Everything sucks. Music sucks. Scenes are teh ghey. Its all boring and full of hipsters trying to make everything sound super important, deep and intellectual.
People would rather complain about "misogynistic" lyrics in brutal death metal, than the dozens upon dozens of mainstream artists across multiple genres who have actually hurt/abused women and underage kids Priorities
@The Darkcel Podcast every scene probably has at least one sick fuck who wants to use music, money and power to hurt and abuse people. Hell, a local heavy trapper from my scene got busted trying to hit up high-school chicks. The solution is holding these fuckers accountable when they get caught and keeping our circles clean

It's honestly just fucking juvenile and boring. Like seriously-who. the fuck. are you? Why should literally anyone give a fuck about your opinion? Let people enjoy the music they fucking like. The dude changes narratives when convenient and gatekeeps when convenient. He gets justifiably criticized for that. Also his source of information on black metal is the highly discredited Lords of Chaos. Just all around bad.
the biggest problem I have with him is that the dude thinks, THINKS, he knows everything. The dude speaks as if his word is law on everything he talks about. Dude has admitted to not being an expert on certain genres. but the problem is he just needs everyone to think he knows everything. dude is fucking annoying when he speaks like that.

@Lord Amraphel I think in the case of most content creators the goal out weights the effort put in the videos. If they put as much effort on research and presentation as they do their advertising, thumbnails, and titles we'd have a lot less disappointments or spotty repetitive content.

@@ThePunkRockMBA Well the fact that you get information wrong? lol That would be the first thing. I realize your not as well versed in metal as others but C'mon some of the stuff you get wrong is novice level, A simple google search to check your work before you publish would be good. I know very little about Metalcore but if i was to make a video about it i'd check to make sure my sources are correct and that i'm not just going off one article, book or blog source. If you think i'm being too much of a stickler, so be it. But i did like your content before you started passing off wrong information as accurate.
Thank you for this well constructed response. I too was scratching my head at his strange "double standard" critiques. I'm glad that you approached this subject by backing your statements with evidence. It needed to happen. Well done sir!
If his feelings get hurt this easy maybe slam just ain’t for him. Also complete hypocrisy, he doesn’t like “misogyny” but is totally cool with all the other stuff, total virtue signaling.
Don't get me wrong, I think the guy's a twat for many reasons but I wouldn't say that it's necessarily virtue signaling. I despise feminists and SJWs but I don't like music that objectifies or degrades women or songs that glorify drugs either, however I've got no problem listening to music about murder, satanism, or any of that other shit. The reason for that is simple, when metal bands talk about killing people or worshiping satan it's obvious they're bullshitting. It's supposed to be shocking and scary. When bands talk shit about women or glorify drugs, it's 50 -50. Some are doing it because they're trying to shock people, others totally believe the things they're saying. If I know they're bullshitting it doesn't bother me, if I don't know or if I know for a fact they're serious, I won't listen to it. For example, I'll listen to Cannibal Corpse's many rape related songs, but I won't go near 99.9% of rap music, simply because I know that George Fisher is bullshitting and most rappers actually see women as objects.
He has also been very misogynistic in the videos where he talks about women in the different scenes he claims to love. In his latest video he said: I wanted to invite a girl to talk about the female experience in rock but as I don't want to make this "more controversial" and lose views. When he said this I commented in all kind-heart suggesting him to lose some views the next time he attempted to pass his male gaze into explicitly female issues because from his "punk-hardcore" origin story it made sense to me for him to make some people uncomfortable for the good of a community and he said "nah disagree" proving that his fake criticism of misogyny should be applied to him as well.
That’s the biggest issue about him in general, he didn’t know how to take criticism. He didn’t put any effort to understand where he might be lacking in. He wouldn’t admit where he’s wrong and uninformed and would lump everyone who criticised him as just haters 🤣. There’re so many people that were actually really nice at him when criticising but he always replied with stubborn attitude or ‘well they should watch my video all the way through I also said nice thing about this genre’. We know that, that’s why we try to reasoned nicely with you on things you get wrong on, because we thought you’re a reasonable dude yourself. But nope, he thought mentioning the ‘pOsiTivE siDe’ is proof that he is in the right and he’s the nice guy 🤦🏻. He wasn’t really a person that you can reason with. The ‘positive sides’ and ‘lessons’ that he put at the end of each video is just a video formula. I like the stubborn attitude tbh. Reminded me of few punk zine writers that I used to love reading. I myself was like that at some point in my life 🤣. I like his video still but yeah Finn isn’t someone that I would go to for an unbiased ‘genre breakdown’ video.
I don't get his dislike for melodic death metal but listens to shit like Attack Attack and Woe, Is Me which about 100 times more overproduced and clean sounding.
I actually enjoy his videos too, but I find it RIDICULOUSLY ironic that he doesn’t like black metal bc it’s “Generic, trying to hard to be edgy, there’s no innovation.” Like okay, find me a super innovative hardcore band that isn’t like every other hardcore band.
He never said it wasn’t true of hardcore. But hardcore doesn’t perceive itself as outsider art like black metal does lol. Hardcore knows what it is where black metal acts like it’s something it’s not.
Exactly . Are we just going to glaze over how Liturgy pretty much redefined black metal? Even after a literal decade of being made fun of and now we start seeing similar bands crop up and Liturgy getting the respect they deserve imo.
I've checked out some of this guy's content, most of his videos start with him making a false statement or voicing a dumb, generalizing opinion about a topic, goes on to act like he/his tastes are too good for said topic, contradicts then agrees with himself while shrugging it all off because of course he's above it all. Tool.
Punk Rock MBA is hella annoying. The guy is overly-confident, under-researched, and speaks with an unfounded authority. His criticisms are extremely surface level. I feel like I’m being lectured by some PR agent. He the type of guy that would try and push Dead Kennedy branded Crocs.
Bands like Bolt Thrower, who has a nigh if not perfect discography, literally kept death metal alive through the 90s and early 2000s. Also Immolation wasn't appreciated until years later.

Thanks for watching and making this! We could argue the minutiae until the cows come home but I appreciate that you watched and took the time to make this. Your point about misogyny is valid. It doesn’t make much sense to be selective about that stuff and tbh, I never even thought about what the lyrics to babykiller were. The only thing I really disagree with is people who think I “didn’t do my research” or “don’t know much about metal” simply because they disagree with my opinion. That’s just intellectually lazy. Just say you disagree, and tell me why. Thanks again, appreciate it!
Like i stated i think you did a great job with the "What Killed Death Metal" video. Your research is there and everything i would think of and more. Hopefully I didnt come off aggressive or arrogant in anyway as I was simply trying to do as you said which was to show my disagreements with my reasoning.
Using Lords of chaos as a means to get into Black Metal is some silly shit, the book has a lot of misinformation as to what happened, you should've just said go watch interviews about the 90's black metal bands from Norway. you don't have to name specific band members because of how TH-cams search engine is.
Your video on slam is fucking garbage and misses out key information on the current state of the genre. On top of that you can't stick to your principles as you "hate misogyny in slam" yet you recommend Uterovaginal Insertion of Extirpated Anomalies by Cephalotripsy. And because you ignore this you also miss out on probably the most popular band that plays that old school style of slam which is Kraanium. Your history on the genre is good bar missing out Mortician using movie samples but then it just turns into a shit show.
@@MedIevalCyrax he could also just have recommended Varg himself as source for what happened with him and the scene. Im pretty sure Varg a much more knowledgeable than Jonas Aukerland, and his testimony more true than Lords of Chaos.
I've always said that originality is kind of overrated. If you had to be completely original to be worth someones time, there wouldn't be very many good bands, and I think that is far from true.
A lot of people, myself included, enjoy things that are familiar. If I listen to a Black Metal band that doesn't sound like Black Metal, I'm not going to like it because I expected Black Metal and instead I got something else. Same goes for any genre, if a band is going to be innovative, they should call themselves something different.
Yeah! It's just how shit goes. When the Rolling Stones were new, they were considered Beatles clones. When Aerosmith came out, they were called Rolling Stones clones. I'm not a fan of any of those bands, but still.
@@darkhymnsfromthecoldnorth I hear ya. Like you said, originality is overrated. Everything's been done before, it's just about adding your own art to the existing genres at this point. Even new genres are just combinations of already existing ones. Black Metal for example may have been original in it's presentation but the actual musical style was basically surf rock and flamenco in the minor key with distorted electric guitar, which is probably why I've been getting into surf rock and flamenco lately. Lol
@@HateMyself247 Really being original these days to get away with it you would have to have a band mix metal and country. Thing is would any one buy it?
Funny he mentions Incantation and Immolation because even when Death Metal was suppossedly loosing it's shine, those bands were still respected by the counter BM movement.
This is one reason why I unsubscribed to him. Finn thinks he knows it all just because he has some booksmarts. One time he tried saying that EVERYONE uses autotune and when I explained to him that that's not true, he got all cocky and said hes "balls deep" into music production. That's funny because if he was that deep into it, then he should KNOW that not every successful artist in the whole fucking world uses autotune. If he tried saying that to underground hardcore fans they'd just laugh in his face!
@Death4Metal46 You sound like someone that’s willing to overlook the history of misogyny in the punk and hardcore scene. Yeah the punk and hardcore scene is “far left” but it’s also steeped in sexism. It’s been like this for decades now. Nothing has changed. The same people in the scene posting BLM will be the same dude bros covering up for their douchebag friends that harass girls in the scene.
His perspective is that of a tourist, an outsider looking in and subsequently shouldn't carry any value or weight for actual metal fans. I posted a reply to his death metal video and his first instinct was to say that "You probably weren't old enough to remember the old days and how it used to be", which is hilarious as he himself hates gate keeping. He has his audience, and those types can stay and watch him and Jared Dines all day long. They have a niche, and it would be nice if they stuck to it.

This is why I consider you an outsider, which I think is very fair. Personally I wouldn't expect a video I made on hardcore punk to be received super well by the serious hardcore guys, because I am not invested deep enough into it and its content to really do it justice, which is precisely how I feel about your foray into black metal. You simply dabble in it, and admit yourself you find a lot of it to be boring, which isn't really the best foundation for building an unbiased look at a very misunderstood genre. That being said he does have a habit of sometimes making videos on things that are clearly out of his depth or realm of understanding. As can be expected, in these particular videos he often tends to make a fool of himself as he makes no real effort to understand why those who disagree with him feel the way they do and instead let’s his own biases do the talking by making up his own trivial reasons for why they don’t think the way he does (we hate popular metal sub genres because we hate bands being successful, as well as other bullshit reasons that no metalhead actually has for disliking popular music but are rather reasons that people who do like it come up with in their own heads as to why we don’t like the music that they like). Like I said I do still like his channel because when he makes videos on things that are in his wheelhouse he is very intelligent and insightful. I just wish he wouldn’t make videos on things he knows very little about if he’s not going to make the effort to educate himself
I find it funny how he claims that death metal is dead just because it doesn't sound the way he prefers it. Who's gonna break it to him that his preferences don't sell the records or make the music.
His videos about powerviolence and hardcore I found it interesting. But i found a lot of contradictions in some of his videos, awful examples to get his point and bizarre information that I don t get the idea.

This was a really good video. You got your point across without looking like a jerk off and attacking the guy. You made some really good points and I honestly think that that makes for a really solid discussion. You should make a follow-up video to this, where are you kind of flip it and make recommendations for slam, death and black metal for those who think that those genres are stale and boring.
7:29 hey Wyatt I just wanna clear this part up since I know what he's referring to. Metalcore bands from the era ADTR came out had the occasional low death growl (often during breakdowns) In fact I think even Parkway Drive and Killswitch Engage had occasional death growls. And those bands were inspired by melodic death metal However the growl in metalcore is totally metalcore-sounding. It's way more "mid range" in comparison to the rest of metal vocals. There is a huge difference. In fact a lot of death metal fans barely register them as growls. Myself included
It's also ironic that the development and innovation of black metal mirrors that of hardcore.. you know post-hardcore and post-black metal. How can he not see that change to be extremely innovative? Even in regards to slam, the inclusion of some of the elements are just astronomically different to standard death metal. The only thing I can figure is that he is choosing to not see it as what it is "Slam death metal".
I think this Punk Rock MBA guy just regurgitates random youtube comments and metal-archives reviews without any independent thought of his own. His contradictions made that painfully clear.
I like Finn, but he reminds me of the old white male teachers in high school that would always criticize “old white men” definitely tries to seem hip and progressive in his videos. His only real grief with black metal seemed to be due to nsbm being a sub-genre. He makes good videos on core, but I’m surprised he thought suggesting lords of chaos as a reference was a good idea.
Great video. This guy seems to shoot out of the hip and states his weird opinions as facts, although, I guess I can see how a guy who's been there 25 years ago can think he's seen it all before. Still he relates this in pretty annoying way.
I find Antifa to be stale, repetitive and boring. If they would have just stuck to their original formula of giving each other swirlies in the McDonald's bathroom and listening to Maroon 5, they'd be a lot more interesting of a movement.
Death metal can sound any way the artists want it too. If it's brutal and fast that's great same for if it's slow and doomy. Also I'm of the beilief that raw production really elevates dissonant and avant garde styles of Death metal. Whereas very clean producion helps tech death because you can hear everything thing being played. The best thing about music is there is something for everyone. Nothing "HAS TO BE" a certain way.
Finn is in marketing so of course he only follows trends that’s what marketers do. He’s also in his 40s and doesn’t listen to anything past 1994 he’s kind of a stuck in the mud. Dude has never listens to shit like Ad Nauseam or Imperial Triumphant because his interest died in the late 90s. He comes off as disingenuous like a lot of OSDM and OSBM fans.
I've seen a few Punk Rock MBA vids, and though entertaining, he never passes up a chance to dunk on metal, or its fans. One video he devoted to whether he could learn to like classic metal. Anybody who claims to have to force themselves to appreciate the foundational stuff, I know is just pulling my chain.
He has some great videos that actually have facts especially his Ronnie Radke video. But god damn he can be ignorant sometimes. And I hate his woke videos.
He makes great content when he’s speaking on things he’s actually knowledgeable about and emotionally invested in. The problem is when he makes videos on things outside his wheelhouse. The “Why do people like black metal?” video is a perfect example of this. The whole thing is just him being condescending and talking down on black metal and it’s fans and giving his own biased reasoning for why he thinks that those who like it like it. It’s clear just by watching the video he never spoke to any legit black metal fans to gain their insight on what makes the genre special to them. It’s pretty insulting to a music genre’s fan base when you make a video about “why people like this type of music” and then deliver a video showing you made no effort whatsoever into actually understanding why it is that those people like said type of music.
He always uses those titles for his videos. He just does that to get people to click. You can guarantee he'll end up praising the genre or a group he might be talking about. He typically tries to keep it positive about everything, Except for black metal usually. He also ties stuff to more current generations because most people that watch him were born in the 90s. So that's probably why he ties in corny bands and fashion for the old scene kids and people really into screamo and metal core.
All that flog says is insert metal subgenre is dead because it's stale, btw have you heard new wave pop punk and how good it is? I legit thought he was satire at first
How is melodic hardcore any less ironic than melodic death metal? I think it's actually more of an oxymoronic, considering "death" is thematic, at least as a term, or descriptor, whereas hardcore is more of a description of sound, so wouldn't melodic hardcore be less hardcore? or Non hard hardcore? Why didn't he bring that up, and how does he not understand that he's a hypocrite?
I took particular issue with the slam video as there is multiple things that he missed out or simply didn't mention, as well as being a complete hypocrite in the process. Issues 1:Whilst true that many slam bands by themselves are not able to be financially successful, merchandising like Brutal Mind and Fat Tub Of Lard have been very successful in terms of finances. 2:Misogyny is part of slam and you can either like it or despise it. Finn states that he despises it even though one of the albums he recommended in his favourite slam albums section is very misogynistic (Cephalotripsy) 3: He mentions the different slam scenes around the world however fails to mention both the Indonesian slam scene or the UK slam scene (Being a british person it is very exciting to see slam become a somewhat popular thing in the UK) 4: Fails to mention movie samples being a staple within the genre and bands like Mortician popularising it. 5: Because he doesn't like misogyny in slam when he discusses the most popular bands in the genre, he doesn't mention Kraanium, who have easily become one of the most popular slam bands around. They play a very old school style of slam however Finn says that only deathcore inspired slam bands are the most popular. He also does not realise the irony in this as he is looking towards the most popular bands in the sub genre even when the genre has and always will be an underground genre of music.
Guys like Finn are funny exactly for the reasons people in the comments seem to dislike him for, being overly confident and having consistently negative contradicting opinions.

Dude hurts my head. When he brought up how NSBM exists then Doesn’t at all mention that there’s a whole sub genre of racist skinhead hard-core. Chode.

People would rather complain about "misogynistic" lyrics in brutal death metal, than the dozens upon dozens of mainstream artists across multiple genres who have actually hurt/abused women and underage kids

Troy Srebro this is true. It’s troubling that people like chris brown still have careers

It's honestly just fucking juvenile and boring. Like seriously-who. the fuck. are you? Why should literally anyone give a fuck about your opinion?

If his feelings get hurt this easy maybe slam just ain’t for him. Also complete hypocrisy, he doesn’t like “misogyny” but is totally cool with all the other stuff, total virtue signaling.
He also recommended Cephalotripsy's debut which is a very misogynistic album. It shows a complete lack of principles when it comes to music taste.
he's a hardcore punk kid. He's the kind of person of why I left that scene
What do you expect from a former writer of metalsucks?.
@@spongebitchbobface wait, he used to write for Metal Sucks? hilarious...
His complaint about melodic death sounds like the complaints the 2nd wave of black metal had against most Death metal of their time.
If you think death and black metal are stagnant, and have no experimentation...then you probably don't listen to much.
Probably thinks bands like ulcerate, Portal and imperial triumphant are generic for some odd fucking reason
There's so much more to Black Metal than just Mayhem. It's fused with literally any genre you could think of and more!

Not even all pop groups and singers use auto tune. Most "indie" bands don't use auto tune. The list goes on and on....
Almost every major label release has pitch correction more likely melodyne than autotune
I find it hilarious that he denounces Slam Death Metal for being misogynistic while being a member of the Hardcore scene. 😂

Lords of Chaos....meh. I used to really like that book. But now I see things differently. Glad Necrobutcher had nothing to do with that book.
On one video Black Metal is: Raw, chaotic, experimental
On another video Black Metal is: Boring music, boring forced edginess, boring recycled imagery
7:29 hey Wyatt I just wanna clear this part up since I know what he's referring to. Metalcore bands from the era ADTR came out had the occasional low death growl (often during breakdowns)
In fact I think even Parkway Drive and Killswitch Engage had occasional death growls. And those bands were inspired by melodic death metal
However the growl in metalcore is totally metalcore-sounding.
The only thing I can figure is that he is choosing to not see it as what it is "Slam death metal".
he called kim kardashian the most famous person on the planet???????????? wtf
It's a great way to get and keep sponsors by pretending to be progressive.
Think long and hard about how white your old teachers were...
Great video. This guy seems to shoot out of the hip and states his weird opinions as facts, although, I guess I can see how a guy who's been there 25 years ago can think he's seen it all before. Still he relates this in pretty annoying way.
Going through the back catalog, you never miss!
Doesn't this dude like pop punk? Which is a massively masochistic repetitive boring genre...odd
(skiz) every genre has their fair share of generic, repetitive bands. This doesn’t mean the genre is null and void.
I think he started a popular series and wants to keep it going but may be running a bit thin with the content since hes done so many now.
Dude in metal core thats enough said
Finn’s a businessman, simple as that. From a business perspective he’s good, from an artistic and historical perspective he’s spotty at best.
for the incoming Finn Simps
your middle aged daddy lost get over it
Punk Rock MBA sucks, Its a shame the he is one of the forefront commentators on "punk".
This guy MBA always contradicts himself, who cares about his opinions, this coming from a guy that likes Blink 182
Cold heartily agree with you!
Why does every genre of Metal needs to be super intimidating.
Why didn't he bring that up, and how does he not understand that he's a hypocrite?
punk rock calls slam as misgonist?
well, he's a poser tbh when he mentioned lardz ov cahoz lol
Immolations highlights were the entires 90s. How did they sound dated?
I wanna hear kim kardashian name 3 morbid angel songs.
I took particular issue with the slam video as there is multiple things that he missed out or simply didn't mention, as well as being a complete hypocrite in the process.
Issues
1:Whilst true that many slam bands by themselves are not able to be financially successful, merchandising like Brutal Mind and Fat Tub Of Lard have been very successful in terms of finances.
2:Misogyny is part of slam and you can either like it or despise it. Finn states that he despises it even though one of the albums he recommended in his favourite slam albums section is very misogynistic (Cephalotripsy)
3: He mentions the different slam scenes around the world however fails to mention both the Indonesian slam scene or the UK slam scene (Being a british person it is very exciting to see slam become a somewhat popular thing in the UK)
4: Fails to mention movie samples being a staple within the genre and bands like Mortician popularising it.
5: Because he doesn't like misogyny in slam when he discusses the most popular bands in the genre, he doesn't mention Kraanium, who have easily become one of the most popular slam bands around. They play a very old school style of slam however Finn says that only deathcore inspired slam bands are the most popular. He also does not realise the irony in this as he is looking towards the most popular bands in the sub genre even when the genre has and always will be an underground genre of music.
he is from portland, what do you expect?
no he’s not?
He lives in WA, dip shit
His channel and opinions are full cringe, but youtube is hellbent on recommending people watch it... I really shouldn't be surprised by that I guess.
Finn has always been a joke to me.
Guys like Finn are funny exactly for the reasons people in the comments seem to dislike him for, being overly confident and having consistently negative contradicting opinions.
