    LOVE the fact that you've included a floor plan - I'm an architect and that sort of thing is, of course, right up my alley!

      same here. the one thing i would change would be to NOT have a bathroom immediately accessible to the dining room. a toilet visible from the dinner table is most unattractive.

    Beautiful! I see why they were more comfortable living here than in any of their marble palaces!

    I first saw pictures of the Rockefeller cottage on Jekyll Island when my parents visited the Island in 1978. It was in unrestored condition then. I couldn’t get enough of this and other amazing cottages from this era on Jekyll and my wife and I have visited many times since the late 80’s and 90’s. Amazing history and beautifully restored homes. The last time we visited Jekyll the Rockefeller cottage was not fully restored so we never got a chance to view the interior so thank you for providing some shots of the interior. Can’t wait to go back again and see it in person!

    What a beautiful house. If I ever win the lottery (which I won't) I would build a house like this with modern interiors. I love this style.

    If I just saw a picture of this house, "Rockefeller" would not have been a name to pop into mind. It looks like the home of a well off local merchant (mid-sized city, small department store owner). It's very nice and not overwhelming or "intimidating". I love it! 👍😊👍

    Viewed through our present-day lens, given the house's style and size, it's a discordant notion that it was considered "rustic." That being said, I admit the lack of electricity (and other contemporary utilities) did fit that word's definition. The house is a beauty. As someone who could never afford the undertaking, I'm thankful that it has been lovingly maintained and restored.

    I think a home like this is way more beautiful than their grand large homes with all the lavish and ornate details. I a ABSOLUTELY an old home with huge porches and detailed wood work.

    the wrap around porches down south were planned for more then looks, it allowed people to keep the windows open in the summer even in a rain storm to keep cross breezes to stay cooler in the sweltering heat. Born in Fla. I can understand that. You can see people in old photos wearing suits and long dresses, it must have been miserable in the heat, even with linen cloth and 100% cotton clothing

    • @therewillbecatswithgwenhwyfar
      @therewillbecatswithgwenhwyfar 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Linen was also used and it has a superior wicking ability but I agree… I could probably have lived in early 18th/20th century clothing someplace cold. I would not survive in Georgia in the summer.

      @@therewillbecatswithgwenhwyfar I grew up in Fla. in the 60's with no a/c. now with all the high rise buildings along the coast that weren't there back then, you don't get the gulf breeze we at least had back then

    I was able to visit this house and Jekell Island..alas in the heat of summer; but it was beautiful nonetheless.
    A little known fact. Emily Post, the expert on etiquette (herself a member of high society at the time) wrote a book called The Personality of a House, where she pushed for Colonial Revival and simplicity over the ostentation of the Guilded Age. The photo illustrations look a bit frumpy by today's standards, but the shift in taste was revolutionary nonetheless. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in American architecture and taste of the period, although copies are expensive and hard to come by.

      No, but the Rockefellers’ owned a house called Hyde Park. I believe they named it after the famous Hyde Park in England.
