It was pretty obvious based on Bokeh. I liked the Fuji images more however. Better colors imo. I'm on a transition from Sony and Canon full frame to Fuji. Fujifilm is such a joy to shoot with.

This lens takes Fuji to another level. It was hard to tell unless you really looked at the dynamic range. Again the Fuji has harder time with specular highlight but this is because of the crop sensor. Very common. Have to say they both performed excellent. Fuji did amazing here. Sometimes better with skin which is most important to me. Way around Specula highlight issues is to underexposed drop and bring it up in post.

Really good comparison video. I got about 90% right. Towards the last half it became clear what the differences where, so was getting them all right towards the end. I was slightly preferring the Fuji. The warmer skin tones where a little more flattering, with slightly more punch. The slight difference in background compression also started to become a give away it terms of what lens was being used.

Wow, Fujifilm consistently coming out on top again! Crazy! That slightly better contrast and truer more saturated green dress and black dress look so nice. The release of the X-H2 which will probably have crazy AF is really going to make FF vs. APSc discussions extra spicy going forward.

I've tried to identify by bokeh first but was not right all the time. The difference in bokeh is smaller than expected and in some scenes, Fuji actually had smoother bokeh rendering. In general, Canon is very neutral in terms of color, while Fuji can be sometimes neutral, sometimes too warm, and sometimes too magenta (although it often looks very good). I think the color is most often the biggest differentiator. There is quite a big difference in dynamic range too. And Canon seems to be a bit more flare-resistant.

Fuji skin tones, soft and dreamy sunshine, much more atmosphere within the image. I think the Fuji is better for this subject, definitely.
For say, technology product or automotive marketing images, the clinical surgical harshness of the Canon would be ace.

The Fuji has nervous bokeh in high contrast foliage scenes and it's highlights are more flat. Canon and in your Sigma 85 dg dn video, both are much smoother. The transitions the FF lenses are more gradual when layering. Very nice comparisons.

So this one was a bit more challenging than your Sony A7 IV vs Fuji comparison. I think to my eye it was because of better default color science in the Canon. Ever Since the Canon 1D (yes I'm old school) Canon has a tendency towards the look of the old Fuji Astria film and it shows here too. The Fuji pics here appear as if defaulting to a Velvia look, though I'm guess these are raw in either case. I'm currently looking at replacing my MFT systems, and teh more I watch the more likely I will find myself in Fuji land.

I got 4 photos wrong. Precisely the photos in which the XF 50mm f1 showed a more blurred background. But I confess that I had to keep hunting for the details. On a daily basis, everything is very much the same. I would prefer the full frame version because of the high ISO for night photos without flash. Now, the X-T4 + XF 56mm f1.2 W set would justify being smaller and lighter than an R6 + RF 85mm f1.2.

@@caliallstaring I am thinking about purchasing upcoming X-S20, how is Fuji camera performs indoors in lower light conditions? I constantly worry about it and don't want to be embarrassed by the next guy with the cell phone camera. By the way, your video is great, side by side comparisons are the best.
I am amateur hybrid shooter of family events and narrowed down to Canon R8 and Fuji X-S20. Many people are raving about Canon skin tones, but after watching few videos, I am not impressed.
I am looking for good low light performance and nice skin tones, please help me decide. My camera now is Sony RX100 v. It seems to me that new Canon cameras are over sharpened with digital look. Especially, the grass looks much different than Fuji. Am I correct, or these things can be adjusted in camera. x-t30ii or x-s10 have the same sensor as the X-T4. Either available at about $1k new. A used 56mm f1.2 if AF doesn't matter or a 56 Sigma if AF does matter will run ~ $500 in at $1500. The Viltrox 56 will run $300 and get you most of the way even cheaper.

For me it was very easy to pick out the Fuji. The Fuji is a nice lens but it does not have the compression of a longer lens. 50mm is OK in a pinch but 85mm gives more pleasing bokeh and compression. You can always adjust colors for preference in post processing if you need to.

I think there are a few pictures where you got the two mixed up. In those pictures you had labeled the more compressed background as Fuji. Since the Canon was 85mm and the Fuji was 56mm, the Canon should always have the more compressed background by virtue of it being the more telephoto lens. There is no way that a 56mm lens would bring the background closer than a 85mm lens. Even tho the field of view of the Fuji is approximately 85mm, it is still only 56mm cropped in and not a true 85mm.

  • @ZhiJien

In my humble opinion, an 85mm should be compared against another 85mm because of that depth compression on the background, you can easily tell which is the 50mm and which is the 85mm just from the background compression itself (85mm is more compressed, which means background may appear a little closer and bigger), so I think it would be good if you can use an 85mm or similar and stand further away from the subject? Haha

Pretty obvious just by Fuji saturating colours more, even when you ignore the obvious bokeh differences. Would be interesting to know which is actually more accurate... Also some times the Fuji wasn't getting the skin tone as great. Blowing out some skin highlights, and maybe slightly less detail in the hair. The difference is obvious, but not that big.
