  • Join me as we delve into food history and recreate one of the most bizarre recipes from World War II - Hitler's explosive chocolate bar designed to assassinate Winston Churchill!
Today, I’m uncovering the shocking tale behind Adolf Hitler's audacious attempt to eliminate his adversary with a booby-trapped chocolate treat: all while trying to safely re-create the recipe.
But our journey doesn't end with exploding chocolate - I’m also delving into the broader context of wartime sabotage, and the American military chocolate that soldiers called ‘Hitler’s Secret Weapon’.

I'd never heard of this plot before! Fascinating how creative they got - almost sort of like the wartime equivalent of those inexplicable presents you get from relatives who are on heavy medication.
Did the D ration bar cause the runs, or was it a forerunner of the Meals that Refuse to Excrete? (MREs apparently were at one point legitimately engineered so that soldiers would only need to dump once every three days or so, as they're very vulnerable to enemy action while on the loo.)

I have no idea, but I can tell you for sure that I’m researching MREs next. Though may have a pass at recreating them judging by the premise…
And yes, there are a lot of accounts of American GIs with the runs after the bars. Tooth breaking chocolate has to be the creation of some kind of hyper sadistic Willy Wonka. Though (as an Englishman who’s not the biggest fan of Hersey’s), it doesn’t make it sound too much less appetising than the norm.

"Sie wissen genau, alle Lebensmittel fur Gift zu prüfen, aber sie werden nie Sprengstoffe vorhersagen!"
(My best attempt at the German for, " They know full well to test all foodstuffs for poisons, but they will never predict explosives!")
