  • Lightweight EMTBs have fast become the "do it all" MTB, but with a reduced amount of power and torque, are they really worth it for heavier riders? In the name of science and a bit of fun, we recruited Georgia Leslie to find out how much harder it is to ride when you've got an extra 35kg strapped on to you! This could be interesting!

    I'm a 133 KG rider and I highly recommend the "Low" power e-Bikes. Levo SL, Orbea Rise etc. I started with the Levo, and it is great, but really, too much power. Routinely spun the rear and it was heavy on technical sections. The "low" power bikes provide the need assistance for long or hard climbs, so as to not tire your legs out, so you are nice and fresh for the downhills. Most of the trails where I ride are "Trail" level, some light Enduro, and once in a while a DH run. If you are running mostly DH, then yeah, go full power because they descend like a Cadillac.

    Great comparison. I'm a light 59kg rider and that helps explain why my experience and range on my Trek Fuel EXE is comparable to other heavier riders on full fat. I never feel the need to go more than eco mode and get crazy range on my EXE. I never realized how big a difference rider weight would make.

I usually ride the SL when I ride with my friends on regular bikes but it just wasn’t enough as more people started riding e-bikes. I guess I can be consider a light rider, I weigh about 160 lbs, height is about 5feet and 8 inches. Well, my regular bike is the 2020 Enduro, and I generally do 2000 feet, up 4k feet of vertical gain - both rides have plenty of DH rides to justify the vertical gain.
    I recently bought a Decoy Core 4, about 6 weeks ago, YT had an Insane sale, too hard to pass up. Well, the Decoy was a game changer. Now I can do the exact same rides, effortlessly and still have energy to hit the gym for a light strength conditioning.
    I ride the bike exclusively at ECCO mode only, 42nm, and drop the effort by one notch. I personally don't need a full power bike, hence why i ride in ECCO with slightly decreased assist.

    Rotwild RE/RX 375 is s somewhat lighter bike under 20kg, but with the full 85Nm Power shimano and a 375Wh battery that weighs only 1.9kg(compared to Bosch powertube 750 at 4.3kg)
    I sell and test both types. Removing so much weight from the downtube and and getting it lower down makes a massive difference. The smaller battery also clicks in and out with a push button, so changing to another takes seconds.

    The corollary of this is how silly hill climb stages are on EWS-E (EDR-E?). The bike's power is limited and the dominant force. Therefore a heavier rider will have an artificially much lower power to weight ratio than a lighter rider than they would on an analogue. Those hill stages make me uninterested in the whole race as a spectator, as it's often the stage which decides the winners and makes no sense.

      Also owning a full-fat, but the levo/kenevo sl is the weakest of all light e-mtbs with just 35nm of torque, others with around 60nm are significantly more powerful, which will be enough for most climbs, there are just a few situations where you need 80-90nm to conquer a climb. As they say in the video, it always depends on the group you are riding in, if they are all on full-fat, you should also go for one, so that they don't need to wait for you all the time or because your battery might not last that long and you are not able to finish the ride, otherwise a lighter one is a good compromise of keeping it sporty and still supportive enough

    • @JasonFoxLCB

      @@e_mtb Yeah, I keep waffling on which direction to go. Part of me just thinks if I'm going to spend that kind of money, I should go for the power. If I was 30, that might be different story. But at 50 and with what scientists call "chicken legs," more power seems to be the way for me.

    • @e_mtb

      @@JasonFoxLCB Yes, in this case, I also think so, light e-mtbs are having an advantage when riding very challenging trails, because they are more nimble in the corners or when doing jumps (e.g. in a bike park), but if you are more interested in doing longer tours and exploring the nature, a full fat emtb is still the ideal tool to do so and the additional weight will not bother you in any way in this case

    with 95 kg i´m a heavy bloke which i can compensate for a while by the watts i can press into the pedal. I have ridden a EMTB-Conversion (Bafang BBS) for some 1000 kms, stripped down to ca. 350 Watt max output. YES! This limits what i can do, there is not only one uphill- trail i cannot master with low power. No problem as long as im alone, but in a group its no fun to see the others handling climbs i cant do. Also it ist a problem to do a long ride with a small battery. So i "unleashed" my motor (and bought a new bike later) and it was more fun. I like the less kilos on the low-power-EMTBs, but climb-quality is more important to me.

    What a great sport she was for doing that. I hope she can do more on the channel again soon.
    That was pretty interesting. I'm interested in getting an EMTB once I can afford something I like. I'm pretty unfit and although I ride occasionally on my 905 I suffer a lot with some old injuries mostly knee issues and my fitness has gone badly downhill. I was thinking of getting something like a Rise but I think this has shown me I maybe need to go full power and ride on lower power settings as/if I get fitter. My other concern is I usually tend to land between sizes a S and M frame, should I go larger or smaller in this case on an EMTB. I've noticed some small frames can't take the bigger batteries on offer with some brands but this isn't an issue over ride quality.

All of my friends are on full power ebikes and I am trying to figure out if I would have fun on a lightweight ebike and if I would be able to keep up with my friends.

      I’m going for both, being a heavier guy. ROTWILD R.E 3750 core. 360Wh battery, full 85Nm motor and just under 20kg. But the weight difference from this to a 750Wh is Night and day. The battery is 2.4kg lighter than Bosch powertube 750, and much lower down.

      My 1st emtb was a full fat Haibike but recently picked up an Orbea Rise and I love it! I wasn't riding in turbo on the Haibike so decided I didn't need it. The rise is so playful and natural with plenty of power to get me where I need to be.

    Great fun video. ...but....Ignoring the lack of Science here (muscle to weight ratio and all that) - what is interesting is the idea that any difference in a rider's ability should (and could) be addressed with an increase in power assistance. Do we really all need to get to the top of the hill at the same time? Does the rider at the back just buy more power to catch up? Yes I can see the argument for an increase in assistance for some, but is the conclusion here that everyone should be considering their power assistance relative to everyone else they are riding with...? Still a fun video though 🤘

      Hey, Tim! Thanks for watching! We're stoked that you enjoyed it. Although this was a fun experiment we think what you've mentioned is well worth a thought. You'll always find that in a group ride, you'll have people at the front and people at the back. However, with differing power modes and motor specs, you could have a wide range of riders (in terms of weight & fitness) riding together in a close group. Maybe this could be its own video?! 👍

      @tim__sadler ปีที่แล้ว

      @@embn I guess I have just spent many years coming to terms with being slow on climbs compared to some of the people I ride with... the implication in this video is that you could iron out this difference with me being on a full fat EMTB and my co-riders being on half fat EMTB - it reminds me of Super Mario Kart where you can always catch up after a crash... yeah this is just a bit of fun and I am overthinking it, but it seems to be an active discussion point with lower power emtb's i.e. 'you can't keep up with the full fat models'. IMHO this is going to kill the category in the long term...if price is not a differentiator, then surely the market will just follow power? (and the weight will ultimately come down...) - way too much overthinking - I'm heading back to GMBNtech....

    I ride amish roadbikes a lot, im an average to fair climber depending on the day. I weigh 168 lbs.
    These girls/women we ride with, one is under 100LBS. Several are 110 at most. And they are fit.
    They will come zooming by me up hills like they are out for a dawdle. While Im about to launch breakfast and am cranking up a storm.
    70lbs is a lot.
    I do smoke them on downhills, Im a bit of a wacko on downhills anyway.

    ok here is my dilemma, i'm 187cm 93kg (without gear) and after 24km of mountain biking (the trails are at the top of the mountain) my knee is killing me, so I want to keep going up the mountain and my options are three, 1. buy surron, but not really since the battery will die before I even get to the top, 2. Buy a 125cc MX 3. buy an ebike , will the assist help me enjoy my ride? worst case do the same distance with no pain or best case let me ride for longer. My knee doesn't hurt all the time, only when I push it a bit like the 3rd easiest gear and usually while I return home when I'm tired.

    Power to person proposition - selecting an e-bike
    First off I am no kinematic technical person or have any formal education in this field so take the following with a grain or two of salt . . .
    In this video you discuss the idea of big guys and light e-mtb bikes. It got to me thinking that a big guy kilowatt output is greater on a non-emtb vs a smaller person - power to weight ratio. The premise suggests that a light emtb with less watt output may not have the same benefit or negated benefit of lighter less wattage emtb.
    I wanted to proposed a perhaps more scientific exercise to look into.
    Kilowatt output from a big guy on a regular mtb - trial/all mountain/enduro - BGKO Big Guy Kilowatt Output
    E-mtb to watt output to weight ratio (WOW) - question? Does the weight of the e-mtb offset the benefit of kilowatts assist with pedaling?
    Do trial runs with same person - non emtb light emtb and full emtb
    While using the base time of the non emtb climb - establish which setting (watt assist) is required to meet the same non emtb climbing time on the light and full emtb.
    Big Guy Weight /Height x BGKO + Base climb time (non emtb) x WOW (light & full emtb) = Power to weight ratio
    This should demonstrate whether a lighter emtb provide value to a bigger rider on a light emtb bike or if it is the same as a full emtb.
    My underlying supposition could be that because of bigger guys riding a (heavier emtb vs non emtb) needs more watt assist than a lighter rider on the same bike, that a bigger rider may not want a lighter etmb because their weight by itself negates the lighter motor output this reducing the efficiency/benefit of a bigger rider.
    BTW I’m 6’6” 225 pds (age 54) and this would be super facisting to have someone with more knowledge than me to try to solve for this equation and I think your viewers would appreciate the analysis as it would help steer people in making a better buying decision for there body wot weight ratio
    Cheers

    Hey Georgia, in looking at your pedal stroke on the steep, it looks like the majority of your force is on the downstroke, if you put more power to pulling back & up on your pedal stroke you will vector the weight of your body over the tread and with a forward lean, might help keep your front end down… or not, but it might!

    An unfair test young man, your extra weight is working weight and not dead weight which is what it was on that nice young lady. A fairer test would be for the weight to be attached to the bike. For your info I’m one of those 6’2” 100kg riders but my downfall is I’m 75.😂😂😂

    • @embn
      @embn  ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha! It wasn't the most scientific of tests, but it was a fun way of showing how much riding weight can affect you. 😂

  • @marksedman2267
    @marksedman2267 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This test is kinda silly, you cannot strap weight to a person in one spot and expect it to be even close to the same thing. I am 215 my muscles are developed to support my weight and the weight is distributed. You could be a heavy rider and have a ton of muscle mass.
    I know its for fun but if you are considering a bike purchase then I would suggest you don't use this for your decision making process.

    At 95kgs you need 147nm to feel what a 55kg person feels with an 85nm bike....so yes, one day you will feel what it's like. Eventually ebikes will be so powerful you barely have to put any effort in to pedal at the limiter speed up very very steep hills. I can't wait for that day as I basically want a 20kg motorbike to ride around as fast as I can....fitness? I get that from running marathons. Bring on the 150nm bikes asap! (I weigh 70kgs. lol)

    Funny, but a light body person's muscles match a light person, a heavy body person's muscles match a heavy person. Putting weights on a light person is not the same as putting a heavy body person on their own muscles.

    A real world test with a Trek small battery low power bike was conducted by a fellow rider.
    Hes too heavy, hes out of shape. So he bought that really cute Trek.
    And has run flat dead out of battery 3 times out of 4 rides with our Wed group. 15 miles is too far.
    So has given that expensive ass bike to his wife, who doesnt even ride. And bought himself another expensive bike with a real motor and battery.
