So SO many of the best discers don't even know what their own body is doing. I'm not hating. You don't need to explain it to do it. That's why coaches exist. Somebody has to do the thinking and training of others. Great advice and great delivery. Athletic movements are nearly universal. Kids today don't know bout Bo Jackson. But Bo knows... 😂
Bo knows! Yes I figured it out by applying basketball principles. I don’t shoot or dribble with the palm. It’s certainly universal. Thanks for watching!
Except if you threw a baseball from the Palm you would lose 95% power, not 5%. Better 'discers' like Paul Ulibarri or Scott Stokely recommend setting the rim in the crease of the Palm for a consistent release angle. Since disc golf is primarily a Target orientated game, I would put a higher premium on Accuracy. Of course Nothing is for _everyone._ I think it's safe to assume that a _majority_ of people should follow what the _majority_ of the top 20 disc golfers in the world are doing. The free market has already decided what works best for most people.

73 year old addict here. I go to local parks twice a day every day. I just got back from trying this grip. Wow, an average of 20 feet farther. I did not change my current style, just the grip. At first I pulled them to the right but when focusing on the line of my throw (point the elbow) straighter and longer thanks. No if if I can only do this when surrounded by trees!
I watched this video one time doing my best to copy the grip change. Felt very foreign to what I had been doing for 10+ years then played the following day and was crushing it off the tee and everywhere else. Have watched dozens of videos about generating snap to no avail. Simply awesome, the disc left my hand nose down and with more effortless speed I could not believe it. Got to places on the course that I have never been from the tee. Thank you
I just had wrist surgery and lost more than half of my range of motion. I lost a good 75 feet in distance, and am struggling to get close to 300' again. Your in and out video gave me an extra 50' before the surgery. At this point, I'm kinda depressed, and I'm desperate to get more distance. I'll give this a try. Thanks!

@joeydupont7664 I hear you, but I'm on a mission to adapt and regain my distance. I will never be happy just putting around. It's has affected my putting as well, so it's field work for me. Thanks for the encouragement!
@joeydupont7664 You're correct, distance isn't everything, accuracy trumps distance. But to be somewhat competitive you really have to at least be able to throw around 350' to be able to have a standing chance of getting close to the basket in 2 throws on linger courses. Technical courses, courses where the basket is ni farther than 300' or so, you can get away with nor having a ton of distance on your throws. This is coming from someone who can't throw 300'. I've gotten so much better on my putting and approach shots but I don't have a fighting chance of hitting par on any hole over 500'.
very much a beginner...started father's day when me son's got me discs and a basket. I struggled to throw 200. My max was 225, once. I switched from Stokley's palm grip to your grip and then next two sessions I threw over 300. Birdied a 350 hole that I struggled to get to in 4 in the past. Plan to purchase your course when I know I have time to go through it.
Crazy I was just talking to a local who can consistently hit 500' with a max of 600', he grips the same way. Ive been having some serious griplock and early release issues with my mids, just tried this and now the disc is releasing cleanly with a ton more power, easily getting over 220' with minimal effort around my small yard, can't wait to try this at my local course on a full rip. Thinking I'll be able to hit 300'
This is the exact grip I use. I found it using a radar gun and later a TechDisc. Most people grip with their "fist." I call this gripping with your fingers. It keeps your wrist loose and adds an inch or so to your "whip" length. I get 2-3 more mph with this grip.
Your grip tutorial really helped me get that extra snap that I was missing! Previously I was holding the disk deeper in my palm.. This little change in grip did the trick for me and it finally clicked for me.. Thanks, love your videos
Been trying all sorts of grips for the past 1.5 years now. But I also finally learned to plant my brace foot first just recently and oh boy... you really can feel those hips lock with explosion at the end. Was able to get my 9 speed fairway out 400 thanks to you! Now I'll be trying this grip out and see if I can bomb it 400+ consistently.
This tip imediately increased my distance 60-70feet, you will get more spin and a nice and better slingshot effect. Important to have a proper reach back, and keep the disk close to the pocket pulling it through - and it will end with a nice snap and good spin!
Thank you for sharing this. This is what i was missing. This will be my final grip. i just started but i would always fiddle and change my grip because there is a lot of different style and information according to the other videos on you tube. i felt like i was gripping/doing it wrong. I say this because i started with this style grip on one of my first throw and i bombed it. impressed one of my friend who's been playing for years. Like you said, everyone is different and find your own comfortable grip. Thanks again for this tid bit.
100% my grip, would also suggest looser grip provided greater wrist mobility for increased spin and snap (squeeze the disc hard and check how mobile your wrist is). Great post and comments on core strength, mobility, and body mechanics!
If your disc leaves your hand going 70 MPH, it had to accelerate to that speed from zero in the total distance from your reachback to release, (6-7 feet). Your body has to generate a specific amount of NET energy to perform this acceleration, it comes from the combined output of your legs, torso, back and arm muscles, (probably mostly abs and back). This requires 2.38 pounds-force for a 170 gram disc. The longer your arms (Anthony Barela) the more leverage you have to create that force. The stronger your torso (Garret Gurthie) the more core strength you have to create that force. Since you can't grow longer arms, the best way to gain big distance (once your form is moderately good) is Standing Bar Twists, Decline Situp Twists, and weighted stair climbing.
So everybody is always like get it deep in the palm, but I've just been messing with my grip and that limits the wrist action. Granted it makes it very easy to get the nose angle right, but it makes it hard to snap. Same with a fan grip. I simply went from middle finger on the rim to index finger on the rim for forehand last year and went from zero to very good with control and distance just because I can hinge my wrist one way and not the other. I have been trying to figure out how to get over 300 feet forever and it's not a power problem. I train for strength and explosiveness and if I hit first available there's a loud bang and a cloud of pine bark dust. It disc goes where it's going fast, but not far. I think it's a lack of spin problem. This has me confident enough to start working on what I've been staring at holding the disc and moving my hand around with different grips even though it's "wrong."
I found my snap-grip when i reverse rolled the disc from my fingertips in to my palm. I also only use 3 fingers. It works great. Now im gonna try focusing on my back leg and the weight shift you talked about in your other video. Thanks!
@@markhumphrey8894 hold the disk with both hands on opposite sides using ur fingertips (no thumbs) then roll the disc into your palm. best I can explain. I find that it sits much tightser on the tips instead of trying to fit it in the palm first. you kan feel power. gl!
My grip is traah I need to try this. I have a bad habit of letting go before releasing. I was always told to put it in my palm so it will be interesting to try this out
I did this grip before, its nice when you get that good shot, feels more powerful but its harder to control the nose angle and i got lots of wrist rolls
I think this method actually gives you better nose angle control since the disc is a tad higher in your hand. Wrist rolls might be true though because of the same thing.
I couldn't never get the nose angle down with a 3 or 4 finger power grip i think its just my large palms and weird palm crease shape but i started using the bonopane grip and it works great for me to get nose down and and i get some snap out of it. This might help me with a normal 3-4 finger power grip since it takes the disc out of my unusual palm crease shape.
I'll try this next time but it feels like my pinky can't get a strong grip, and if it does, the disc gets pulled deeper into the part of the palm yours is 'grazing'. Also, another way to possible describe getting into this grip could be: start with the normal middle-crease of your palm alignment, then bump the ball of the palm from below the edge of the disc to above it and then don't grip so hard that it is pulled tight into the palm.
I found this grip a few months ago myself and have noticed way more consistency, consistent nose angle, and snap with this grip. McBeth uses the same grip.
it worked for me but i couldnt replicate it for my midrange and i like to keep same grip for max distance even if using different disc and i can throw about 420ft sometimes around 450ft on a low ceiling flat shot in no wind.. if really nice tailwind can get a bit more out of it so im happy with my modified fan grip like Lizotte
Nice video. I do a similar thing but with only 3 fingers (idk it just feels better for me). I'm working on the off hand motion but it messes with me mentally so bad that its hard to practice cause my throw goes to shit. Appreciate the content as always mate.
I have never placed the disc in my palm, it doesn't feel natural. I have always gripped it with my fingers first to get a natural feel and then dropped my thumb where I need it for the shot.
This is my current grip and I can preform fine on the course, but the Techdisc tells me otherwise. Between that and my local coach, he throws 1300 RPM with no "snap". I grip like this and throw 900 RPM with "snap" I honestly think the snap is our disc hitting our fingers.
This seems counterproductive to the “your index finger creates a pinch point for the disc to translate linear momentum to spin” with all 4 fingers contacting the disc. I guess I’ll have to use my own science experiments to test it out
Just gotta figure out something. Cant seem to get up to 300'. Too tired from my job to actually do field work. Quit my job to practice more? Dammit man youre right, ill put my notice in today. But will for sure try this before sunset and i go practice, finally.
@@slingshotdiscgolf1897 that’s been my thinking as well. My hands are mid size and it feels more slippery . Prior to trying this I use a modified fan pinch
Before today I would rate myself between beginner and intermediate, 300' max golf shot, 350' max field distance shot, playing for ~13 months. Here's how my practice round went: Hole 1, neutral 9 speed, ripped it hyzerflip into a headwind, instead of hyzer, big miss, but 305' on a 315, still par. Hole 3, I noticed I was throwing 15 degrees right, so I started doing an angled walk up and straight throw(like with the sticks), instead of a straight walk up and stepping out on the brace. I did this for the rest of the round as it was the first time it felt good to start from off the side of the teepad. Neutral to stable fairway: the first time I've throw this disc and it went straight, bombed it as far as a straight 9 speed. Neutral 9 speed, good distance shot. Understable to stable 13 speed, I got this disc just for skips, this was my first full flight of it ever. Hole 4, 3 good flights, but all over the place because of wind(all still par-able). Hole 5, My best hyzerflip of my flippy Valkyrie ever, 320' into a 15' gap for an easy upshot on a par 4(I've birdied this hole once before, with a similar but shorter shot). Hole 7, sent my fairway on a straight flight OB over the path. I expected about 75' of a stable turn, which never came. Hole 10, early release due to low grip pressure. My neutral 9 speed still turned more than flat, very weird to have an early release and have the disc go 200'. Hole 12, Normally my play is mid - mid - putt because it's a wooded 300', from now on I'm saying goodbye to the bushes and going for the 300' shot(C1, blocked by branches). Hole 16, Hyzerflip on the 13 speed into a headwind. This one felt really good because the headwind on this hole normally tears up my 9 speeds, not a max distance throw, but the placement was the best I've ever had. Hole 17, a wooded 315'. My best shot ever here was a flat release with my neutral 9 speed, turning it over and back to the basket. This is a 20% shot for me, requiring a good tailwind to push me to the basket. I threw both the left gap with my 9 speed, and the hyzerflip gap with my 13 speed (not into a headwind this time). I had to go back and rethrow to make sure, my first throw was 10' and the other 3 were inside 40'. 4/4 throws on a 20% shot. Hole 18, a medium width fairway, 330', 3/4 shots were roughly as good as my best throw previously, 1 went into the trees. Normally with my 9 speeds I'm about 55% on throwing a shot with a good result. Today I had 2 bad shots, one early release(still a par), and one into the trees (probably a grip problem, but who knows). That's about 50 drives with only one shot costing me a point. On the way home I realized i had not one issue with nose angle. This is not normal. In one day I went from throwing for distance with drivers and using mids for when I need control, to throwing drivers with control. In one day I can throw a 13 speed for a full flight. TLDR; With this grip, it feels like my hand is locked to the disc. With the Stokely/everyone else power grip the disc feels loose in my hand, I can wobble it all over with my other hand, it feels similar to the stability my forehand grip gives. I believe with this grip I have had perfect nose angle(as far as I can tell), which only the Bonapane grip has given me in the past. This makes sense to me because I can go back and forth between this grip and Bonapane and my hand/wrist/disc angles are very similar This grip has allowed me to throw 6,7,9,13 speeds and get a perfect flight for the distances I'm throwing. I believe this grip has given me about 10kph/5mph more speed only based on the changes to how my discs fly (as if I had 10kph more headwind than I did), with additional rpm's to match. In one day I changed from being a beginner(in my mind) to throwing a shot(4 out of 4 times in a row) that only 1000+ rated players were able to throw in the A tier last weekend(and only 50% of them did) This was the last piece of the puzzle falling into place.
About 10 more days of throwing, I don't think this grip really gives much more distance, it seems to allow an 80-90% throw with much more consistency however, throwing an almost full power golf shot is much more consistent. Maybe 20 feet more max distance. Grip on 6 speeds is not great, 7 speed + no problem. Any nose angle problems have gone away and not returned. The big difference is the locked in feeling the grip gives, I believe this gives a noticeable improvement to spin rate. I'm throwing somewhere around ~880 rated (about 14 strokes down from where I started the year) and this is the last piece of the puzzle for me, it's down to fine improvements now. I've also used this methodology for my forehand grip, using the same piece of hand meat to grip the bottom edge of the wing. I can get an audible snap with my forehand this way(from the disc ripping off my hand, not a finger or thumb snap).
I have a hard time getting a solid grip on my disc ever since I started baking sourdough bread for my goldendoodle. I have to use vaseline to lube up the dutch oven and I can never get it off my hands. Super slippery . What would you recommend for this circumstance? Thanks so much for your Special Talents and Advisories
I like to cook using bacon grease which helps with my disc grip. Adds a really nice scent to my disc as well. Which in turn, attracts a lot of stray dogs to the disc golf course

This is how I naturally gripped the disc since I started in 2012
im 6' 5" with big ol hands. I do this naturally because it feels like i have too much finger curl under the disc.
So you do not throw with only your shoulder?
Tried this grip by accident the other day and went from 290 to between 365 to 400 ft in a matter of days this grip works.
I have never placed the disc in my palm, it doesn't feel natural. I have always gripped it with my fingers first to get a natural feel and then dropped my thumb where I need it for the shot.
💯
This is my current grip and I can preform fine on the course, but the Techdisc tells me otherwise. Between that and my local coach, he throws 1300 RPM with no "snap". I grip like this and throw 900 RPM with "snap"
I honestly think the snap is our disc hitting our fingers.
I tried this grip early on and for me it had no control. I was throwing all over the place with zero accuracy. Maybe I’ll revisit it again.
This seems counterproductive to the “your index finger creates a pinch point for the disc to translate linear momentum to spin” with all 4 fingers contacting the disc. I guess I’ll have to use my own science experiments to test it out
Old man here, I previously said 20' I meant to say 20 steps farther. 20 steps X 2.4' per step =48' farther. I will throw again today.
Just gotta figure out something. Cant seem to get up to 300'. Too tired from my job to actually do field work. Quit my job to practice more? Dammit man youre right, ill put my notice in today.
But will for sure try this before sunset and i go practice, finally.
Thought I was the only one who gripped this way.
Do you use this for mids and putters ?
Depends on the distance with mid ranges. I use a fan grip out of the palm. I will have a video on it soon enough
@@slingshotdiscgolf1897 that’s been my thinking as well. My hands are mid size and it feels more slippery . Prior to trying this I use a modified fan pinch
Any suggestions for a grip with arthritic hands?
No clue. Sorry your dealing with that.
@@slingshotdiscgolf1897 No worries. Thanks. It’s not gonna stop me from playing the sport I love!
no power in the arm. this is the ultimate statement: generate power from legs, core, and shoulders!
Before today I would rate myself between beginner and intermediate, 300' max golf shot, 350' max field distance shot, playing for ~13 months.
Here's how my practice round went:
Hole 1, neutral 9 speed, ripped it hyzerflip into a headwind, instead of hyzer, big miss, but 305' on a 315, still par.
TLDR;
With this grip, it feels like my hand is locked to the disc.
This makes sense to me because I can go back and forth between this grip and Bonapane and my hand/wrist/disc angles are very similar
This grip has allowed me to throw 6,7,9,13 speeds and get a perfect flight for the distances I'm throwing.
I believe this grip has given me about 10kph/5mph more speed only based on the changes to how my discs fly (as if I had 10kph more headwind than I did), with additional rpm's to match.
In one day I changed from being a beginner(in my mind) to throwing a shot(4 out of 4 times in a row) that only 1000+ rated players were able to throw in the A tier last weekend(and only 50% of them did)
This was the last piece of the puzzle falling into place.
That grip looks like you have zero control where this disc is gonna fly
Good for an open field rip . But you aren’t getting any accuracy with that .
It doesn’t seem to effect my accuracy but everyone is different
Snap has never equaled distance.
Hey... people who are as old as dirt NEED grip gimmicks! LOL.
Grip is everything. I went from 100 feet to 500 feet just by switching from a 1 finger grip to a 5 finger
Hahahahahahaha
I have a hard time getting a solid grip on my disc ever since I started baking sourdough bread for my goldendoodle. I have to use vaseline to lube up the dutch oven and I can never get it off my hands. Super slippery . What would you recommend for this circumstance? Thanks so much for your Special Talents and Advisories
Oh man. I have the EXACT same problem!
Vaseline is toxic in the oven gross
I like to cook using bacon grease which helps with my disc grip. Adds a really nice scent to my disc as well. Which in turn, attracts a lot of stray dogs to the disc golf course
I would buy a bacon scented disc
Pretty sure Alden Harris did a video where they loobed up their discs
