I'm a passenger who ride public transportation and I would never tell any public transit employee how to do their job because I'm not driving 40 foot and 60 foot buses or a train vehicle. Thank you for your service transit employees who operate vehicles. Appreciate this video Bus Driver Life!

That last guy is the average passenger today. Since the pandemic, all rules in society seem to have gone out the window. Passengers don't feel they have to pay, talk to you disrespectfully and threaten you constantly. Motorists ignore traffic lights, signs and double lines causing absolute mayhem on the roads! The level of patience, concentration and self control needed to navigate this 💩💩💩every day is exhausting! It's gotten so much worse than it was when I started because people didn't have cell phones 35 years ago! That causes problems with passengers and motorists because no one is paying attention to anything but their nothing, generally unimportant, non life or death conversations! I'm glad I'm at the end of and not starting my career as a bus operator!

When I CLOSE my mouth and say nothing I usually get extremely little to NO comment or anything else from people boarding the bus. No assaults physically, or verbally. Do you get how this works? I'm a bus operator. Granted, I haven't been doing the job very long. I learn a lot from your videos. But honestly, it makes no difference to me if the person pays the fare or not. I'm getting paid to operate the bus regardless. Why hold up the whole bus to get into it with the person? My company has a policy not to get into fare disputes with customers. They just tell us to ask for the fare once, if they don't pay. Tell them they ride at their own risk.

There are ticket machines at the buses and bus stops. There are ticket controllers randomly checking passenegers if they have a ticket. Driver's job is to drive a bus not to sell tickets. Not arguments with passengers about that whatsoever

I’ll eat crow. Self driving buses will never happen, at least within the next 10 years. I’m totally against self driving anything. Technology can be great but anything that runs by software is just as bad as human interaction. Our electric ProTerra buses are run by a computer and malfunction all the time and usually at the wrong place and time. Once was Almost was rear ended when the bus suddenly shut down in the middle an intersection. Another time was on the freeway traveling 65mph the bus shut down. Yes a diesel bus can fail too but you have more control.
The only real way to have self driving work if it is on its own route and roadway other than that I see total failure. If I’m proven wrong, I’ll eat my comment and opinion.

This is the method I’ve settled on so far since I started driving the city bus about 6 months ago. It seems to help weed out at least some of the potential troublemakers. It also dignifies the customer letting them pay their own fare, whatever they can afford at the time. Where I drive there’s a lot of homeless, addicts, felons and so some people literally only have changed their pocket.

I worked as a night auditor as a relief. It was free travel if you had a weekly train ticket. Midnight to dawn these services ran & the first fares had $50.00 notes for $2.20 fares - the drivers carried minimal change due to security. I used to get people on asap to move them off on their 2 hour trips home. Often the scammers used Seniors Passes to pay a flat fee then not pat the $9.90 (long trip). I could issue fines but preferred they paid the full fare - even kids for scamming the system. $9.90 was the max price compared to a $220 Fine.

In Portland, the rule of thumb is *do not address passengers* who don't pay. If it's anything I have learned over the years, it's that if I speak up (however righteously), at best, it will cause an unnecessary argument that the passenger WILL win (or at least it looks that way in their mind). Forget arguing about fare, or anything else for that matter. Now, when it comes to issues of safety, I put the person on notice. If they don't stop harassing other passengers, or doing things that are unsafe, then I ask them to get off the bus. If they won't do that, I remain cool as a cucumber, call my dispatcher, inform them of the situation, and they send a Road Supervisor. After that, I pull the bus over, secure it, open the doors, shut off the engine, and then make a public announcement to all passengers apologizing for the delay, and that, due to an unforeseen issue, the journey will not continue until it's resolved... And we wait... I don't address the problem passenger at all. Instead, I pull out one of my cruise magazines or a steamy romance novel, enjoy a good read as the minutes roll by, and remember that with each passing minute, my bank account is getting *FATTER,* and theirs isn't (in fact it's likely they don't even have a bank account at all, and if they do, it's shrinking!!). Attitude is everything, and when you treat everybody like they're your neighbor and act like everything is business as usual, the problem takes care of itself sooner or later. Either the person alights on their own volition (c'mon, I know you can walk the two blocks it takes to get to the next stop), or the other passengers get involved and bum-rush the offender out the door (I've had that happen!) - either way, everything usually gets taken care of even before the Road Supervisor shows up. I'm super nice to everybody, but nobody gets their own way on my bus anymore. I have ways of getting people to tow the line. I do it all with a smile, never argue, and don't let their crap get to me - because you know the second you let someone else's crap get to you, THEY HAVE YOU. Uh-uh. Homie don't play that no more.

Where I'm from in Australia, anytime a passenger didn't want to pay for their bus fair or most of it if they paid a small amount of it. The money usually came out of that bus drivers pay check which isn't fair, because I remember one time this lady didn't pay the $2.50 and the bus driver we had is very kind and he ended up having to pay for the ladies bus fair because she got off and didn't want to pay. And those are the types of people yeah sure we can't get rid of, but we can try and stop which doesn't always work because of a number of reasons. Please people just pay your bus fair if you catching a bus, because some of that money can go to both new buses but also fuel money and to the bus driver's pay check. If you don't want to pay you don't catch the bus. Yeah sure if you know the bus drivers and they let you ride for free then sure maybe, but still always pay the full amount for bus fairs if your a couple dollars or cents short maybe let the bus driver know "hey I'm a couple short may I possibly pay the rest when I can?" and the bus driver may let you do that. And if you do that a lot and pay the rest like you say they'll let you here and there get on because they know your honest and still willing to pay the full amount.

Have you ever had a situation where the fare box didnt print the oass if so what do you do? It happened to me today and normally they would just fill out a card and move on with it. But the driver dudnt want to do the paper work as in fill out the card so he just got a pass on another bus at the park and ride.

We have people who do not have to pay and some do have to. I observed some who owe nothing still act as if they are entitled. Not all of them and some fuss over everything! We pick up at their residence, appointment, etc and yake them to their destination and some still go out of their way to try and make the driver feel like crap. Again not all passengers are like that.

The first lady remind me of Edith from Archie bunker and the second guy remind me of Archie bunker lol. I remember the fair was going up in my area pre-Covid and During Covid the fair was free, and now after covid the fair is extremely reduced ,I’ve noticed in my area for some reason there’s not as many passengers on the city bus as there was pre-Covid , i’m not for sure why because my city is a fairly big city and there used to be a lot of people riding the bus . It seems like there’s not too many school buses in my area so the high schoolers have to ride the city bus and you have people going to work and then you have the every day people getting on and off the bus.

I'm a part time bus driver in Germany.
I don't care if you ride without a ticket... I'm paid to drive the bus from A to B. I don't get extra pay, or less pay for checking tickets.
But try to screw me over, I'm not afraid to call you out on your BS. I've had this... Usually from couples. They buy one ticket, go to the back of the bus and a few minutes later, come back demanding a second ticket, saying "I forgot to print it out". No, I didn't forget. You're trying to screw me over, so suck it!
Missed your stop? Sorry, you get off at the next bus stop. No, I can't just "stop here" to let you out. There are rules. Not my rules, state rules!
I have a good day job and I was in the military, so I don't care who you think you are. I'm not scared to tell you off.
I'm not gonna get fired, because you filed a complaint. Bus drivers/ all drivers are in high demand, so best tone down your attitude and act like a normal human being.
I treat people the way they treat me. Treat me well and I'll do the same. We might end up as friends. But try to start something and I'll finish it.
And if you play with the stop button, I will pull over at the next bus stop, turn off the engine and lights and wait for someone (I don't care who it is) to get off the bus. I don't care if I'm late, or that I'll lose my break. I'm gonna wait. And no, nobody can tell me to "Move it". This is Europe. And maybe all the stress got to me and I can't keep going. Maybe I need medical assistance for my psychological stress. Maybe you (as a problematic passenger) get to your destination a lot later.
Like I said, treat me well and I'll do the same for you. Look for trouble and you will find it.

My personal opinion is if you can pay the fare, you should pay the fare. I've also experienced it when i dumped my change in too fast. Long story short a ride (which includes a 90 minute transfer) cost $2.50 and a day pass cost $5.00 (weekends / holidays only) and the beep went off when 2.50 was paid to let the operator know the full fare was paid. I once dumped twenty quarters into the farebox and had a dispute with the driver didnt see me put in the $5. Very annoying i get where the operator is coming from totally do, and I should have put ten quarters in, beep, then ten more, beep and then there would be no dispute. But I wanted my day pass which i paid for. Another time, I put ten quarters in and the operator told me i was a dime or nickel short. I'm like ??... I always counted my change before I got on made sure it was right.
Nowadays, I use a transit farecard so no more fare disputes for me. Just tap my card and go on with my day. Do they have those in Sacramento? I remember the first time i used one of those the operator was confused didn't know what i did. They looked at their system and it indeed showed them a valid tap was made. This wasn't as much of a dispute as the operator learning how the system worked, which is amazing.
    Another time, i put

Don't have your pass ready? You should have it ready to go before those doors even open, no excuses. You can wait until the others are on board, if you still don't have it ready then you can wait for the next one. Not waiting for someone that thinks up stupid games.
You don't pay, off the bus or you get a fine. That simple. (50 Euro + costs for the ride = 55 USD + costs for the trip)
However in the case you point to as a real life example, that would mean the police would get involved and that passenger would get fined for that and perhaps even arrested.

He Got very quiet and drove like he had some damn sense once I let him know I didn’t come on the bus bragging or anything like that but he was driving was reckless. And I told him on the straightaways it’s cool but when you’re turning, you have people sitting behind you 5 to 8 mph is as fast as you need to go in a turn plus he was rude as hell I took the rudeness but me sliding out of My seat pissed me off after I finish berating I gave him $20 for lunch 😂😂😂He’s pretty cool now, but I was not playing that bullshit.

When it comes to fares lots of transit train operators to not even say anything anymore. You put a quarter, here is a transfer. Sorry I just filled my card with money, ok sit down. I think in the fares are not worth the drivers life, than the company has more issues also like lawsuits and all. Plus imagine the stress all day of fighting over it every ride, focus on driving with less pressure on the mind is safer for those that did pay and deserve arrival safe at their destination.

Fare recovery is such a miniscule portion of the budget for most systems. Now, its still important due to underfunding in the first place(every dollar counts), but still. Dealing with fare issues just delays the bus more, causing unreliability, which discourages use, which just adds to no one wanting to fund transit in the first place. Plus it would be dumb to die over a couple bucks...

About that "one stop" guy, he is just trying to get over. Everyone else who rides public transportation realizes you have to PAY for the service!!! It isn't about the stop you get off at. You are utilizing a service; you have to pay for it. In all that time this person was arguing with the bus driver, he could have already been where he needed to go. There has only been one time I didn't pay for a bus ride. I was in Chicago, and I had my CTA transit pass. I put it in the machine, and it said it had expired. Now I knew I had just bought a pass, so I didn't understand why it was expired. I was getting ready to get off of the bus and walk to get another pass, but the driver just let me on anyway. I wasn't trying to pull a fast one, I really thought the pass was still good. So, while I am one the bus, I am looking through my wallet and found the pass that I purchased. Turns out, I didn't throw the expired pass away. To be honest, I was slightly embarrassed (getting on for free) because I didn't want the driver to think I was trying to mooch a ride. If I use a service, I pay.

I have seen it as a bus rider where people get on the bus and they are searching,,, and searching,,,, and searching,,, for the fair. It’s like people don’t have their stuff together. I mean if you know,,, you ar riding a bus have your fair together. I pay on my phone and what i end up doing is bring the app that i use for tranzit up and having that ready so when I get on board the bus driver sees what i have and itis their. Their is no rummaging around or forgetting. It’s called Bering curtious. The things that some people do as a fellow passenger is really nuts. I wish everyone would quoperate and do what they are gold. This is why so many people have problems on the bus cause they think the driver is rude or something when it was the passenger but yet they want to blame the driver. Shows you that the passenger is not correct. The driver always,,, has the say cause they are in charge not us as passengers. It irks me that people do this kind of garbage to our bus drivers. It’s not O.K. People think they are entitled to something.
