@Ira Denver I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff atm. Takes a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
I revisited Kenny a number of years ago as the last time I had been there was back in the mid 80s. Broke my heart that it changed so much I just couldn't find much joy in it. This video was a great reminder of what I miss.
These Kennywood specials are so cool, but I can't lie. I'd love a new show that picked up where the 1988 documentary left off. One that talks about the park from 1989-2019. So much has happened with the park since Kennywood Memories!
@@johnnyfedz1293 I agree. Kennywood is not the same at all. I tried 3 times this summer, and I know that with the pandemic that things have to be modified, but that "Kennywood Feeling" is long gone. Sad :-( All corporate BS. I wish they would watch these documentaries and restore that nostalgia. I have sent several messages.. No one cares anymore.
Thank you Brian and Gino for keeping Pittsburgh safe all those years ago and thank you to those who did, do and will keep us safe for a wonderfully enjoyable day.
I grew up in Indiana County and spent some time at Kennywood. I have a yearly tradition in that I watch 'Kennywood Memories' in April/May. After getting married, my husband & I now live in Baltimore, so we haven't made it to Kennywood in 24+ years, but I would love to go one more time. Thank you for giving us those great "Kennywood Memories"!!
Very fun to watch especially after 10+ years of living in New England. Those Pittsburgh accents! Guys shorts were really short back then LOL. Definitely need to make a new one. Lots have changed. Thanks for putting this together.
Many years ago when I visited the Museum of Television in NYC, I bought.a PBS tape called Great Old Amusement Parks. To this day, it is one of my prized possessions. Thank you so much for putting together this great compilation.
That was really good, thanks Rick. I've been going to Kennywood park for almost 45yrs and bring my daughter's with me now to share in the fun and make new memories
I loved Kennywood. We would visit grandparents in Turtle creek every summer and go to Kennywood. I wish there was film from the 60s. My grandmother said their school would go when she was a girl, and she was born in 1898. My parents went there with school also. Back in the 60s we would find a picnic spot and we were free to go ride. My sister and I ran from roller coaster to roller coaster.
Is switcheroo a Pittsburgh term? My dad used to use it all the time and ever since I moved from Pittsburgh, I have never heard it again until I watched this video.
@@deaddog5344 I will use the word in a phrase like my dad used to say when our multiple cars were in the driveway and he needed to plan for the next day and leave first. "Time for switcheroo" Or "its time to play switcheroo in the driveway" meaning we must rearrange the cars in the driveway in sequence order of who leaves first tomorrow. It was a serious LOL moment when I watched this because I have not heard the word for over 25 years. And yes my dad grew up in the 50's so what you said makes sense.
Got my family 2020 season passes! Me and my wife has went, and now I’m so excited to share the fun with my 11 and 13 year olds! Here’s to another great year at Kennywood!!
Thank you for the memories. I also haven't been there since the late 60's. You had stand next to the wooden Howdy Dottie to see if you were tall enough to get on that ride. I loved the Fun-House and the Penny Arcade, and of course the Racer, and those electric bumper cars. Controlled head-on crashes were a hoot, such fun. Great stuff Rick and WQED, keep it up...
Thank you so much for this - I've always loved Kennywood Memories as I was and always will be obsessed with rollercoasters and parks, and this video just brings back more of the feelings of how Kennywood was when I was a kid, even though I was born in '93. I no longer live in Pittsburgh so I don't get to KW more than once a year max so this footage is very special to me.
That was great! I really miss Kennywood I went A LOT when I was younger. When my parents moved us to Florida I was sad. The amusement parks in Orlando did not, in my opinion, compare to Kennywood Park!
I was born long after this was made but my family used to take me to Kennywood every year and I love looking at the history of the place and to see what it looked like before I was even born
I have Charles Jaques Jr.'s book "Kennywood: Roller Coaster Capital of the World. A great read. Is he still alive? I know he also did the PBS documentary Great Old Amusement Parks.
@OneDayAfterAnother I would think it would be about $3.50 with inflation. The funny part is the drink came with a big fancy plastic straw. That straw alone would cost $1.00 today. Plus those drinks were made with thick plastic. The container alone would cost $1.00 to make. Today its thin and recycled plastic.
I smiled watching this entire production Rick. I loved the 80s btw they dont make ANY hairspray like we had back then. Lol Did you notice the blonde on the Racers pulling into the station after the ride with the super high hair? Notice how it stayed big and high! #memories #nostalgia.
I miss how Kennywood once was. The atmosphere had the old-fashioned vibe, and people were happier and friendlier as well. I miss The Rotor ride. I remember being totally embarrassed as a kid when my sandal got lost when the floor dropped. They had to do a dry ride, run the machine, drop the floor, and retrieve my shoe 😆
Rick's Great Old Amusement Parks documentary from 1998 was a big part of my childhood and making me a roller coaster enthusiast and eventually learn to appreciate other aspects too (me seeing rides like those featured in the documentary when I went to Knobles this summer was a big part of me learning to appreciate flat rides and dark rides to be as much of an element of parks). Cool to see bonus footage older than that documentary of one of the parks. I will be riding Lazer Loop next summer when it opens at Niagara Fun Park in Grand Island, NY next year (that's right, it's comming back north after 26 years of operation in Mexico). It's not all fun and games though, seeing the 4 removed flat rides after the 2020 season made me quite mad, Kangaroo especially.
