How To Build An Amazing Guitar With Scrap Wood

  • Matt found a nice big piece of poplar in an office building, unfortunately it was rendered almost useless for guitar building. It was about 1/4 inch thinner than it needed to be and someone had covered it with latex paint and drilled a bunch of holes in it too!
How could this be turned into a neat guitar… is it even worth it to try?
In this video Matt shows you a little outside the box thinking to answer the first question. Only you can decide the answer the second.

I prefer building with blocks like you have done. When finished it looks more interesting! I have a huge pile of strips that are 8' long and 1/4" thick that I will be gluing together for my next instrument. I did this for my electric contra double bass that stands 6.5 foot tall. Its cheaper to do. I also grab old furniture and wood on the side of the road to use. I'm about to build a guitar that will feature a hand carved body of maybe a skull that will be three dimensional. I normally make violins and harps, but now that I am playing lead guitar I will be switching to electric guitar making! Let me tell you what I use for stain... I use food coloring! It makes the best stain in the world. I do all my instruments in red. It goes on a dull dark red, but when varnished, amazing! Food coloring is so translucent that its not possible to hide the grain of the wood. The first time I apply the food coloring I sand it all back off. The reason why? Well when sanding is done right no red will be left, and this way I know that I got even the slightest scratch or dent out. I start with a 220 grit and work to a 2500. By the time I am done, the wood is as smooth as glass, and the varnishing is easier to do. Also after every 5 coats of varnish, out of 50, I use Pearldrops Toothpaste as my polish. By the time I'm done it looks like the instrument was dipped in melted glass. I don't even own a buffer, nor need one, doing it this way! Check out my double bass at: th-cam.com/video/Gp1BW8zdu4I/w-d-xo.html

matt, I am a body and paint tech and I just finished the first guitar using simtec sealer. great product. I've done some sunburst finishes but mostly solid colors. If I need to prime, I use a high build heavy fill grey polyester primer. It uses the same activator as the simtec and is also used in fiberglass. my thought is, lay out a coat of simtec then lay the cloth then more simtec. I'm not that crazy about the glue underneath. your thoughts. Donald in louisiana

... Hope you realize you cut all the Whole Notes out of that guitar!
I did a local guitar show where I sold bare routed bodies along with some used guitars and the one I made out of 3/4inch thick left over strips, half of which were barkless 'live edges' with just a bridge humbucker route generated the most interest and cool comments and sold faster than any of the nicer conventional ones. So I get a laugh any time I see a forum post where someone gets overly worried about two or three piece bodies. Check out Wallace Guitars in Detroit as well as Kelly Guitars in NYC. More guitars should be built from recycled or local new lumber not all that rain forest depleting desires.

Im not a huge fan of paisley guitars. Usually when paisley guitars show up in the shops in my hometown they sit forever. Personally I think doing a light green stain with a good clear coat would look pretty sweet. The green would make the poplar really pop(lol) and besides isn't the whole point of the project to show what can be done with recycled wood

It was a wooden barn that needed major repairs. The roof fell in and the it collapsed. 👎 I thought nothing of it as a kid. As an adult, I understand how much was lost and it makes me sick, even today. Also makes me sick to think about all of his stuff that I sold to support my drug habit at the time. Yea, I was a piece of shit for a few years. Thank God I finally left all that behind and grew up.

It was standard tech for years to always have a top and back on a solid body guitar be about 1/4 to 1/3 the total thickness and the back 2/3 to 3/4 because that was what a Les Paul had. Half and half we were taught was no good because the top would not transmit yada yada yada. In other words it was cargo cult, Gibson did it so we must also, thinking. Half and half gives you that Berlinetta Boxer look that can be really cool. Alex built one of his that way with beautifully contrasting woods and it looks nice. Of course it has the steer penis headstock and open control cavities at back but the wood is nice.
Junked pianos yield a LOT of wood that is too thin for a 2/3 back thickness but just right for fifty/fifty. I like junk Pianos. Any good piano tech will set you up if you will haul the pianos off and scrap them out. The cast iron frames and the copper and brass strings have scrap value so if you have apprentices, hangers-on, et al you can put them to work. Old home organs are chock full of toobs and many have good solid wood too and if they are not tone wheel Hammonds or one or two specific other models have noooo value either. Churches being remodeled or deconsecrated will yield a lot of solid wood too. Library card catalogs used to be the motherlode but they are mostly all gone by now.
I was watching a docu on Rick Kelly in NYC who is mostly building guitars out of old growth salvaged pine from Manhattan buildings being renovated. It looks like there is way more wood there than he could ever use, someone could cut a deal with the salvage places in old cities, not just NYC, to get this stuff. In the midwest, barn wood is popular but I am not really into the barncaster thing. Kelly is also using pine with no truss rods for necks and I guarantee that they will curl up in ten or fifteen years. Old growth and 100 year seasoned or not pine is still pine.
I like to use old wood whenever possible and when the result will look professional. A lot of great wood goes to the landfill every day.

    • @TexasToastGuitars

We like to think that the neck construction or style is less important. We like to build the best guitar we can and do it in lots of different ways.
In other words they all work well and have strengths and weaknesses. However, to say one or another is "the best" is going to, at the very least, irritate 50% of guitar players

What is the best wood to build a guitar with. I've heard a lot of different types of wood. But not one specific type. So what's a good type of wood to build a guitar with.

    • @TexasToastGuitars
      @TexasToastGuitars  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Carl.
There is no best wood but there are lots of great woods. One thing I had to learn about guitars buyers is they tend to be very traditional. So for example... if you build a set neck guitar with mahogany and rosewood you won't have to convince people that it is worthy since they already think that. I have used lots of crazy woods in the past and always come back to the stuff customers expect. It is not because there is a shortage of people who say the alternative woods are cool but there may not be a line out the door of people willing to pay for it.

Texas Toast Guitars the technique your using to add the cloth to the wood is kind of like how you make micarta for use in scales for knives and other items. It is the process of layering different types of cloth and soaking them in resin and adding pressure to create a solid blank that can be cut and sanded for various projects. One being scales for knives.
