That early moment where Lucy meets the water farmer where she lowers her weapon when she starts talking to him really felt like she was entering a cutscene with an NPC.
My favourite game mechanic moment in the whole thing was actually when Dogmeat took obviously lethal damage from being stabbed by the Ghoul but she just lies there whimpering through a whole minutes-long fight scene and then is totally ok after the Ghoul injects her with a stimpak. That's right, Dogmeat is an essential character.
The one that really got me as "This is extremely Fallout gameplay" is the basically sidequest dungeon of the super market, where Lucy has to fight/talk her way through, gets to what amounts to a "Let the nice ghouls go/Let all the ghouls go" simplified moral choice, then walks out with new gear (the classic 10mm pistol and leather armour)
Maximus gets hit in the head really hard in basically every episode. I've heard a lot of people say that he's either got the idiot savant perk and/or his head is crippled.
A thing I really appreciated that you could only get by playing the games beforehand is the fact that you can imagine the stats and skills of each character, it's ultimately unimportant if you haven't played the games before, but that fact alone can tell you a lot about how they approached the world that this show's story is built upon.
This really felt like the right way to do a video game adaptation. It was really fun that there were a few episodes (like the Super Duper Mart) that genuinely felt like side quests. The shot of Lucy leaving the vault for the first time was so spot on. I could even imagine the SPECIAL stats for certain characters - like Norm is absolutely 10/10 Intelligence but like, 1/10 Charisma lol.
Just finished the Series and yeah, very much agree, they did a really great job adapting the themes, atmosphere and worldbuilding to tv. What they also managed to do, which i honestly didn't expect, was hold off on a lot of stuff i was afraid they'd overblow tbh. I didn't think they would be able to both do enormous amounts of "oh hell yeah i know that from the game" while completely keeping stuff like supermutants, deathclaws and even many of the robots only hinted at
2:04 in certain Fallout games Stimpacks indeed do NOT heal limb damage (the torso is considered a limb in game) e. g. in Fallout New Vegas one needs to visit a doctor, use a Doctor's Bag or Hydra to heal limb damage. Similar mechanics existed in Fallout 1 and 2 where Medicine and Doctor even were separate skills.
Actually V.A.T.S. predates Matrix by 2 years - back in 1997 it was called a "targeted/aimed shot" and because the game was already turn based the time was already stopped anyway - the actual novelty of it was the ability to target specific body parts (including eyes and the crotch) also it gave the player a raised chance to land critical hits which result in extreme gore as seen in the show.
Here’s how you know this show rules: my mum, who does not know of/enjoy video games outside of water drop on her phone, let alone a series like Fallout, really liked this show after just two thirds of the first episode
as someone who spent a ton of time watching my friends play the fallout games in college, it was really cool to feel like this was such a similar experience despite being a tv show. i was really impressed
Probably the clearest sign of how good this show was adapted was how people who’ve never played Fallout and never understood the appeal, like me, are suddenly all in on the show and the games
I absolutely loved the Fallout TV show. It was a perfect adaptation of the video game. To be completely transparent, I was incredibly nervous at first, being a huge Fallout fan. However, after the first episode, I was hooked and ended up binge-watching the entire series over a weekend. I felt it was fantastic. Great analysis like always Jenna!
the one thing that took me out of it was Max taking out that yao guai with a single head shot. i could only dream of encountering a big demon bear that isn't unnecessarily a bullet sponge!
I personally liked that change tbh. Yao Guai are black bears, they’re skulls aren’t that thick compared to a grizzly. It makes sense that one could be taken one with one skillfully placed shot to the dome. I haaaate the bullet sponge enemies in these games, lol why does a fucking human being survive 4 shots to the dome with an explosive shotgun. When I play 4 I play with mods that drastically change the damage values so I and humanoid enemies will die much quicker and only enemies with armor like death claws or power armor wearers are still bullet sponges.
@@daneherron7014 Yeah, and the yao guai change goes hand in hand with the more realistic tone of the show with humans not being bullet sponges either, while still keeping the core of what makes the combat satisfying (the gore, the intensity). People tend to go down in one hit, pretty realistically, but there are still more guys and it's pretty satisfying.
@@athenabrown3117 100%. I am curious about how the show is treating ghouls though. They seem to be stronger in general than in game and possess regenerative powers. We see The Ghoul take like 4 or 5 shots in Filly and he barely even reacts and then of course Thaddeus has his foot and then his neck immediately heal after taking the “ghouls serum”.
Yes! I'm so much more interested in the idea of live action game adaptions translating game experiences vs the setting or lore (which is still great, dont get me wrong!)
One thing I like about this show is that it takes the worldbuilding seriously AND isn't afraid to lean into the absurdity of a lot of the dialogue/concepts. Stuff like the "you mean use my cock?"/ "you wanna make my cock explode now?" scenes felt so on point for some of the stupid shit characters say, while also making sense considering his and lucy's respective backgrounds.
I only played the first Fallout (because I am Bad at games with a major fighting mechanic and have no interest in putting in the time to gitgud) so I've essentially never played Fallout at all, but I REALLY liked this show. I was heartbroken when it seemed like The Ghoul killed Dogmeat and it looked like he was going to be an absolute unambiguous baddie
Great video Interesting to still hear the Matrix referred to as the top/peak, even as a kid I thought the matrix bullet time looked weird, and games lapped it by the time Sniper Elite 'explode an organ in x-ray slow motion' came around
Still a bit confused about the potion that turns one into a ghoul and cures one from it? Don't think that is in the game or has been explained. Unless someone can offer some insight.
i don't know if this particular thing is in any of the games, but it's clear that whatever the ghoul juice is, it's incredibly radioactive. in the games, ghouls are healed by radiation. it would certainly make the doc's surprise make sense, as presumably ghoulification is pretty rare. also, it's the color of mtn dew, which is pretty radioactive-looking lol.
That early moment where Lucy meets the water farmer where she lowers her weapon when she starts talking to him really felt like she was entering a cutscene with an NPC.
You're completely right. The show runners have already said that was on purpose.

7:36 the camera very subtly moves to the uncanny frame the same way the camera/screen snaps when you start dialogue with an npc. Very clever

“murders entire town but feels bad about hurting the dog” really was a powerful fallout vibe

can't wait for the Mysterious Stranger perk to pop up in season 2
Nice Jenna. For me, the show is just the kind of class-conflict-monster-hunting-power-armoring-gee-whiz I was looking for.

imo that is HIGH PRAISE for Fallout

Knight Hubris is pretty good, but you missed Knight Die-tus

That's actually a little sad, really.
@@orijimiWhat makes it sad?
Some of the dialogue felt like it was meant to be a reasonable response to other dialogue choices string of pearls style.

0:10 I also liked the Resident Evil show and was very alone in that opinion, so thank you!!
🎶🎶🎶 Bloody mess! 🎶🎶🎶
I loved your delivery on that line! 🙂👍
the bigger the theme the longer the pause LMAO and i cant unsee it

Cant watch this yet bc spoilers but I'll be back
Jenna is in fact in love with the HUD.
alright fine i’ll watch the fallout show. great work as always!
The only major thing I've seen from this show is Lucy desperately drinking the irradiated water and it definitely piqued my interest

I haven't finished Fallout yet, but I think they did a great job balancing video game mechanics with cinematics so far
I've only ever played the Fallout mobile game where you run a vault, but this makes a great pitch for the tv show!
Thank you for giving me the push to warch the show! It was great.
Great video

Great show, great video!
commenting for engagement, but I'm not ready for spoilers
Great video Jenna!
Hades II is in early access!
We stan themes
We LOVE magic prune juice!
I too constantly have a 69 on my head
Why is it no one ever gets his name right? WAL-TON
yeah they definitely should have reset after dogmeat, unrealistic, need to save the dog always
This is a Fallout 4/76 type world, permanent companions are essential characters and being killed only means they go down until stimpacked
@@decepticonsretreat you dont need to explain it to me
FINALLY someone else able to admit that the Netflix Resident Evil show is pretty good.
good one!
