Muay Thai Technique - Basic Punches

  • Muay Thai is referred to as the "Art of Eight Limbs" because it makes use of punches, kicks, elbows and knee strikes, thus using eight "points of contact". Two of those points are the focus of today's installment in our Muay Technique series. Kru Vivek demonstrates the proper form for the four basic punches -- jab, cross, hook, and uppercut. If you're a beginner, be sure to watch our previous video on The Fighting Stance. It will help you set a good foundation to throw effective punches.

JnM I would say there’s more so a difference in each Art’s stance. Boxers perform with a more narrow stature (less surface area exposed) while Muy Thai fighters are more linear with all limbs kind of facing forward to either block or perform kicks on your opponent.

I like the production value. It oculd be improved if the punches hit with the first two knuckles, the elbow didn't flare out, the elbow was behind the fist on the hook, and if the upper cut did't drop before it was thrown. Also, you'd get a lot more poer if you bent your front knee as you strike -- in the video you extend your front leg as you twist and punch. Keep worling hard, man!

@@firstname3352 that attitude is what's wrong with a vocal minority of previously bullied MA students. You think that constructive criticism is an adversarial proposition. So you get all triggered like you're being bullied as you out yourself into someone else's identity. Grown ups don't solve confrontations with fists; and they don't mistake opinions and criticism for confrontation. Grow up.

While that is a combo, the numbers seem wrong to me as far Muay Thai punches... 4 should be a right hook not an uppercut, uppercut is 5 & 6.
    1: jab
    2: cross
    3: hook (lead hand)
    4: hook (back hand)
    5: uppercut (lead)
    6: uppercut (back)
    7: body (lead)
    8: body (back)
    9: overhand (lead)
    10: overhand (back)
