  • Ten years ago this week, Kylie Minogue was at the top of The Official Singles Chart with 'Can't Get You Out Of My Head'. To celebrate its anniversary, we chatted to her old mentor, legendary hit maker, Pete Waterman. Pete reveals what it was like in Camp Kylie the week 'Can't Get You Out Of My Head' went to Number 1, his favourite memories of working with her, and how Simon Cowell passed up the opportunity to release her first UK hit 'I Should Be So Lucky' because she was a TV star.

I understand that there was a rumor that 'Cant Get You Out Of My Head' was offered to Victoria Beckham, but she turned it down suggesting that it wouldn't be a hit.
Later on, after Kylie had a smash hit with it and it was playing everywhere, Victoria and David Beckham went into a fashionable shop in London and the moment that David heard the song he said "Now it's going to kick off!" expecting his wife to go into a tantrum.

The song was offered to Britney Spears and Kylie was offered Toxic, good job they switched. Also with Victoria Beckham not really a good singer and no longer being in the music business, this song would never have reached number one and would have died a slow death never to be heard again unlike Kylie who reinvents it when she performs, remember the Brit Awards performance!

@@julessherwood It was a phenomenal hit with Kylie. Almost as good as 'I should be so Lucky'. There was a funny story about that with Pete Waterman too. He signed Kylie not really knowing that she was everyone's sweetheart from 'Neighbours' and when one of his business partners was told he'd signed Kylie - he said - "But it's Kylie!" Pete simply did not understand that he'd signed the most desirable female on television soaps.

@@WOTArtyNoobs At the time the lads were busy writing and producing for other artists and had not seen Neighbours unlike the rest of us here in the UK where it was shown 2 times in the daytime. Amazing how they wrote the song in 40minutes and she recorded it in a hour and was back on flight to Australia heard nothing until someone at the BBC heard they had signed Kylie and sent a film crew out to Australia so they could show the video of I Should Be So Lucky on Noel Edmonds Xmas show and the rest as they say is history.
