  • In Part 1 of this series on spurs, we are demonstrating spur use and discussing their parts and design.
    Spur Shank Length
General rule of thumb - the taller you are, the longer your spur shank length should be. The shorter your legs, the shorter your spur shank length.
    Shape of the Shank
This really comes down to personal preference. Some people like curved types, some people prefer something straight.
    Spur Use
For me, the spur is not used for forward movement or correction. I use my spurs for the ability to press more specific buttons on his ribcage, and to encourage collection. I also prefer to roll my spurs rather than jab them.
    Spur Rowels
In general, the bigger the rowel, the less severe it is, because pressure is distributed. Some rowels have pointed edges, and some have dull edges. I like to take spur rowels in my hands and squeeze them to see what they feel like. Even so, it all comes down to how you use the spurs to determine how aggressive they are going to be.
    Band Width
This also comes down to personal preference.
Be sure to join us for Part 2 of the spurs series. Until next time, may God bless the trails you ride!

Spurs are like guns, they shouldn't be in the hands of anyone who is not trained how to use them safely. Ken, great show!

A Horseman A Perfect word verses Cowboy

  • @kengenkuerickson1244

yeah and seems like it matters how big the horse is too, no? some of us can't afford different sets of spurs for different horses, though. same thing with fitting saddles. *sigh*. use what you got, but be aware of where your equipment fits and where it don't.

I don't use spurs but I find it weird that they're required in dressage even if you just wear fake ones. That seems like one of the dumbest rules ever 😝
