I think Danny would puff his chest in pride a little after hearing you mention him upon seeing Neil play for the first time. A great compliment, well deserved.. even if you didnt realize when you said it. Which makes it special. 🤘🧙♂️🤘
Rush were my favourite band in the world and Neil peart was the reason i picked up my first drum sticks...For 30 years i attended concerts and bought their albums. There are so many great Rush songs that I'm sure you will love, YYZ live from Brazil is an amazing instrumental rocker that NEEDS to be seen. Neil Peart (Peert) is one of Danny Carey's major influences, this is a group that is well worth a listen/watch. Enjoying your reactions, well spoken and you have a great grip on the musicianship of these bands. Also me being a huge Tool fan it is fun to watch someone listening to them for the first time! Living vicariously through you, spiral out!!! Thanks for doing a great job!!!
You crack me up! Very good reaction. This happens to be ONE of my favorite Rush songs, specifically for the lyrics. These guys are pretty good for letting you zone out, in a good way, LOL!
It's not a coincidence that you focused on the great Neil Peart on the percussions. He is widely considered to be one of the top drummers of the past 50 years! He also wrote the lyrics for the overwhelming majority of RUSH's songs, including "The Trees." ☮

This is 1978 and it's a metaphor. The trees were all kept equal by hatchet.axe and saw. As that's what an equal society would be. But we are a diverse race us humans, we have free will to do as you please but some expect to be taken care of by the state. As in the song the Oaks were cut down so the maples would be equal. The Maples didn't realize the Oaks gave them life. There are certain tiers to society and free markets. Some are the providers of jobs some are the workers. Then there are the ones who take advantage of the other two by living off their hard work.

Neal Peart, aka The Professor, was one of the best percussionists ever. They say that drummers play to metronomes and metronomes play to Neal Peart. His kit was huge, and one might think that it would overwhelm a drummer and create a crazy mix of sounds of he uses all those tools with such precision and virtuosity that, as you noted, he becomes as much a part of the song's melody as Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson, who are arguably also top tier with their instruments. It's amazing that a 3-piece band can put out such a full and complex soundstage while remaining so tight amid time changes, key changes, melody changes, tempo changes, breaks, etc. Mind boggling.
This is the first song I ever heard from Rush. It turned me onto Rush in h.s. We analyzed the lyrics in creative writing class Powerful message of the haves keeping the have nots down. Neil Peart is the true 🥁 GOAT and one of best songwriters ever.
@@rick5440 that’s a legit way to look at it. But it doesn’t have to be about feelings. Like the maples could be people in wheelchairs asking for equal access to buildings and stuff and the oaks deny ramps being built.
Trees, albeit a great song, is an odd introduction to Rush. I would have started with Tom Sawyer, the quintessential prog rock anthem, easily one of the best prog rock songs ever made. That song also demonstrates the ease the band has in flowing from one time signature to the next. Spirit of Radio would by my 2nd song to dive into. And then you can go on from there! It is about racism ...white priveledge vs. minorities ... " they wonder why the maples can't be happy in their shade ..." Listen to it a few times . We are all equal by the hatchet , axe & saw
Yeah, no. If anything, it's about socio/economic class - not about race or racial divide which seems to be a goal amongst certain people nowadays. To each their own on how they interpret it. And, don't call me racist; I'm not white and my origin is a country/region where many people to this day have no electricity or running water. Back in the day we called it 4th world - but now people are offended by that term. I don't want to make anyone have a hissy fit; especially those who act like defenders of races and cultures that they have no relation to (the saviours that no one asked for). I hope you do more Rush - they are the greatest!
These lyrics are high poetry. Yet the meaning is actually quite simple to me anyway & agree as mentioned that it's all up to one owns interpretation, it's all good, you do you! We are not all equal in every way. Any attempt to artificially create universal equality is ultimately doomed to failure. But no matter how equitable life becomes, death awaits us all.
