I just love your short, to the point videos. I am forced to skip over so many wonderful content creators because their videos are just too long. With you I can get so much knowledge and watch multiple videos while I wait for my kids in the car loop. Thank you Sir! We truly appreciate you!❤
I made this trellis over the weekend using jute instead of crochet thread. As soon as the rain stops, I’m going to place it in the garden. Thanks for such a cool and helpful video!
Thanks for taking the time to build and tell Jag. I built my own trellis this weekend following your specs. I made some adjustments; I used 5 boards instead of 4 since my bed is wider, and used "L" brackets to brace the cross-bars and give the trellis more strength. It came out great, I wish I could upload some pics.
Brilliant logic and simplicity. A one-person job. Cotton string cheap and fast autumn cleanup. You sir, have the hands of a doctor, a carpenter, and green thumbs😁
This is a great idea. I've just moved and looking at trellising ideas. Even if you have to replace the cotton string every year, it looks simple and easy.
I have been racking my brain every year to build an affordable trellis for my cucumbers and pumpkins and never accomplished it...thank you for this wonderful idea. I will improve it for heavier weight.
Really, really useful video. The trellis is attractive and using cotton thread makes sense when it comes to composting. The redwood stakes another sensible suggestion. Thank you for showing me how.
First of all, great job. I am going to do this for my sweet potatoes. A couple of suggestions. Wood is weakest in longitudinal shear so putting fasteners into the end grain is not recommended. I would recommend triangular plywood corners at the top. You can fasten the two pieces together and get sway bracing at the same time. With a jig saw or router, you could even cut an arch shaped piece for the corner. That would look nice. Takes a little more time. Also, at 2:20, you are putting a screw into the end grain of that horizontal piece. Instead, bring that horizontal piece over on the side of the upright and put the screw into side grain of the upright. That will hold much better. Thank you for listening.
Yes, end grain is notoriously weak for holding screws. You can also do this: drill holes for dowels perpendicularly to where the screws will go into the end grain, glue in the dowels and then drill pilot holes to insert the screws. This will give the proper wood grain direction for the screws to bite into, without having to overlap the wood pieces and then add triangular corners as well..
I just found this video on the trellis and it's perfect it's simple it's easy for me to do and I really appreciated his simple instructions very easy to follow.
Easy to build, and inexpensive! Thank you. I was watching videos using cattle panels which are very expensive and hard to find in the city. This trellis means anyone can get the materials. :). Blessings.
I like watching your videos. Thanks for the tips. I also made a sm green house without any help from my husband. I used 2 iron trellis , 3 plant stakes, plastic paper 6ml, n wire.
After watching your video, I decided to follow your directions and make one for myself. It turned out great! I used vegetable trellis netting, because I already had some. The only thing I would recommend is to use a heavy duty staple gun to staple and secure the braces in the corners. Then, if you are building this by yourself, it makes drilling the pilot holes & inserting the screws easier. I also used a staple gun to secure the netting around the frames. Took a lot less time. Thanks for the design!
Love, this video! I've been web-shopping for a couple of trellises. All the large size, pretty ones and sturdy are over $60 and some priced 100 or more. I just googled DIY trellis and got the best info. So easy to make, at a very low cost, and environmentally conscious?! It spoke my language!! Thank you! My partner will be making a couple of this!!
I am going to make this for my garden. IF it works out well, I will probably make a lot more for my vine veggies. TY so much for this very simple method.
Love the cotton string idea! Thank you! At my new little house which is in the middle of town in a small town in Montana I plan to remove the lawn and put in raised beds to grow vegetables herbs and flowers. Grass is so useless and overrated!
Aesthetically pleasing & functional, well thought out & thoroughly explained. This video was a home run on every level & you kept it short & sweet. SUBSCRIBED. thank you!
I had an idea in my mind of how to use string to make my own trellis! This took it to a whole new level! Thank you for posting this! Soo helpful! God bless!
Thank you for your easy to make and economical way of trellis design. Im also a garden lover whenever Im off from work, surely i will incorporate ur design in my backyard and front home gardens.
Built one today. It looked like it was a 30m task. But it took me a good 75m (alone) to build one. It looks beautiful. About $12 in total but that worth it. Excited to grow some sugar snap peas that my daughter loves to pick and eat. Ty for this video. The other economical option is to consider cattle fence. Will work for squash and cucumbers as well.
I agree with the person before me this is a great video yet you gave me a great idea💡 to make large homemade bird cage I can walk in sit in a chair and enjoy my babies for my little birds in my home thank you very much for this video have a great day enjoy life I will take care y'all👵
I really like the way the trellis looks,I also like that its inexpensive to make for us that are on a budget 😄 👌 awesome project. Thank you for sharing🤗
WOW I searched so Many videos here for such a PLAIN and SIMPLE DIY WOODEN TRELLIS ❗🤪 HOWEVER NOTHING OTHER THAN A BUNCH OF RAMBLING ON AND ON WITH YOU NEED THIS AND THAT SCENARIOS UGHHH ❗😧 HOW THEY WERE NOT COST NOR TIME EFFECTIVE LIKE YOURS IS ❗ YOU AND I THINK ON THE SAME LEVEL❗😉 AS THE WORDS GO " GREAT MINDS THINK ALIKE "❗🤣😂🤣 Thank You Jack for a SIMPLE, QUICK AND INTELLIGENT VIDEO ❗🙄
I like many of your ideas, budget friendly, logically thought out, and most are simple and easy. Your production on your videos is also great, you are doing well!
Hi Jag.................That's awesome idea and affordable. Thank you for the video. I love all your videos because they always keep the costs down. Keep up the good work. Cheers
I had seen your video before and search for it again because I needed measurements but I am going to be making a 30 foot trellis and it needs to be 7-8’ feet high so that people can walk underneath it while everything grows around them… I will just have to adjust the amount of woould I use.. thank you
perfect find of information for me right now -- I want to both expand my garden but drive down overall costs. This also meets aesthetics for a front and side yard. Very appreciative of you sharing this knowledge.
Jag thank you ever so much for your attention to detail in your design and for sharing it and demonstrating how awesome it works. I especially appreciate the part where you explain why it is important to use the cotton thread I have thought of many different types of materials to use this is especially helpful I am an organic Gardener and look for every chance possible to repurpose things and recycle things in an earth safe and regenerative way. Thank you so much for explaining and showing I really appreciate this video so very much!
I think you'll need something heavier duty for melons. It might work if you doubles or tripled the string and twisted it- or just got heavier twine. I love these trellises, but string and twine tend to stretch and sag with just beans on them, so you'll want to find something that can handle the weight.
Dear Jag: I love all of your videos. I wish was in CA instead of VA due to crop friendly weather of CA. I have 100 acres of conservancy land in northern Virginia, a suburb of Washington DC which I am not using for farming. This was a simple and great trellis project. The only thing I would have done differently was to use treated wood instead of regular 1x4. I normally only use cedar wood for raised bed instead of treated wood as there is a potential of leaching chemicals from treated wood to go into vegetable garden. Thanks for sharing garden video.
It´s really nice project and looks good too. How ever, this design have one fundamental practical flaw. If the thread breaks from any point, the whole section looses tension.
Nice job Jag, I did the same the other year, but you will need a horizontal support from the top of the trellis to the fence, it will parallelogram otherwise due to the weight of the foliage and weight of the beans. Lovely job, just a tip.
!!!! I made something just like this(a scrog), but using pvc pipe. I pre drilled my grid, installed screws, then wove in the grid. Very easy to work with. *thinks to self* :)

Thank you very much for putting your experiments into videos. They are and inspiring and practical tool for some of us who can do the projects but just need someone to show us a great way of doing them!
OMGoooooosh!! That's THE solution for my balcony that I was looking for 🤦 I'll use two sticks for each side of our balcony for my tomatoes and peas simply to create narrow supportive walls, no space for the whole construction 😍 thank you so much!!!!!!! BTW I think that my husband will divorce me after this, anyone has a spare bed at home? He is already complaining every year that I'm a bee-magnet 😂😂

I'm a carpenter so I enjoy seeing peoples DIY builds. This one is efficient!
Glad you like it! Most of my woodworking projects are not at a professional level, so a comment from a carpenter means a lot! Thanks!

If you made some "adjustments", you didn't follow his specs.
Great tip about using string that can be composted.
Very smart. I like how you construct so that any adjustments or repairs can be made and the frame stays intact. Really great video
Where were you when I needed you 5 years ago!! Now that I’ve found you I’m making this!

get the cattle panels from tractor supply.

That’s fantastic you think holistically including foresight about composting the thread! It’s the smartest and best way! Love it!
Simple but attractive trellising. Thanks for your video, it was really easy to follow along.
