oh man thank you for this video!!!! I train soon on a 13/18 speed and watched another video on 13 speed and thought it may as well have been in Chinese to me. I think the fact you're actually driving the tractor makes it easier to learn. I've saved this video and will keep watching until I feel comfortable getting behind the wheel. Thank you again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not a pro driver. But I have driven them. I always looked at the 13 as 4 speeds stacked. Like the VW Beetle I had then. Within minutes of getting out of the rig, I was speed shifting the trans. The 72 Ford Explorer - 302 column shift was a bit to get it right. 79 Diesel Golf - 4 speed. Dodge 225 slant 6 - 5 speed. Ford 4.9L 5 speed. 5 VW Jetta's. I was very lucky to have a driver willing to take me along, and I got to see many problems that 4 wheels created. To this day - I watch traffic - and allow trucks to move around me, as needed. I pick my spots - so the rig has the advantage - to roll past me , and once the rig is passing - I brake - so the rig has a short time beside me. I always flash my high beams - to let the rig move quickly in front of me. I wish you all safe roads. Cheers!
Wow, finally i was able to understand, thank you so much, i learned with a eaton fuller 10 speed and it was so confusing for the 13 speed, but now i get it great video, short and straight to the point 👍👍👍👍👍
Ohh man I’m doing this course in school right now it’s so confusing, there telling me to match rpm for the next gear and split this and shift here and I’m like omg what am I in for lol It’s a heavy equipment course and the excavator and loader are 10 times easier then the dump trucks
The problem with instructors is teaching the gears is they tend to belittle for not understanding the proccess you while your doing it which makes you have a harder time. This instructor doesn't even mention Engine speed and rpms lol
My T680 with 400HP ISX has a 10 speed and with heavier loads up hills I wish I had a gear between 9 & 10. If I have to drop from 10 to 9, I'm going to be down at or below 40mph when I crest the hill.
I had a 10 speed for my training and testing, I didn't like it, 5 and 6 are too far apart. 13 is easier, for me at least, to shift. Also we have a 13, so i was use to that.
I just picked up a truck with a 13 conversion and for the life of me it doesn’t split the high range gears on the up shift without grinding and a lot of feathering in the throttle. I know this is t normal. For instance- if I’m in 5h and upshifting to 6l it grinds. Not sure if it’s a Paccar thing or not, but I notice the rpm’s drop ridiculously fast when I get into neutral for the shift which is why I’ve got to throttle. Any idea what the issue could be?
It is cheaper to spec. for day cab truck fleet owners, less shifting for the driver, and it gets better fuel mileage on level roads. One driver, Trucker Josh ( a TH-cam vlogger) in Canada, was averaging 10 MPG on a twin screw, 10 speed, company truck with a load. But the downside was it would not power up a grade and bog with less ratios to choose from.
@@MegaGeorge1948 yeah ever since I’ve been running a lot of open bore tankers with a 10 speed its a total beast to get up a steep grade especially an on ramp onto the interstate. Downshifting coming down a heavy grade is just as bad.

I love my 13 speed. I’ve driven them all. This is the perfect combination for OTR.
Takes me back the days of the cassette tapes, flip phones and Hawaiian shirts.
I love my flip phone. But I just use it to order pizza. 😁

Watched multiple vids and you made it so simple I really appreciate it
You are welcome!
I agree 100%! Other video wasn't in a moving truck and for me that made that video hard to figure out.

As an OTR driver who runs Conestoga I love my 18 speed, that shakes and sounds like my old international 9200 or 9400.
With Conestoga do you just strap the load down and the Conestoga acts as a simulated dryvan?
@@thisismagacountry1318 yes, it opens from front to back or back to front. And is the easiest way to tarp, without throwing a tarp.
@@wayneblue5370 Cool, I'm 62 and want that oilfield pipe money from Houston to Midland/Odessa, but tarping is not for me.

13 and 18 are similar to the 8LL. same shift pattern minus the splitting gears.

Thanks man that helped i thought there were actually 13 different shifting positions
13 speed is the best in my opinion.
Helps out a whole lot.. thank you..

Great video. At what speed do you downshift? For example in a 10 speed you can downshift to 9th between 40-45, 8th between 30-35 etc.
I just watch the rpm and down shift right when's it at 10
Keep up the good videos. 🚛 💨
Explained it the best out of all videos
My 13sp in my Western Star, I split the lower gears then flip to the high gears.

It’s probably been about 10 years since I’ve driven a 13 speed, it’s mostly been 10 speeds.
My favorite was a 9 speed over with the pattern on 3rd and 4th reversed.
Thats what I was thinking. Never heard scratching gears when I was floating my super 10.
Good video and simple thanks

So do you not need to use the side splitter? I’ve heard people say that they just use it as a 10 speed, only using that back splitter??
The spread on the rpm gap would be double on the final 4 without the side splitter. Just like skip shifting.
That would be a great video how to only use 9 gears on a 13
Good video, thanks ...
God bless you!
Do you let go of accelerator when you pre select to 6 lo going from high 5?
You always let go of the accelerator peddle when dropping into neutral before the next gear. This takes the load off.
Hey Ryan do you work on Detroit motors? Got a DD15
Thanks bro

Make sure air line for the splitter is hooked up.
Nice view.
I'm a 10 speed man I must say my loads are never heavy so if I had heavier loads I could see me going to a 13

A good driver uses the clutch .. you need to use it so you don't wear off the transmission ..it's also a manufactured recommendation
But experienced drivers know how to do it the right way without clutch
Wrong
It's called floating gears
This is good and youre becoming a teacher as you should but if you can just slow down your speaking a bit. Harder to follow when youre speaking faste.
I drive 13 speed I spilt all gear ⚙️
Why drive a auto when you can have this
As an Owner/Operator it will last much longer than an automatic and swapping out a new clutch doesn't cost an insane price.

A poor explanation is when there is no explanation, that is this video.
Should always double clutch. He was scratching gears. All that is wear and tear on the transmission and the rear end. Grinding gears is not good
how to do what .. you didnt teach a dam thing about shiftng , thansk for nothing
I drove a 9 and 10. Wanna learn 13 tho.
