another major and genuine reason why it is like that so
shivin varghese , man, did I say "lazy"? Ready carefully please and note such worlds "not in the bad way". One good person told me once that each of us see from different perspective, for now I can only see that u r too much negative and u need to spread out your vision out of box. Again, I love India and I respect Indians, I had before many friends when I was living not in my mother land. I think that India is very rich cultural country with so much huge wisdom. One day, I wish I will visit it. I haven't been in India and in kpjai, I'm living in Russia and here also very expensive classes, that why I never attend one, and practicing only by myself at home. But u know, this is reality and u can't just ask them to change the cost. If u like this method, ok, practice it by yourself as me! If u want to become a teacher, so go on through the obstacles and don't complain. Try to keep little bit money from each salary, at least 200 rupees. I promise that if I will be a teacher of this method, I will do some affordable classes for people. But for now, u really need do not just focus on your problems but be a strong person and do/appreciate what u already have. Everyone working hard, including this westerners, they all have families and kids/jobs/responsibilities. I'm agree, that there is a different economical situation in India/West, but it is not a reason to judge. Take your dharma and try to be more easy and calm. Do yoga at home, not necessary Ashtanga. Read books, try to get some wisdom from holy land. I swear to God, u live in very wonderful country which can give so much of it. I'm doing my best and as u know now I'm in the same situation as u: without teacher, without chance to pay for classes and go to Mysore, but I really want and instead of judging I do something to change it and believe that one day i will come there. By the way, I can see that's you know a lot about what going on in Ashtanga community, so u should also know that recently Sharath did some non commercial meeting where Indian people of the middle class attended this yoga class. He is trying his best for his people. Smile:)
They have come for the certification I think for the ashtanga.we Indians have been very ignorant about yoga, really I myself have brushed it aside but once I saw my friend practice it on Facebook at that time I was suffering from knee pain and swelling its an old injury...I thought let me give this a try she conducts classes as well initially when I did the virbhadrasana or balancing poses I thought it was funny and also a little painful for me my knee used to hurt while doing the bow pose but slowly those pain and aches faded away I was surprised amd started taking yoga more seriously and to an extent started liking it then I moved on to doing sun salutations hatha yoga one and then I attempted the crow pose that also within 3 months of joining the classes bhujapidasana titibhasana etc now I smoothly do the headstand...without support now after 5 months of practice I love yoga not because of the poses but the peace of mind...I feel one with myself I calmer than before ashtanga is difficult I’m only able to do the half primary series because every time theres a viniyasa I get tired its intense but the mental peace I get cant be described in words...more people should start doing yoga...you’ll benefit. PS-I can do 70 sun salutations constantly now...targeting 108.
