City housing project FAILED leaving dozens of homes in DISREPAIR

- As I was driving down the street, there there a ton of boarded up houses but this one on the corner was getting overgrown. So, I spoke with the neighbor right behind and she told me that it is a city owned property. There was a housing project that lost its funding and failed and now there are dozens of boarded up houses on this street. She said the city does cut the grass every now and again but they haven’t been by yet this year. So, I thought I would get it edged up, mowed down, and looking amazing for the neighborhood again!

I don't think I'm allergic to ivy/oak cuz i have lots of it in my backyard and i dance around in that and don't have any issues but i also take a shower immediately after just to be....safe.
@@emnewb641 lol, yeah, sometimes I wish I could be his backup cause I have basically no reaction to poison ivy, but ironically, I’m very allergic to grass and can’t do 90% of what he does lol. I can shovel dirt though, so I’d be willing to help him out with his edging.

It’s a shame there are so many boarded up houses when people are crying out for accommodation. Amazes me how there are so many in USA, here in Australia we have a rental housing problem, rents are very high and there just aren’t enough affordable houses. It is absolutely tragic! So many people living out of their cars or in tent cities when there are houses available.
Unfortunately a lot of corporations buy up a lot of homes here as well and they rent them out instead of letting actually families who need them buy those homes
I wonder that too! How did a city housing project fail? Where I live, people would be fixing those up and glad to have them! ❤. Building new housing projects these days is crazy expensive because so many middlemen come along with their hands out, wanting a cut of the government money. Fixing those up should be more reasonable I would hope.
I am in Canada and we only see vacant houses when they are getting through probate or are going to be torn down. In my city there were to four unit buildings that were rented, it was a slum lord, city came in dozed both buildings and built a 30 unit building for low income, we also have a bunch of town homes that are a mix of owned and low income suites.
I live in the Northeast USA. In Massachusetts, we have a mandate to provide 10% of our housing inventory to be affordable housing. LOTS of building going on here. If TX lost funding for all those homes, why not sell them???? Geez, that would never happen here...I think.
Too bad the city doesn’t sell them for a reasonable price to lower income families if they can not afford the housing project they wanted to do. It’s so bad for houses to sit empty. So sad. But you made this house look worthy of a loving family. Thanks for all you do.

My husband too! He now mows the grass next door for a handicapped neighbor and recently washed the mold off a new widow neighbor’s home exterior. If he sees a need, he just does it. Proud!
It's too bad, when the city drops the ball on a lot of these properties, that you can't be reimbursed for doing their job. I know you do these jobs for the benefit of the neighborhood. You have a big heart.

I agree, last year I had hip replacement surgery and had to hire out my lawn work, just mediocre. So this year I am happily doing it my self, am 73 and glad to still be able, no one like Spencer around here.

It's beyond belief that so many houses are empty and so many Americans are homeless. Why can't these houses be repaired and affordable?🤔🙄😡
Also the rent is outrageous for most people to afford to live, especially those on social security…

Because what these people view as affordable isn’t actually affordable.
Someone has to pay for repairs, for one thing. And then the house is worth money, which means the people buying it have to be smart enough with their money to save for a down payment and keep up with the mortgage. Not to mention the legal issues that many houses get tied up in.
Plus, much of the homeless population has severe mental illness and/or addiction problems. They don’t want a home, or wouldn’t be able to maintain it if they did.
You can argue about prices and all that. But things cost money and the world is very complex.
What you should do is buy a rental, then go out a find yourself a homeless person or family to move in. Show us how's it's done.

It does seem strange that the city will issue code violation to property owners for letting their property go like this. Yet they will let city owned property go to pot.

Always great job! You must sharpen that shovel daily ! I admit I sometimes fast forward through the shovel work I am recovering from back surgery and it hurts just to watch it . Take of yourself I’m 68 woman who has mowed , hauled large rocks and such when I was younger doing own landscaping . Love the weed whipping and mowing the best .

As much as I like you and your videos, I still prefer to see the help going to occupied homes. There are so many people who are elderly or incapacitated for one reason or another. You always put your heart into all your projects and I really appreciate that.
But if he does the worst of the worst homes it makes the whole community out and prevents a lot of crime, squatters, wild animals, mosquitos etc
He takes them as he finds them. It's not as easy as you might think to find homes with wildly overgrown yards that have the potential to make good videos that people can complain about.
He would have to go house to house to find the elderly and incapacitated. It is not a viable plan. He has his business to run too. Your heart is in the right place but not a feasible plan.
My fav part of these videos are the before and after photos at the end! From looking unloved and hopeless to loved and full of hope. Makes my eyes water 😢💦

The powers that be also keep saying there is a housing shortage. Seems there are too many regulations for them to actually work with what is already there. Such a shame because everything is so over priced.

@@donnamitchell7707 That's unbelievable and way overpriced. When I got out of the USAF back in Jan., 65, a fellow Airman who also had been discharged and I rented a two bedroom apt for $35 PM and this was in overpriced Calif. There's no reason for rents to have gone up that much other than greed.

My husband made a joke about your brothers looking just like you and I told him you guys were identical triplets, you only see one because the other two were lazy. They were "Un MOW tivated". You need to really careful around the power line to the house. Even with no meter base that power line is live.
Spencer I think to be more safe when doing the street edging wear a reflective vest so you don't get hit.

I starting watching, the boring channel with Kevin then I found Al Blaze then SD mowing then everyone else. Other then the sound of the equipment that I enjoy, what hits me more if them helping People out. The faces on people faces. When we were going thru so much and family and friends came to help us out with our yard, it has brought us tears of joy! It was refreshing. We had to leave out for some medical and you can imagine someone just coming and helping you with your yard makes a big difference. So I admire these guys and the rest of people trying to make a difference in people lives.. blessings boys are another one, I watch so different from Australia good job Australia. As always, Spencer, great job! It's a pity that if several of those homes are a failed City project, then why doesn't the City maintain the yards of the vacant homes for the neighbors who still live there and back up to these properties? Those neighbors deserve better from the City.
Spencer, I'm allergic poison ivy too, and for the most part I do my absolute best to avoid it at all costs! But the few times I've come in contact with it, I've been able to avoid issues by following this guideline: basically, using any soap, thoroughly wash & rinse the affected areas at least 3x with warm - not hot - water. (I dot his with my clothes too.) The last time I got poison ivy was in 2015, after doing some spring weeding at my new house, but after using this technique, I was able to go back into those flower beds and pull up poison ivy sprouts and roots and I didn't get a single itchy spot. I havent had any issues with poison ivy since! Good luck!
Spencer, dab alittle apple cider vinegar on your rash and it will be dried up within 3 to 4 days. Love your videos and the great service you do for the community!
Tea tree oil! It works overnight for poison oak, it should work for poison ivy as well!😊
You are doing well, reviving this area being forgotten. You brought back a sense of a well-cared-for home and then even found a completely lost sidewalk, and restored it. Like that you raised a street tree and opened the view to the surrounding area.

I've noticed that recently they mostly do abandoned properties, perhaps because of liability or something? Or just more bang for the buck visually for the videos.
He seems to only do abandon property..doing free for a person hits different than doing it for himself..and free pressure washing is only done in a certain demographic as well

Don’t understand why you would pick another abandoned house when you could have helped an actual person with theirs. You do amazing work, way too many people out there that really need help with their yards that with your skills you could make beautiful again.

For one reason there are no standards needed on abandoned houses, secondly, one abandoned house per week makes more money from u-tube than a weeks worth of paying customer houses.

There's no liability with a vacant house.
That was a lot of turf to scrape off the concrete. It was the most difficult part for me when we came home from a 10 day vacation.

Can't please everyone, plus the one overgrown yard that he does improves the whole neighborhood helping multiple people. Not to mention he did say at the end of the video if you watch the whole thing he was going back and doing more work. And he does this for free and only does it once a week for TH-cam content. Not to mention this lady was not really that pleasant.

I’m glad you left the poison ivy alone! My mom was weeding not knowing it was poison ivy and it got in her lungs! She was in the hospital for a week. Take care out there.
Should have offered to mow that womans yard after she gave you information about the boarded up houses. It's a little upsetting to a person, hearing you do it for free, for the other houses. But don't offer it to the person who just offered to pay you for the service.

What a tease! Lady thinks you are coming to help her, but instead you are asking about city property 😆I would have much rather helped the lady, than the city. It's nice that you do this, but you usually seem to do it with houses nobody actually lives in. The lady's lawn looked like it needed help as well, and I am sure the lady would have been more appreciative than the city.
