I got this mower too, Lord! It has so many safety switches on it. If your mowing and lean over to pick up a large stick or something, the seat has a safety button, it will stop. The mowing guard has a safety button. If something gets lodged in there like a stick or rock, it will stop the mower. Of course it won't go in reverse if the blade is down.
Theres a real easy way to around the reverse issue. Just unplug the switch behind the shifter and youre good. You can squeeze your hand in there and reach it without taking anything off.
When checking starters I put a jump pack directly to the positive lug on the starter and the negative to the engine. I have the type with a switch so I just use the switch on my jump pack. That way I bypass the battery, solenoid and switch. Great video TY for the starter rebuild hacks.👍
Glad to see Troy built getting worked i’ve had very good luck with the Troy built name and like most lawn and garden equipment as it ages it’ll need some work on them so I’m glad to watch videos on troubleshooting problems with them thanks again
Mine was doing the same thing on a Saber mower. Turned out to be the wire ends positives and grounds all needed to be cleaned from the battery to the starter including start solenoid wires. All of them. It started and ran great after that.
Most every video I watch every mechanic just loves to work on these type mowers. (NOT). Was a rather pain to get fixed but you got it done. Great job. Thanks for the videos.
Thanks for the video. I know I have a bad starter (shorted to ground) on my TB20R, but had no idea what was involved in getting it out. Thanks for the walk-through to remove it for repair. Unfortunately, I needed to mow the grass REAL bad, so already spent $2600 on a new John Deere S100.
Paper clips cut.& bent into u shaped hooks will keep the bushings held back to put together easier after. You lubricate it up again on both bushing ends of that starter.
i got the tiny rider for cheap, nope not running, i went through the wiring, now seeing how the springs go on your carb, it's going to run now (thankx)
A quick tip to you on that part. I would get another one of those parts to have on hand just in case you might half to do that again later on down the road to on another ridding lawnmower for someone else to. To in the near future also. Cause it is possible to happen that way. I've seen it dozens of times myself over the years working on them myself to.
I just mowed most of my yard and turned it off and came in the house for a drink. Went back out there and it only clicks really bad. I can't get it to on. Suggestions? I'm going to go wiggle the battery cables to see if that helps.
Yup. I heard getting to the motor is quite the task. My stator/alternator seemingly stopped working. So now I gotta dig into it deep. It's not so much the cost of the part, it's the time and scheduling an afternoon, just to get the part installed. These MTD products sure as hell take an awful lot of nursing to get them up and running each time I need a mow. In the mean time, I'm charging the battery for a half an hour before each start up, due to a weak charge. So annoying. But it's a minor inconvenience. It's the major electrical failures I can't diagnose that I dread the most.
is there anyway you can post a link to the exact starter or the exact part you replaced? im having the exact same issue! new to this got the mower for 300 knowing it wouldnt start hoping i can get it going, THANKS FOP THIS VIDEO! @Small Engine DIY
Just watched this video for the 3rd time in about 6 months. I like your videos. However, I just notice that you didn't check or adjust the valve lash on the motor. That can cause difficulty in starting and and to the fact that people will keep grinding away on the starter longer to get the motor started. Thus putting a premature wear and death to a starter by that over use of the starter. Thanks.
Whats the problem it just spibes over and doesn't crank ? Put spark ung In and new gas bit still just sins over like no fire but its sparking help please
That starter needs lube up again the sleeve bushings are drying out is all that's wrong with that starter.,or it has worn brushes inside of it one. A smear of marine grease on both ends where those bushings are. will let that starter work again freely.
Hello, I have one of this TB30R, it cranks but won't start.... could it possibly be the starter also? The difference on the one I have is that it doesn't sound like it's grinding like this one, it just cranks but won't try to start. I've already changed the carburetor, battery and spark plug. Any help appreciated.
I'm having same problem. I bought a spark tester and there is no spark in spark plug or ignition coil. Pain to get to the coil in engine. fortunately I found this video because I now know I have to take gas tank loose to get to other engine screws. Hoping to do that today. Hope this helps. Good luck.
Thank you. I had a terrible time trying to find a video on this. I hate going in blind.
Replacing the Brushes on the start was good to see 👍

A little upkeep will keep them running for a long time.

I go straight to the valve cover and check valve lash and compression release, most of the time it’s the problem not starter

Do you have a video of replacing blade shaft?

I hope you still get it repaired...

Where did you buy the new brushes from? I can’t find a kit online.

You really dug into that one. Nice diagnosis and fix.

Good luck with it. Take your time, I'm sure you can figure it out.👍👍
I have exact same model, starter went out today. I can't locate replacement online? Need a little help please and thanks!
I found it in Amazon, not cheap though.

The engine needs a new cam for the decompression release.

Can you adjust/level the deck? Mine is 1/4 inch lower on the left side
Thanks for the video. Great job!
My TB30 has a clipping discharge problem that causes the chute to clog up and tearing up the blade belt
It just lubrication inside of it is all bud. Those bushings need greased lightly.& maybe brushes replaced inside of possibly to.
Do you have a part number
Nice job, thanks for an interesting vid, 👍👍
Does anyone know the name or part number that was replaced?
Whats the problem it just spibes over and doesn't crank ? Put spark ung In and new gas bit still just sins over like no fire but its sparking help please
Need a growler to properly test it also
Have you ever seen a battery that reads minus 12.7 volts? And don't tell me my tester leads are plugged in backwards

He should have put a new starter in it. They’re cheap enough
You will end to grease up both ends are at need light grease.

Compression release, adjust the valves
No it cause their no longer getting lubricate.& will wear out brushes inside of them to. Cause that reason alone also.

Wow. I hope you are OK.
👍
