@@Mayla03 your parents seem like great people. I have not had much luck with “northern folks”, but it’s easy to tell your P’s are awesome folks. I’m jelouse too, would love to run into the Hanks at a campground. I say campground specifically because I would not bother them anywhere else.

I had a 2015 Denali HD and the DEF was annoying. Traded that in during Covid for a Canyon but now back to towing with a 2023 Sierra with the “DuraMini” and the DEF is sooooo much easier. Also, the 3L diesel has been great.
They fixed that and the DEF is next to the fuel now. Owned 5 Rams, one Ford and 2025 GMC Sierra 2500 Denali is first GM product I have owned since 1995 with a Suburban. So far, like the truck, but the tech is actually better on the Ram then the Ford's right now and GM is 2nd. Especially on the 1/2 tons, GM tech is light years ahead and auto drive is even better than Tesla.
When you spill the Def you should rinse it off. It is corrosive to some metals. Maybe keep a gallon of water with to rinse the area after filling. Your Def tank is about 2 1/2 gal
Hi Guys, thanks for the video. Just a little FYI most grocery stores will steam lobsters free of charge and probably for half the price of a restaurant. We took advantage of this when camping in the Bar Harbor area.
We have a 2017 Chevrolet 3500 SWD with the Duramax and you are absolutely right about the fill for the Def fluid not being a good idea! we always fill our DEF fluid at truck stops at the pump as we don't have to worry about getting outdated fluid, we usually try to go into the truck stops at low traffic times and we approach the pump from the exit, and come in from the exit putting the DEF pump next to the right side, we go inside to give the fuel desk a heads up to our intentions and have yet to have a problem and it makes it a lot easier for us. Our maintainace schedule for our pickup is Mobile 1 full synthetic oil, oil filter every 5,000 miles and at every 10,000 miles we do the fuel filter, external trans filter and tire rotation. Just saying. We have followed you guys for years and really enjoyed your content. Thanks
My husband always reminds me to not go over and talk to other campers until they are all settled in and hooked up. Because many travel with pets(us too) and we need to get them out of the truck. There's plenty of time for conversations when they are done.
ADVICE!! Hey guys! It's Dan again... I have a tip about your door handles. YES DOOR HANDLES. At time mark 14:20 you were pulling on the handle while it was locked. If by chance you are pulling the handle at the exact same time it's being unlocked, the handle can BREAK! So be patient and wait until the unlocking is complete to avoid a broken door component/handle. Love you guys! DanC
Using satellite and street views are a must since we started RV-ing earlier this year. Our 32’ bumper pull with a 22’ truck can bring on pucker moments with some entry and exits so it always pays to look ahead 👍
FYI L. L. Bean main location & home is in Freeport Maine. If you get a chance it would be worth checking out 5 floors of outdoor clothing & gear. Travel well stay safe
3:33 One reason for putting the DEF fill under the hood is that there’s no chance you’ll put DEF in the fuel tank. I was a Ford service advisor and we had a couple Super Duty trucks get towed in with DEF in the fuel system. Very, very bad news.
I'm not on the road full time yet, watching your videos to get inspiration and learn things. I have a friend who lives in Ellsworth and has a camp on Green Lake just outside Ellsworth, I usually get to stay for a few days whenever I'm in Maine. It was so strange watching and knowing exactly where you were, I just drove there few months ago! Keep up the good work, I love your videos.
We have had so many people tell us that they wish that they had been with us when we met you that afternoon! Michelle and I have been anxiously awaiting this video! I hope that our fellow Mainers treated you nicely and that the visit was everything you were hoping for! Happy Camping!
You're right about the PA roads being rough. My family and I live in PA, and every time we leave the state and come back, we joke around that you can have your eyes closed and know that you entered PA.
You guys are the best . I’am from Maine and loved watching all the places that I’ve been to. We camp every year at Searsport ⛺️ Campground. It’s by the ocean beautiful place. Have fun and we’ve watching you for sure. Safe travels.
If you would like to know the DEF level you could always get a Banks Idash monitor for your truck. It tells you other parameters as well. ECT, EOT, EGT Temps, REGEN STATUS, plus has a built in OBD monitor. Check em out. I love mine.
Ahh the Newport ME Irving. For anyone taking exit 157 heading towards Moosehead lake, there is another irving in Corinna that is generally pretty empty with a 3 pump big rig area. We stayed at this campground the last week in August - our last campground of our 2 month trip. Sooo Nice. We also stayed in 2003 when we were here when our children were young. We were so glad to see it still here. Nice Campground, Nice people.
I agree with your take on the roads. The worst road I was on here in PA is I-81 North from Harrisburg to I-80. I live here in PA and I avoid that section of I-81.
As a person who considers the Lancaster area in PA my hometown, I have to reluctantly agree with your assessment of the roads in PA. I've lived in Western PA and Eastern PA and the roads are all the same.
@happilyeverhanks I would recommend getting a Edge CTS3. We have one on our Duramax and it gives us two benefits: it displays the DEF level in % and shows what gear the transmission is in. If you have the L5P engine, then your DEF capacity is 7 Gal.
Great video. We just drove the 89A in Arizona today. The road surface is fine but very rough and lots of humps; it felt like a rollercoaster at times! The drive from Saint George, Utah to Phoenix, Arizona was beautiful even with all the twisty turns, hills and bumpy roads.
6:11 I track all my truck maintenance, fuel costs and what not in an Excel Spreadsheet. Notebook works for quick notes while on a trip, then I transfer it to the spreadsheet later on.
Same. And if you don't know it already, when it reads half tank it will take a full box 2.5g. And when you get the warning it's like it will take 2 full boxes (5gallon).
I Used to do a little panic when i approached a gas station to fill up. A few times I was trying to figure out if I could get in and out while I was on the move, or worry that I was in someone's way or holding them up - big mistake. Now, I slow right down and don't worry about someone else, and look at which pump I want and then if I have to wait for it a few minutes, that's okay. I've made so many mistake, and continue to make mistakes. You guys are great, travel safe.
We've been following you all for years, and this new England trip has me so excited for our full timing journey that will start on Monday! We couldn't wait for you to get to Acadia. I have the same thing with my 2018 Silverado 3500HD for the DEF. Tried once like you and couldn’t do it so I gave up. Glad you showed us in this episode! Don’t need to take so many boxes of DEF anymore!
I am sorry to hear about the DEF challenges in the GMC. I also use Open Roads and have found you may select Diesel and DEF when you log in with your card. You do not need to do two transactions. Thanks for sharing your RV life!! You are informative and keep it real! Have a safe trip.
That is such a beautiful place and what a blessing to find a local to help out with getting into the tire shop. Looking forward to seeing some of area next week.
I hauled heavy equipment, oversize and overweight. I used google street view and satellite view always when checking my route. It was always nice to see how wide intersections are and obstacles while planning a delivery or pickup. A lot of times doing that I had to change the route because of an intersection I would not be able to make the corner. Love your videos.
this is why I never ever want a diesel. Of course, I dont have a reason to need a diesel. Thanks Hanks, I enjoyed seeing you do that today. Love you guys.
When it gets low enough,it will show a percentage..what else you wanna know about the Duramax/Allison??!! I'm ate up with with these engines and transmissions!!
@HappilyEverHanks So, in order to be informed about everything happening with your engine, why not get something like a Banks Idash? It will tell you exactly how much DEF you have and tell you when you are having a regen cycle. I installed one myself, it was super quick and only took a few minutes to hook it up and have it telling me everything I could ever want to know about my engine on my GMC.
Had a flat on our camper on I 70 in Kansas. Put the spare on, drove for an hour or so til we got to Discount Tire. I decided to change all the tires and they did, right in the parking lot. Easy peasy as you like to say. Love you guys.
We have a 2019 dodge. Our def is an inch away from our diesel. Last winter, my partner poured an entire box of def into our diesel tank. Thank god we got it towed and didn’t try to start it!
I have a 24 New gmc sierra with baby duramax. Def inlet is right next to the gas inlet and shows level like a gageon the main screen when scrolling through.
I fully agree that DEF filler is in just about the worst place possible. I just heard from a truck driver friend of mine that Rislone is making an additive for DEF that will keep it from crystalizing. Might be worth checking out. Keep the good stuff coming guys.
Been to this area and love seeing it again through your eyes. Enjoy it. LL Bean and many other outlets is in Freeport, not Portland. Hit it on your way south. Great looking campground. I will have to check it out.
Being from Oklahoma, we thought we have the WORST roads. We just finished a 30 day fifth wheel trip to Niagara Falls, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Pennsylvania, Virginia then home. Chasing Fall Foliage was an awesome trip. Have to say the roads in Indiana are far worse than Oklahoma. We were on Western side of Maine so roads were ok there. Vermont had the best roads we drove. Love y’alls adventures and was SO hoping we would just run into ya. Safe travels!!
Yeah, Oklahoma ranks right up there for bad roads. We drove through Eastern OK on US 75 and US 69, and it was rough! You'd think with all the money they get from oil and gas, they could at least rent some pavement mills and smooth those highways out a little! But then again, Eastern Iowa and Central Wisconsin were rough, too. Haven't tried Indiana yet. Think we'll pass on that experience.
Your DEF tank is 7 gallons. When the DEF tank gets low the dash will say you can go 200 till you need some. It's actually at 1000 miles left in the tank when you get the notice. Remember If towing you will use more. When fuel consumption is up so is DEF. Your truck will control the amount of speed you can go if DEF is ever that low. I believe it let you go 65 MPH for 75 miles then 45 MPH for 75 miles then 4 MPH for 75 miles. Just don't run out. But if ever it says low you have 200 miles to get some. I believe most likely there's some within 200 miles wherever you're at. The owner's manual says you have 1000 miles to get some if you see a notice. (but what do they know....LOL). If your worried, carry a jug in that over loaded RV... lol Thanks for the good videos.
I always angle my truck towards the def pump , it leaves me just enough room to slide out the driver side door, this ensures that the def nozzle reaches the def tank fill , then I turn the wheel slightly to the right and pull up for the diesel tank.👍🏽
You two got so lucky by missing fall crowds! I did one better in 1979 hiking the Appalachian Trail through Maine. 10 days without seeing another person in the woods. Really enjoyed the video. Thanks Hanks.
If the truck stop is slow like that one just pull in backwards. Alot of international semis had the def on passenger side also. That way its one transaction. Start the diesel main pump, the one you pay at just set the nozzle on the ground and fill the diesel with the "slave" pump the one on the passenger side without the display. When finished hang both up and start the def. I had to do this for about 3 years that i had that truck.
I have the 2019 GMC 3500 with my DEF tank in the exact same location as yours. I found out early on that trying to pull the hose over the front of the truck by myself scratches my fender on the driver side. After a little discussion with some truckers, I now pull in backwards. I get my diesel first then I turn around and go in the pump station from the exit side. To get my DEF. Even with my trailer, I’ve only had one event where a trucker blocked me in. I have used mainly truck stop DEF . I find it much cheaper , fresher, and more convenient. Yes, going in the fuel aisle backwards is a pain and I get a few looks every once in a while until the truckers come over and say oh what a damn bad design that was. Good luck in your travels.
If you google your year make and model of your truck it will tell you exactly all the information you need about your DEF information. It tells you how much your DEF holds and gallons. It tells you how to reset the gauge on your speedometer instrument panel and it tells you how long until you have to fill it back up again. It tells you all that information now I tried to copy this information off of Google And paste it in a comment, but it wouldn’t let me do it so I’m just letting you know there is a way you can track it on your instrument panel cluster where the gauges are for the speedometer and you know RPMs and I hope this helps you guys have safe travels
Drove right by the KOA we stayed at July 4th 2022 and 2023. Yes its expensive, but the free Bar Harbor trolley picks you up there so it is convenient. Pros and cons. Also drove by ConvenientMD Urgent Care in Ellsworth which is nice. Not worth visiting unless you absolutely have to...😂😂😬😬🙋
When you go back to Maine you should add Orono to your list, it is a really nice little town, great food and little shops to window shop. We have been there a few times and enjoyed it. I hope you got to Owl's Head State park.
Suggestion. It’s an expense… Diesel Legend Gale Banks makes a device called the Banks I-Dash. Of the MANY diesel and vehicle parameters that it can monitor through your OBDII port DEF level is one I can display on my truck. Banks shows the tank level in Percentage form rather than GMC/GM silly Bar gauge. Take a look for vehicle compatability.
We camped not too far from there earlier this year. Totally enjoyed Maine and want to go back. We did what we could after my hubby slipped and fell while hiking in NH fracturing his wrist and then an infected abrasion. We spent some time getting to know the urgent care facilities!! We were amazed you could get a lobster roll at Panera Bread!!
Love you guys and your content!Ever thought of deleting your guy's truck? Better performance, better fuel economy, no risk of clogged dpf, increased engine longevity, and No more Def🤷♂️👍
My inlaws retired to Steuben 30 years ago (The US 1a edge of Acadia.) and I have driven all over that area. I found myself screaming at the TV, "Turn. TURN!" 😀 I hate the cold (I live in NC.), but I fell absolutely and totally in love with Acadia the first time I ever went there. We go all the time now.
5:10 My 2017 Chevy Colorado with the baby Duramax has the same useless DEF level indicator. It says OK until the level drops below 20%. I added a Banks iDash monitor and have it set to display DEF level as one of the monitored parameters, but it it similar in function. it maxes out at 40%. It does that because the monitor level in that era of trucks wasn't very detailed (resolution wise) if that makes sense. In other words, it's a DUMB monitor level in the DEF tank.
I have the 2018 High Country model of your truck. Your def guage will say ok untill you hit 30% in the tank and than it will start to count down by percentages. On mine once im at 30% i can fit two 10L (3 Gallons) jugs in without overflowing. Hope that helps
We stayed at Hadley's Point a couple of years ago - I think one site to your passenger side. We were there in early-mid October and I booked maybe a week ahead of time. Beautiful area, fun bus ride into Bar Harbor, where I had the most expensive glass of wine ever at that cut hotel / courtyard place a bit SE of the park. So fun!
I love that entire area. My sister has a house in Bar Harbor and I love to visit her there in the summer. Haven't been in four years because of our workamping gigs but I am promising myself that I will go in summer of 2025. Enjoy, have fun and yes, Thurstons is great. So is Beal's.
Bar harbor is awesome. Maine is awesome. Tourism is there number 1 money maker. We celebrated 4th of July at Bar Harbor this year. Everyone is super nice. Don’t forget to try the Blueberry pie it’s fabulous. Made with Blueberries that are grown everywhere there.
How crazy We have been following your journey for years and love your content. We were staying at Hadley's Point with our Solitude 310 the last week of September and first week of October. The week before that we were at Schoodic Woods. I think we walked the dogs past your rig a few times!
We stayed at the same place last October, it was really nice until a storm came in with 50+ mph winds but everything was fine. Ba Harbor is a great place but the park can get a little crowded.
If you had it side by side you could put your DEF in your diesel tank or vice-versa. I've had both your arrangement(2016 Chev. 2500) and the newer GM system(2023 Chev. 2500). The newer is easier but there are folks who have put the wrong fluid in the hole. Less likely to put diesel under the hood.
One of my fav campgrounds in bar harbor. Great pricing, great people, awesome campground. They are amazing hosts. Hope you had a chance to visit the winery across the street while you were there.
Hi Carl, that koa that you passed in bar harbor was where we stayed a year ago. They are higher in price but we were backed up to a beautiful view of the harbor and they also had an area in the center of the campground where lobster rolls. It’s beautiful there in Maine.
You sure met some nice Rvers there. and you got great local Info. This is the BEST thing about RVing . Nice People. Nayna, you really found a great campground. Love you guys
Great to see you touring Maine. I live towards the Moosehead region and happy to call it home. Looking forward to RVlife in my near future to explore the West. Learned a lot from your shared experiences here on YT. Keep the good vibes going!
The triangle in Newport confuses many people not familiar with it. The Shell across the street has a truck pump that is oull through with a wide swing area behind the building and is often wide open.
We have 2018 GMC. We always fill up DEF at station with Open Roads. The first time I had to ask the truck driver behind me to back up. Fast learning experience to fill it first. Safe travels
Weard. I have the brother to yours (silverado version) 2018 and i have a 7 gallon DEF tank. Also. Im STILL GLAD the DEF is under the hood. I have seen SO MANY people wonder whst to do becauae rhey werent careful and they put def in diesel or dieael in the def becauae the tank fillers are right next to each other. I NEVER have to worry about the type of .mistake.
We have a 2017 F350 Ford. The DEF info is the same, tells us ok, half and below half. Really not good. But our fill is next the the diesel fill is. Makes it easy to fill.
The north east maybe beautiful this time of year but give me Northern Minnesota any day. I live in Southern Minnesota and my sister lives up north so I get up there often. It's beautiful and what's even better, no traffic and good wide roads!. If you haven't been here you need to come.

I am sorry to hear about the DEF challenges in the GMC. I also use Open Roads and have found you may select Diesel and DEF when you log in with your card. You do not need to do two transactions. Thanks for sharing your RV life!! You are informative and keep it real! Have a safe trip.
The newer GMC have the DEF by the Diesel tank fill now. Not sure when it started but at least 2020
The 2020 GMC AT4 3500 mine has the def beside the desal cap. Also has a gage on the instrument panel.
Love your videos.
that is a great idea to fill the def. Mine is in an odd location currently too
this is why I never ever want a diesel. Of course, I dont have a reason to need a diesel. Thanks Hanks, I enjoyed seeing you do that today. Love you guys.
You guys should get GARMIN GPS for RV , you can put your height in settings and never worry about hitting any low bridges. Good luck 👍
When it gets low enough,it will show a percentage..what else you wanna know about the Duramax/Allison??!! I'm ate up with with these engines and transmissions!!
So ours will never show a percentage, it will just say "DEF low"
@HappilyEverHanks So, in order to be informed about everything happening with your engine, why not get something like a Banks Idash? It will tell you exactly how much DEF you have and tell you when you are having a regen cycle. I installed one myself, it was super quick and only took a few minutes to hook it up and have it telling me everything I could ever want to know about my engine on my GMC.
That def tank holds 7 gallons
That first place you went to was Newport, Maine. I just moved a bit south of there after living just north of there.
Had a flat on our camper on I 70 in Kansas. Put the spare on, drove for an hour or so til we got to Discount Tire. I decided to change all the tires and they did, right in the parking lot. Easy peasy as you like to say. Love you guys.
OMG! Click and drag so I can see the layout of the area I'm heading too. MIND BLOWN!! Thank you Hanks!!!😊
Great video. Can't wait to actually see Bar Harbor. 🙂
We have a 2019 dodge. Our def is an inch away from our diesel. Last winter, my partner poured an entire box of def into our diesel tank. Thank god we got it towed and didn’t try to start it!
😳😲😵💫
Great video thanks for letting us tag along. There was some beautiful sights as you drove along stay safe and happy travels.
On our trips out East, hwy 70 in Indiana was the worst we encountered all the way from Missouri to Maine !
If your worried, carry a jug in that over loaded RV... lol
Thanks for the good videos.
I always angle my truck towards the def pump , it leaves me just enough room to slide out the driver side door, this ensures that the def nozzle reaches the def tank fill , then I turn the wheel slightly to the right and pull up for the diesel tank.👍🏽
Hi Hanks’! Welcome to where i shop! I know exactly where you started your video, i know that town well. Enjoy my state, it is beautiful.
My ram def in right next to the fuel cap don't have to open the hood ❤
What a crazy place in your truck for DEF. We had a 2014 F350 and our DEF tank was next to our fuel tank .
Great episode!
Love you guys and your content!Ever thought of deleting your guy's truck? Better performance, better fuel economy, no risk of clogged dpf, increased engine longevity, and No more Def🤷♂️👍
Did you add a tune to it after you deleted the def? I hear you can add 50hp-150hp.
Deleting was the best thing I ever did to my 2015 GMC . Fuel mileage increased by 2.5 mpg , towing . Now the oil stays clean .
I’m number one!!!
You are awesome for being here!
Great video. We wilk make it to Maine someday, we hope anyway. Be safe from WV
Google satellite maps for the win...even a couple decades ago I would look ahead so I knew what to expect at my fuel stops and destination
Great trick with the DEF, we will try this next time! Great video with awesome information. Thanks for sharing and safe travels!
We have 2018 GMC. We always fill up DEF at station with Open Roads. The first time I had to ask the truck driver behind me to back up. Fast learning experience to fill it first. Safe travels
With our ford we have a 7 gallon DEF tank. I learned the gauge is use based not level based.
Such sweet people
We have a 2017 F350 Ford. The DEF info is the same, tells us ok, half and below half. Really not good. But our fill is next the the diesel fill is. Makes it easy to fill.
We stayed at Hadley Point Campground back in the summer of 2020. Was nice back then but looks wonderful now! Acadia is beautiful.
The north east maybe beautiful this time of year but give me Northern Minnesota any day. I live in Southern Minnesota and my sister lives up north so I get up there often. It's beautiful and what's even better, no traffic and good wide roads!. If you haven't been here you need to come.
We stayed at the Bar Harbor KOA two yrs ago. Worth the price. We were right on the water.
