I went on a college ski trip to Vermont and wore a Bowie knife about 2/3 the size of this beast for the drive up. All my friends broke my balls about it. I said, "If I'm traveling in the mountains, I always wear a knife". Later, at the dinner we were all served these giant, tough, Prime Ribs as part of the ski package. Nobody could cut theirs, except me. Had 20 plus people ask to borrow it and happily watched it being passed hand to hand, table to table.

This really would be a great alternative to a machete for wilderness survival. Most machetes won't fit in a backpack, but this will. Great review man 👍
Bowie is a corruption of the French “bois oui.” Literally, “woodlands, yes.” This is a contraction of the first line of a ribald French poem that was popular is the mid-nineteenth centory “Bois oui, mon ami, pour montrer nos magnifiques lames aux arbres tremblants.” Roughly translated “Woodlands yes, my friend, to show our magnificent blades to the trembling trees.” Decades later the famous French explorer and Egyptologist Jacques LaLanne designed a knife suitable for heavy use, including prying open burial vaults in the pyramids, while at the same time being scientifically balanced to be useful for detailed tasks such as buttering a croissant or even “le tranchage du fromage” (literally “the slicing of the cheese”). It was more or less the tracker knife of its day. On his lecture tours (the rough equivalent of modern TH-cam videos) LaLanne incorporated tales of unimaginable danger in which he used his trusty knife to prevail. His magic lantern show always included several slides of this knife and he handed out order forms at the end of each show (the rough equivalent of “I’ve included a link in the description, remember to click like and subscribe.”). His advertising relied heavily the poem (“Bois oui, mon ami…) and the knife became known as a “Bois Oui.” When he was a student at the Sorbonne, Daniel Boone attended one of LaLanne’s lectures and was so impressed with the knife that he borrowed $1,000 (approximately $25,000 today) and purchased the exclusive US distributorship of the Bois Oui knife, which he Americanized to Bowie. Or at least that is what I told my wife to rationalize another knife purchase. She eventually relented when I told her that it was heavy enough to handle the toughest of winter squash while at the same time perfectly balanced for fine dicing and could even julienne green beans. Guess I am going to have quite a bit of kitchen duty - but it was worth it to get my very own “Bois Oui.”
Mark Tull..great information..so the Bowie knife is a french knife? And the USA takes the design for themself and then say that Jim Bowie invented this knife?
You sure know how to tell a tale man ! Great oratory skills ! Add that Texas twang to the mix and you're fun to listen too. You could be an amazing salesman if you wanted. I'm getting this knife now. Dang... 🙂
One day in 1980, my commanding officer was tying a box with string and asked if someone had a knife to cut the extra string on the box. As a couple of the guys reached into their pockets, I reached behind my back and pulled out my issue KaBar, and was about to cut the string when Sgt Rock reached behind his back and pulled out a knife similar in size to your knife in this video. He barely touched the string and cut it with a pop! I vowed right then that nobody would ever pull out a bigger knife than me. For almost 50 years, I’ve managed to keep that vow. 👍🏼 lol I’ve carried bowies, and oversized knives for a long time now. I edc a Prather War Bowie these days. Although it’s kinda small, it works most of the time. And the best part of carrying a big knife is all the knife-envy it creates in all those around you. 😉
Thats awesome, have you done a review on the down under knives outback? I just recently found out about it and considered grabbin one. My favorite bowie i own is actually one that was hand made by a local fella. Its got a 10 inch blade if i remember right and probably close to half inch thick at the spine, has a coffin style handle with 8 brass pins runnin through it, full tang of course and has a really thick rugged leather shealth. Its one i like to carry from time to time at cookouts and other things with friends just for the wow affect of newcomers 😂 everyone loves the thing and always impressed with the heft.
@@411Outdoors that’s OK thank you. I don’t know what’s going on but now it’s not letting me pull it up. Got one and I love it! I've gotten quite proficient at throwing it, although I did crack the handle. My uber talented son made me a more durable handle. Way cool!
LOL funny that Aussielander accent! I have bought many Bowie's to try and satisfy my blade addiction, and some of these Pakistan made Bowie's are OK, but my addiction was satisfied when I finally bought a Muela Magnum Seraphim Falls Bowie. I will go as far to say it is the best Bowie money can buy, it's not too big or too small, even for this 6'4'' 300lbs giant. And keep working on that Aussie accent mate, although after me living down under for over the last 4 decades, an American accent still sounds way way better. It sounds bad enough when a bloke speaks, wait till some Shela opens her mouth on the first date and offers to cook you dinna, and brings out a microwave dinna with some cheap super market sauce thinking that will seal the deal for me to give up my single man life style, she was an ex bikini model, great ass, but when them lips moved and every second word was ''mate'', I dipped my smaller brain a few times but could not even think about getting serious with some one that sounds like she speaks cockatoo English, true story! But greetings from Aussieland, and if you ever come across that Seraphim Falls Bowie, snap it up, watch the film, it is truly a master piece, I have owned mine for a few years, and I could go on and on how freakin good it is, I have used it although would not throw it due to the cost and rarity of it, but if the CONVID zombie apocalypse breaks out, I would not hesitate to pick the one can do all Bowie, the Muela Magnum, and leave all my other blades behind.
