I definitely would recommend this model for daily use if you want to own a classic BMW without breaking the bank. It is fun to drive, economical, easy to maintain and reliable for BMW standards due to its simplicity. Repairs and spare parts can be on the expensive side, but that applies to most of the German car brands.
If you are looking to buy one, watch out for oil and coolant leaks as well as rust.

Yes, it is the M43B19 as 2000 is the last model year of the E36 generation.

Is there a big difference in driving between 1.6 and 1.9?

I have not driven the 1.6, but I don't think there are any major differences between the two apart from the 1.9 having more torque.
