Another enjoyable wander. The radio site at Somerton was some of the transmitters for Portishead Radio, which communicated with ships at sea all over the world by HF (high frequency). The operators and receiving aerials were at Highbridge and the morse code transmitters were at Portishead. It's a long time now since I was a ship's 'sparkie' and I have forgotten what the Somerton site was for, probably the ship to shore telephone channels.

I know, it is a weird one, isn't it. Clearly it is a beautiful and friendly town, with so much history, but it seems to off the tourist trail, unlike Wells or Glastonbury. A true hidden gem! Take care, Paul.

I grew up in Somerton during the 50s and 60s. The viewing point is the viaduct crossing over the Cary river which you never saw. Behind Berry used to be called Behind Town. My late Father and Uncle had thatched barns further down the road. It is now called The Thatch. A small group of homes.
Thank you! It is strange that Somerton now has a lower profile in the County, but it was once the County Town of Somerset and gave it its name. Sadly, I only had a short time to film this and I wasn't able to film other parts of the town on this occasion. It seems a lovely town and one I would imagine that would be pleasant to grow up in.
