Fairly fast at 200, but on the Cheyenne we were flying at 250 daily, 270 in a slight dive. Took them 40 years to get close to what we were doing in the AH-56A. I was a test pilot on the Cheyenne program, flew ship 1007.
@@berchmanrichard6070 ; Wow, given what the Army currently is looking for in recon and attack helicopters she really sounded way ahead of the time. Such a sad thing that she was never adopted because of politics. Thanks for the comment.
Oi, it's the UK police - you're under arrest for violation of the Opinions Act 2018 - please display your license, social security number & your bare arse so we can spank it.
Anyone else notice how loud and distinct the sound was in the high speed propulser mode? Then they specifically showed and captioned a "low noise" high speed helicopter mode. It sure won't be stealthy at the advertised top speed over the battlefield. FYI: Not throwing shade or being critical - just observing performance characteristics. Every machine involves engineering compromises. It seems acoustic stealth v. speed is one in this platform.
You can't go by the audio as an indication of the true noise profile. It should be quieter in forward flight because the main rotor is slowed down with more power going to the propulsor. A slower main rotor results in lower blade tip Mach numbers and lower noise. Also, the blade vortex interaction (BVI) will change which is a big source of noise. The Raider can do level flight acceleration and deceleration. No nosing over to accelerate and no flairing and exposing the belly to decelerate.
Pretty soon they’ll become industry standard for not just military purposes but Public domain like Rescue Emergency Forces, Transportations And Other Filmmaking Techniques etc.
@Darth Wiffy Thing is that it will be heavily tested before it starts deployment, and at first it will likely be a helo used by special forces and once it has proven itself it will go into use by regular forces
I think this is the best helicopter design in many many years, so many ways to use an asset like that... SAR, cover ops, support, endless possibilities
Thank you for your input. I’m an a rotary wing aviator, test pilot, and instructor. I do realize that all helicopters can. What I was alluding to is the fact that tilt rotors cannot autorotate (at least as currently designed) nor can they glide reasonably well. What I’m saying in short this is a better and safer design for faster and longer range vertical lift.
@@jonathanwelter agree the auto is a key survivability factor.... But while the V22 can't auto, the AW609 has shown that it can, albeit it takes some time and altitude to convert to full auto.
mig1nc I mean one of them won’t make it. Not definitively V280. V280 has advantage in range and speed, S-97 has maneuverability, acceleration and possibly less noise.
I love the potential for this aircraft! I can't wait to see the larger H-60 replacement sized version. It should be a game changer for everything from the battlefield to coastal search and rescue operations!
Yes agree with others this is a flash back to the Lockheed Cheyenne AH-56 program of 1967. “Cheyenne using a four-blade rigid-rotor system and configured the aircraft as a compound helicopter with low-mounted wings and a tail-mounted thrusting propeller driven by a General Electric T64 turboshaft engine. The Cheyenne was to have a high-speed dash capability to provide armed escort for the Army's transport helicopters, such as the Bell UH-1 Iroquois”.
Except: Cheyenne would've still suffered the same fate of all conventional single rotor helicopters, blade stall on receding blade. It never would even approach the performance of the Raider. Why isn't there a civilian version being co-developed to hit market, I'm sure there are plenty of billionaires that would love to double range/speed of their respective helicopters or even time share fleets that offer helicopter service to the wealthy. Also what about medivac services in the USA, that would be an immediate life saving tool.
I remember when Sikorsky was having an event at Trump National Doral, which is where I first saw this helicopter. It was amazing to see. Unfortunately the model was not a ready to fly model. So great to see it in action. Awesome job Sikorsky. I hope the military uses this since they killed the Comanche.
The Cheyenne was so cool looking because it was really odd and complicated looking and had different things going on from different angles. It was really INTERESTING and sorta alien-tech+mad max badass looking. I really love the Cheyenne, and wish they had gone into service so there could be some around now. But this Raider looks more like an aircraft that would actually make it through development hell and get produced, today. Just visually, completely aside from its actual function, it looks like a real believable modern US military aircraft.
Cool video. I dying to see the S B 1 defiant. Hurry up guys it's been more than 12 months since it was supposed to make it maiden flight right? Go go go!!!
Never considered the flexibility is using the rear prop to offset pitch angle in a hover, both nose high and low. That is very cool. Also immediate deceleration is very unique as a conventional helicopter can only offset so much forward speed before vertical lift is impacted or AoA becomes too great (just a slow process in general, in comparison)
One of their demo videos show taking off then shooting up wards and backwards while keep the nose pointed at where you just left, allows for massive gun / missile barrage if they're front / wing mounted weapons. Wouldn't doubt if it goes backwards nearly as fast as it goes forward. Allows for a crazy change in tactics.
I'm not an expert, but judging from the exterior, it is basically a coaxial rotor, which will JUST work fine like many other helicopters, plus a rear propeller. That propeller at the end should provide much improvement to its acceleration and top speed. Imagine those WWII aircraft but combine those with helicopters
Rigid coaxial rotor system, when in forward speed mode, the retreating blade stall is countered by the flying blade above or below depending on which side. When it's going that fast, each rotor is only producing a significant portion of that side's lift. So both rotors flying and stalling on opposite sides cancel each other out.....and she flys on. I'd be surprised if the pilot notices a difference (outside of aileron-like fast cyclic movements). Talk about a true rotary wing then!
My question with regard to retreating blade stall is how have they managed to keep the blade flex minimal? At that speed significant translational lift would coned the blades up on the advancing side, causing catastrophic intersection. Those blades must be super rigid.
The blade is still moving faster than the aircraft in many respects (the inside of the blade stalls linearly with speed towards the outer edge, creating a lift dead zone that grows with speed). Retreating blade stall doesn't mean the blade entirely stalls, it just stalls too much starting at the root to maintain level flight due to asymmetric lift. The rotors are RIGID ---- just as the term rigid means very stiff. Virtually no flex (still flex, but tiny). Pay attention to the rotor when stopped --- There's no droop. Since both blades stall (create significantly less lift, not go backwards) at the same time, opposite of each other, the opposing asymmetry's cancel each other out. Basically the faster it goes, the more lift gets generated on one half of the rotor. This is why it HAS to be RIGID -- and it is. v=mLKyuwLZnbE
So dual main roter... Removes need for rear stabilization... Can the rear push prop be turned off? Say the raider needs to land in heavy grass... That rear prop is real close to the ground. Very cool design.
Yes, prop is variable pitch (like C130J prop) and can be shut off via clutch. If they did a big version, they could go twin counter rotating for beast mode (think TU95 prop)
is it possible for this vehicle to have a sort of STOL capability for higher takeoff payloads? it could take off similar to how a autogyro would. on return it could land vertically since the weight would be reduced from fuel consumption.
Induct the rear blade to reduce radar cross-section and to have front cowling flex to computer adjust the airflow threw the rear blade without increasing weight but to increase speed even more. other than that, I, ll take two.
Am thinking putting a double pusher prop like a twin engine won't it get the Raider easily to 250knots because 202knots is far less to it's competitor of 280knots??
They should have designed an articulating ducted rear fan for sound insulation and efficiency. That giant tail boom looks like it could hook into low vegetation or wires. Also constantly fighting stability in high crosswind pushing against that large tail airfoil could also be a issue as well.
Totally unnecessary, with the counter rotating rigid rotors, no "ducted" or other type of tail fan is needed, as there is no torque to counteract. The rear prop provides thrust along with the twin rotors.
@@pepecohetes492 The ducted fan would not be for counter rotation but for propulsion and directional attitude... I think you are thinking of the notar design... This is not what I'm talking about.
It's a speed booster and not a traditional tail rotor. The tail rotor function is in the secondary main rotor that is spinning in the opposite direction of the primary rotor.
We desperately need to upgrade the military helicopter technology. This seems like a good start but considering the vulnerability of aircraft like these and how they are very often full of soldiers its something that needs to be a priority. Considering we still use the Chinook, something that was aging even when I was a little kid in the 80’s, we must upgrade dramatically. Canceling the order of a single submarine for example would really help this effort. May be a bad example I don’t know, but still.
Ruben lol A-team?? Sorry buddy but it's you who knows fuck about what you're talking about. You think that was a joke? Dude you're a dumb fuck, can't even get your answer right.

Again, it needs no ducted fan due to the counter rotating main rotors, there is no torque to cancel. The rear prop provides extra thrust in level flight.

the rear propeller is mainly for speed, the ones on top spin in opposite directions making it more stable than normal helicopters
