- The PS2 had a lot of great games. From mega successful franchises to the most niche of cult classics, you'd be hard pressed to not find something that tickled your fancy. That said, it was also the weakness console of the generation and struggled a bit as the 7th gen loomed. But then some madcap developers decided to see what this black box could really do.
Spartan Total Warrior is a amazing technical feat, but was it actually any good as a game? Let's find out!

Hey all! Hope you enjoyed. Probably the last I do like this. Next video will be a LOT more structured and hopefully better for it.
What is the name of the first game shown?
and btw great video i remember playing this game as a kid but couldnt remember what the name of the game was
@@mickey7245 That was trailer footage for Dynasty Warriors Origins
WTF I didn't know this game existed....!
@@ResidentGremlin1Following On With This Theme, Could you Do Shadow of Rome Next?!
@ probably not next as I already have a few videos cooking, but I'll definitely add it to the list.
Do I have some fond memories of this game.
I enjoyed how easily you can blend in with your Spartan brothers.
Running, fighting, and charging in with them together as an army always made me feel goosebumps.
Destroyed my dads save on this
I love that my spartan allies are actually competent, and not just named characters but also the regular spartans as well
I played this game so much I still hear "kill and kill again" in Ares' voice in my head when I play other games.
Let me tell you, seeing this video randomly hit me super hard with nostalgia. It makes me super happy to see this game covered. I remember when I was young, and it released, I didn’t have a memory card and kept my PlayStation 2 on for 2 weeks just to beat it. It got unplugged on one of the last missions and let me tell ya, early onset gaming rage was induced 😂. Good times man. Good video!
I had taken this game and my ps2 slimline on holiday once and forgot the memory card, was devastated when the holiday ended and I had to unplug it
ONE of the best games ever, this game and Space Marine 1 show RTS devs can do GOAT-tier action games.
comment of the day 💯
Just imagine if troy total war wouldve been this type of game and how much better that wouldve landed
It doesn’t play anything like total war so i doubt it would’ve been liked by the community. It’s better as it’s own game
_Warriors: Legends of Troy_ has that covered already
It would've landed even worse. Why the fuck would a Total War game be a third person hack and slash?
@@bubrub5564 Well, that's probably why he's speculating on a *Total Warrior* style game that's only tangentially connected
@@hanzlim7198 Only that game sucked major azz
Ahhh my all time favorite game. The only game I beat story-wise with each unique weapon (as the story allowed). Thanks for the memories man!
Great video! I'm surprised you didn't mention the arena mode, the bulk of which is unlocked via the side objectives you mentioned. This was the first 'hard' game I ever played to the point of mastering as a kid, I remember doing a no death run of the campaign and just grinding out the arena to see how high I could get. The gladiators were the toughest by far!
I remember unlocking as a kid the archers, sword and shield men and spearmen in the arena mode and always wondered what other soldiers I could unlock. Great game
Hearing Ares' sadistic laugh when the combo meter went up never failed to bring a cocky smirk to a young me. Also Athens' collectibles were hellishly hard to collect, especially in a certain mission in which you had to kill some... hostile agents? spies? I can't rightfully remember but I do remember the anxiety I felt while i tried to rip all the posters and open all the chests.
Man was this game a riot and a trip down the memory lane. Thank you for reminding me of much simpler times.
man this bring back memories, i remember playing this without a memory card when i was a kid, the furthest i got was at the beginning of the Legend status. Keep playing the game every weekend , never got bored even repeating the same mission over and over again.
Oh man that game still gets its hooks into me for time to time
I’d love to see a warhammer total warrior
I freaking LOVED this game. This brings me back.
I loved playing this game as a kid so seeing it pop up triggered alot of nostalgia. Great video man keep it up.
Criminally underrated channel! I never even heard of this game and watched this entire video. (The other videos are great too)
Fr
Trust Me Man You Will Want To Get This Game and Play if you can At All, It Will Be One Of The Best Times You Will Have Playing a Game.
As soon as you mentioned Talos marching, I got flashbacks to watching the stop motion movement of Talos from the 1963 film Jason and the Argonauts. Talos always creeped me out when I was a kid
Played this game as a child. Man, I've loved it all this time. Glad to see someone recognizes it and made a video.
This was such a chill watch to switch off, great video I subbed! Spartan is one of the best of all time for fun factor and a cult classic with so much charm just from its not perfect unique world. Top 3 games of my younger years no doubt and my favourite for a long time, I booted it up a few years ago gamecube edition on the wii and my housemates had a blast playing through it and we all had so many laughs at the sheer carnage. It still holds up great today. Also a shout out to Jeff Van Dyck, he masterminded a brilliant soundtrack capturing that ancient epicness with a modern twist which made the game, alongside doing the iconic Rome 1 and Medieval 2 soundtracks. He was a huge loss for CA.
He did piss in the water. This is a known Mandella effect.
I almost forgot about this game. I remember playing this on my uncle’s PS2 on vacation and would just play it hours on end.
Oh God this brings back memories. The charge alongside your countrymen in an almost apocalyptic Sparta while Medusa's beam fires down on both you and the Roman forces. Or the undead dragon. Or the undead armies being resurrected arround you.
This game was AWESOME. i loved how you could open the gate for reinforcements
Loved this game, still play it to this day from time to time.
Would really love to see a remake.
finally I've found that game which you played and forget the name of, but it left the memories on how the game give you fondness
thx mate
Holy shit you just unlocked a memory that id completely forgot about.
I saw the thumbnail and got so fucking happy to see Spartan: Total Warrior mentioned!
Dude, i replayed this game literally last week, and saw your video now. What a timing.
I remembered playing it from my childhood, and having lots of fun running around with other soldiers and stuff, but with newer eyes, it is REALLY technically impressive
On a PS2?
@@vincentquijano7657 no, emulator
I was in love with this game as a kid. The final boss gave me sooo much trouble.
Seeing this on my feeed makes me so happy.
Ive never seen someone talk about this game, which is weird because its so unique, and i love it religiously from playing as a kid, its up there with shadow of the colossus for my best games ive ever played.
I play through it every year at least once on a emulator, and to this day i still remember crying to the death of one of the close main characters, which i will not spoil.
If anyone is reading this and never had the luxury of playing through this, give it a try!
Good god, did you just unlock so many memories with this entry.
I used to replay this game for weeks. I cheesed mission 2 around the roman camp when you had to run back to the spartans by staying in the ditch and massacring all the troops before they reach the Spartan camp.
Thanks for the video, brought back the awesome times i had with thia game... If my memory does not fail me, blocking is huge (You should have used it more) and there is also counters, i remember the hammer being really good because of it's counter
Miss this game wish it made a comeback
Dude I remember when I first played this game first time as a kid on my cousin's PlayStation 2 before I even knew what total war games were and got instantly hooked. I wish there was a sequel so much, I love this game
This was my favorite child hood game. And sparked my interest in ancient history.
I still boot up the ps2 in 2025 just to try to beat the praetorian arena.
Now then this definitely cropped up of my love for total war and I absolutely loved Spartan Total warrior back in the day, would love to see an adaptation of the game if not a remake! Awesome vid dude you got my Sub 👍🔔
Loved this game growing up. Couldn't finish it as a kid though, thanks for the memories. ;)
The block on a god power is actually used as well in the fight against Marcus whenever he tries to petrify you
This game is what I considered a Musou game done right, because all of the other Musou/Warriors games ARE built to be power fantasies, but do not actually provide enough challenge outside of bossfights. Spartan: Total Warrior makes you into an excellent fighter with weaknesses and I love it, whereas the other Musou games make you into a demigod up to the bossfights.
28 years old, I grew up on PS2 and I’m just now hearing about this game? 13 year old me would go crazy over this game lmao
I constantly think about this game, almost nobody seems to remember this fantastic gem
Played Spartan so many times. Loved it thoroughly
Reminding me of my childhood with this one.
Spartant Total Warrior was one of my favourite games as a kid on xbox
Fighting the hydra was the best boss fight I have ever experienced.
[Core Memory Unlocked!!]
Oh wow!! I remember this!! I never owned a PS2 growing up but I remember my mom would allow me to have time to play this in Wal Mart!!
This was one of my favourite games, i remember trading this game to a friend after i finished it for a gameboy advance
I love this game not only does its fun to play but the change of scenery every two or three levels made what to see were i would hack and slash Romans next, also it got me into the total war series so now i can blame my 2000 hours in Rome 2 to this game. Overall great video i love that you touched in many more aspect's of this game unlike most reviews i see were they only talk about the gameplay and the story.
Yoooo happy to see one of my favourite games of all time being covered
This game is pretty much my childhood
Amazing game, got it when I saw an advertisment inside the booklet of Rome Total War, I couldn't believe it was made by the same developers. Sucks it got overshadowed by God of War since they both came out at the same time.
This game was the absolute bees knees! I remember when a friend at school showed me it one weekend then running home to beg the parents to buy it but they never did. Ended up renting it from my local video rental store so much they gave it to me eventually! Never managed to get past the praetorians
I am still playing this game to this day on my ps2 .. love replaying the Arena Mode ..
I love watching Allied Gigantes smash the Praetorians . The Gigantes is so strong . It can beat any unit 1vs 1 except Infernus.
omg i love this game i would buy an ps2 just for this
im 7 minuts in and i havent seen him break a single shield with the jump atack if he finished the game without the damn jump atack, respect
This game was awesome and it had a cool sequel with even bigger battles called Viking: Battle For Asgard
This game was fantastic, played this so much as a kid!
The amount of things you could do on the PS2 was awesome game shark the amount of games then PS3 came out which was a good system but then you had to get subscriptions and other things
I remember trying to save as many of my Spartan allies as possible and actually felt bad when they died. Lmao
I miss this game man, it was great.
This was my favourite game as a child
i love if you look at the healthbars at the top left when you fight a enemy you can see they have a name
"We will return with our shields or upon them! For Sparta, and for her dead! CHARGE!!!"
Brings back memories this game
Quite reminiscent of Rise and Fall: Civilizations at war
It's pretty funny that 2 hack and slash games set in Ancient Greece that have something to do with the God of War both released in 2005. I think CA could have had a franchise on their hands if God of War didn't come out, it did everything Spartan: Total Warrior did but better.
except the complete lack of epic army battles which is the main reason to play Spartan Total war
How does this only have 16 view? 😵💫🤯
This, shadow of rome and giants: citizens kabuto were my childhood
freakin loved this game so much as a kid.
I always loved total war and i wanted to actually be in the battle instead of commanding them and this game kinda filled that space.
Omg i loved this game so so so much. Who else used to try protect as many allied soldiers as you could
I also remember him pissing in the water. This cannot be the Mandela effect
If I remember right there was another game mode that was like a horde mode? And you would unlock new allies to fight by your side by progressing through the main storyline
I loved Spartan total warrior but I only saw it on the game cube, which led me to believe it was only on the game cube. I never got to play much as I didn't have one and i could only play when a store had it on their game consoles to test out.
I loved this game, I had a gamecube which meant I missed out on God of War, but this game totally scratched that itch. It was awesome and still holds up today. It is much more brutal though, unlike in god of war you really do need to know how to block and maneuver yourself around large groups of enemies. You have area-attacks which helps but those take time to charge. Additionally there is a certain level that has the WORST escort mission I have ever seen in a game.
I loved this game when I was a child, I have to replay it, I hope it runs well on a ps2 emulator
Just finished my 8 th playtrough on hard. I love this game for me it's a cult classic for ps2. Its addictive like DMC series.
Have this game for all systems available . Big fan of these types of games and was hurt we never got a second one ! This one and kingdom under fire series get shafted alot , ohhh and 99 nights . All same type game play and ahead of their times but never got the love they deserved outside of a small cult following.
Viking battle for Asgard was the next game on 7th gen PS3/360 gen
@connorbond86 completely forgot about that game also !!! I did own that , now I gotta watch a walkthrough lol
Never heard of this, but you can tell it was put together in the same engine as Rome Total War.
Great vid. Loved this game

In opinion,This weapon's magic was very useful at destroying entire legions of Romans in Troy mission
I remember when I got this game. It was a schoolnight and my brother and I played while trying not to wake up our parents. Very fun
I played this game so much back in the Xbox days, always hoped CA would make a "Total Warrior" series alonside the Total war IP, such a shame.
I can still hear "It's still too dangerous! You have to kill them all!" in my head... Did this game program me?
Played this game as a kid and loved it then played total war medieval 2 and loved it then found out this was made by same dudes blew my mind at the time
I love finding smaller channels that eill eventually explod
Your allies saying "a whole legion is here" when new waves of enemies showed up was always funny. A full-strength Roman Legion had 11,000 men (5,200 men if you're just counting the citizen legionary troops and not the auxiliaries) lol.
You deserve a sub for this so here you go
couldent agree more with you when i was a kid i finished this game on my ps2 thousand time its not only you like all these koei games your soldiers really matter on the battlefield everybody is fighting insanely good it actually feels like they are fighting along side u
funny enough is that ive replayed this game like 10 to 20 times and i dont remember that it was difficult because of the times I repeated it. it was unique unlike dynasty warrior where you could breeze enemies, you have to kill each one in this and it fely just right
I was just thinking about this game today after getting into dynasty warriors again
One of my favourite games of all time.
You play a spartan warrior, you face many mythological creatures such as the medusa, and the minotaur, you get multiple weapons such as a double blade called blades of athena, and the final boss is the god ares. Can you guess what game this is?
This game and it's lesser successor Viking: Battle for Asgard, are favourites of mine.
I loved this game. Hard at times but fair
Damn I wish Creative Assembly still make Total Warrior game
I used to play the shit out of the demo when i was a kid
This game needs to be re-mastered. Want to go back to the good old days of having fun, hack and slash and "KILL AND KILL AGAIN"
I loved the gamecube version a lot.
“MORE BLOOD I NEED MORE”
16:02 God I LOVED And Still Do Love This Game So Much Back From When i Played It in My Childhood, Even Taking Nostalgia Out of It But That Mission... I Think It Might Have Been The Longest I Took In That Game and The Amount of Raging i did Every Time That I Failed Because i Couldn't Be In 2 Places At Once And Those Fucking Gigantes! And Pretty Much Every Mission Protecting Those Goddamm Villagers or Something of Them Was Like That But Not as Bad.
Facts! I LOVED this game!
