Myrtle Beach Pavilion also had an indoor scrambler. Ran fast and was insanely loud. I do not know when it was installed but it was there in the late 80's for sure. I really wish there was a lot more of these. This was a video that brought back many many memories.

Old video, but; There’s an indoor teacups at Six Flags Great America (“Chubasco”). There are large open arches in three of the walls, so for most of season it feels only semi-enclosed. However, for Fright Fest, they board up the arches, turn off the lights, and pump in fog, lasers, strobes, and house music. It’s a real trip!

Casino Pier's original indoor scrambler was in a Blue and yellow dome & was called POLTERGEIST. Then they built a more permanent corrigated steel building and used the same machine and named it Centerfuge, with almost 30 years of coates of black paint. Eight years ago today we lost our ride to the Atlantic Ocean & the completely refurbished Centerfuge is what stands today and is now on the side of the pier without the ocean washing under the boards. I worked at Seabreeze in 2008, the first year without the beloved Gyrosphere. It was my favorite flat ride of all time and we all hated to see it go. From what I remember, age and capacity (I regularly had between a half hour-45 minute wait for the ride) were the biggest reasons Seabreeze got rid of it- I don't remember the other accidents being cited. Seabreeze replaced it with the Music Express from Wild West World in KS rather than getting a new scrambler or moving it outdoors.

Canobie and Great Escape's scramblers have similar lines and low capacities. Astrosphere at Funtown usually isn't more than a 10-20 min wait.

There is another indoor scrambler which I guess you didn’t know about. And it was actually on the west coast! It was located at Knott’s Berry Farm in their Boardwalk section, and called Whirlpool. It was themed to sea life, and one of the unique things is that this one had a window that you could look in while waiting in line. It was removed to build the Perilous Plunge water flume ride, and the scrambler was relocated outdoors elsewhere in the park. Interestingly, Perilous Plunge itself was later removed and the scrambler was returned near to where it once stood, although still outdoors unfortunately. But they gave it a new lighting package and it’s never looked better. But I miss Whirlpool. th-cam.com/video/1g5_eKEhlPU/w-d-xo.html

There was a similar style ride at Dorney park called Meteorite in the 80s and 90s. It had the music, light, fog, etc. except it wasn’t a scrambler ride. You got in a round cars that moved around the room autonomously from the other cars. and they spun quickly sort of like a more wild tea cups. In the late 90s they removed it for a pizza restaurant. Great video I love those rides too. I used to hang around Salisbury beach as a teenager the Space Odyssey started out as the Night Flight at Shaheen's Fun-O-Ramma Park in 1975 or 1976. It was located in the old skating rink building. The blizzard of 78 destroyed everything on the ocean side of the park. The Scrambler itself survived and was moved back to its original spot. Because the Night Flight was so popular they added the dome and a new light show. That's when it became Space Odyssey. It was called that because the only song it played was the theme to 2001 a space odyssey. When Shaheen's closed in the late 80's most of the rides moved across the street to Pirates Park which occupied the site of the defunct wooden Wildcat roller coaster.
Unlike the other rides from Shaheen's the Space Odyssey remained until Pirates Park closed in the 90's
Now Pirates Park is condo's like what happened to most of the Ocean front NE amusement parks.

My sister was a Scrambler fanatic going all the way back to childhood. But she grew up outside of the region with most of the indoor Scramblers. I don't know if she's actually ridden any of these!
Concerning safety, I wonder if the rash of accidents was a pure coincidence or if there was anything about putting a Scrambler indoors that made it more dangerous. Did these rides lack a "house lights on" period between cycles when operators could inspect restraints and see what was going on? Did the ambiance mean they were trusting riders to be self-policing?

    • @CanobieCoaster
      @CanobieCoaster  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I think the fact operators need to walk where the ride spins and the fact it was dark caused issues.

    • @donjackson5522

In the case of the Mind Scrambler, there were definitely house lights that were on in between rides. When I worked there, part of the fun was startling guests with when to turn them off. We had hand signals back then to ensure everyone was clear. Plus the ride was completely manual, lighting and the ride speed. You had to shift up slowly or the ride would stall. The attendant would have had plenty of time to jump up on a car and ride it to the edge with how slowly it started. I think they automated it after I worked there which made it start up faster.

It wasn’t much, just some flashing lights and music, but it was also one of the very few air conditioned places in the entire park! We made it a point to hit that ride in the afternoon when we needed a heat-break 🤣. So I can definitely confirm there have been indoor Scramblers outside the northeast of the US, lol 🤗. I believe Knott’s removed their indoor Scram around the time they built Camp Snoopy and moved most of the mild and kiddy rides from the back of the park to the new area in the front. Just to let you know Centrifuge at Casino Pier in Seaside Heights NJ was a sort of rebranding when they added the entrance tunnel and switched to more of a techno pop type of playlist. Originally the ride was called Poltergeist and played various types of metal. You forgot at least one. Busch Gardens Williamsburg, VA used to have its Scrambler located inside a dark and air-conditioned building. The section of the park is now Ireland, which used to be called Hastings or the village of Hastings. It is in the building that used to house the show Castle O'Sullivan. I don't remember if the show had lights, fog or music and I'm not sure what the name was. I think it was themed to a historic battle of Hastings. The park opened in 1975. Not sure when it started there and it was gone by the early 1980's from the research I found.

In the early 1980's Long Island's Adventureland placed its Trabant (Wipeout) ride within a dome and it had loud rock music to disco lights. They called it "The Black Hole". @@CanobieCoaster Oh it was awesome. I think they only had it for about four years before getting the Gravitron. There is a bit of a story behind me and the Black Hole. Growing up before my double digit ages, Adventureland had the Trabant and I was scared of that thing. My mom and sister went on it and both got sick! So I wouldn't touch that thing with a 40 foot pole. Ok, now fast forward to when first got The Black Hole. I was tipped off on it by my cousin. I must have been about 10-ish at the time. So he described it as I did, but he left out the details on the ride. He said, "It spins very slowly backward for a while and when the music gets going, it spins forward really fast and goes up and down and goes nuts!" So I am thinking, that they enclosed the Musik Express. BUT when I get there and go on the ride, I said to myself, "This looks awfully familiar." Okay, so the ride started to spin slowly backward, just like my cousin said, but when it started to move forward, it shifted from side to side and also started to rise up. It was then I realized I was on the Trabant. I was like, "Oh Sugar Honey Ice Tea...I'm going to die!" I had a death grip on handlebar.
Well, not only did I survive, but I didn't get sick and ended up liking the ride! However, it did pale in comparison to the Gravitron.

I really wish more parks would enclose their flat rides. Parks like Six Flags could do so much more with their scrambler & other flat rides.

I agree. It's a cheap way to plus a ride.

I've been on Psycho Drome a few times. It's insane, and I love it. Also went on Joker before it got moved outside. Haven't been up that way in a couple years, so I haven't been on Cyborg yet, but I'd love to.

I wish I could have ridden Joker when it was indoors.

I was so glad The great escape out thiers m
Back in the dome. Light show could be better but it’s still amazing and on a hot day a good way to cool down with the AC.

These indoor ones are fun. I’m so sorry for the families who lost loved ones 💔 there is a reason why though the pro attendants need to say, please keep feet and hands inside the ride at all cost and don’t mess with the restraints.

We did and I'm sure they still do. I could tell you some stories that would amaze you about how the public acts at these parks.

MY GOODNESS THE STROBE LIGHTS!!! I mean I’m fortunately not epileptic but it still hurt! I don’t know if I want to ride that with the intense light show they have inside.
Why not change the setting up for an indoor scrambler or change the strobe lights? Maybe one to be an international travel theme called Scrambled around the World or something like that?

Busch Gardens Williamsburg had an Irish themed one, but usually they're more about the lights and music than theme.

@@CanobieCoaster Interesting! However I feel the strobe lights might ruin these rides for me.

In Omaha, NE in the 80’s and 90’s the now defunct Peony Park operated the indoor scrambler The Black Hole.

There is one in Florida at a park called Swampy Jacks Wongo adventure the ride is called Swamp Ape. It is a tribute to Abominable Snowman indoor scrambler attraction at Miracle Strip Amusement Park.
