- Biology Professor (Twitter: @DrWhitneyHolden) describes the 5 classifications of bacteria based on oxygen preferences, including obligate aerobes, facultative anaerobes, obligate anaerobes, aerotolerant anaerobes, and microaerophiles. Examples are given of each class of bacteria, including several human pathogens, and the video also includes a discussion of why some bacteria can tolerate oxygen and some can't (Hint: superoxide dismutase, catalase, and peroxidae!) Great for MCAT Biology Review! For more information on how bacteria can be classified by temperature preferences, see Biology Professor's video: • Bacteria Temperature P...
Oh my god look how neat and color-coded her writing and drawings are and how she gave examples of each type of bacteria for real life application learning. This is what a true professor is.

I just wanted to say this was really helpful!! The method used to explain (the vials and distribution of bacteria) was a brilliant way of being visual and clear about the differences. The examples are also very pertinent- I'm currently studying for a Medical Microbiology exam and this really helped to solidify the connection between oxygen usage and pathogenic location. Thank you so much, excellent video :)
Thank you so much for making these videos! You completely translated everything my professor was trying to teach us into something easily understood. You're an amazing teacher.
I'm glad it was helpful! I have a lot of other microbiology videos at this playlist: tinyurl.com/BioProfMicro
Check it out!
wow. I FINALLY get it. THANK YOU FOR MAKING IT EASY TO UNDERSTAND! I wish you were my
professor
I can't believe I only just found you! You are very good at talking and content is perfectly relevant to what I am learning! Thanks!
I have a ton of playlists you might enjoy - check them out :)
Thank you!! I've been searching for an hour for a video to help me understand this. You cleared it up in under 15 minutes!

She’s so pretty and gives the best mini lectures ever! I hope she never stops posting
this video really made my work more understandable,,, thank you so much!
Thank you Dr. Holden for the great lecture !
I believe you ought to make more emphasis on the role of NITRATE molecule as a final proton & electron acceptor in the respiratory chains of different classes of anaerobes ; where it gets reduced to NITRITE !
For example : In case of urinary tract infections (UTI) caused by a variety of Gram -ve bacteria like E.coli , Klebsiella , Pseudomonas , Proteus , ........etc , detection of NITRITE molecules in urine is a strong indictor of UTI !
You clearly mentioned in the lecture that E.coli - a major causative agent of UTI in humans - is a FACULTATIVE ANAEROBE , where it's the capacity to reduce NITRATE to NITRITE through its alternative anaerobic respiratory chain !
Thank you for making this video. I have a hard time understanding things in class and even when I voice record lectures I still struggle. Seeing videos like yours are a big help.
hyy can we talk
thank you so much it made my days because I was having difficulties understanding what they actually were
Very informative. Loved the examples and corresponding pictures drawn. Great video!
Very well explained. I know it’s an old video but I just wish it was in a better audio quality

Thank you! Thank you! I have a test this week and I am so glad I found your video. You gave a clear and easy explanation with a simple diagram of SOD compared to my teacher.
I'm glad I could help! If you have a test coming up over this subject, you might want to review bacterial classification by shape and bacteria temperature requirements - you can find both and a lot more in my Microbiology playlist, found here: th-cam.com/video/Xxw-JWDOiYQ/w-d-xo.html

You are a wonderful professor. Top of the range. Two suggestions: First, can you group your video based on topic? All microbiology videos should be in one "folder" for example. Secondly, to make money, can you sell your summarised notes?
I have 17 playlists, all including videos on a related topic. Here is my microbiology playlist - th-cam.com/play/PLjMo-ys5HQIZomKdqEKCgYSevvdgQyT8x.html
Unfortunately, I don't have summarized notes to sell...I guess it is all just in my head. :)
your explanations are amazing !
Thank you very much!
I'm so glad I found you now. thank you for making this video
I think you were my TA in Microbiology at Vandy. Kudos to you ma'am!
Yes, Sabrin. I remember you too. Thanks!
I wish you were my professor. You’re really good at what you do. Thank you 😘
WOW!! you have done such a great job explaining in such simple non complex English. Thanks!!
I have signed in just to thanks you
The way you have explained it was too simple and easy to understand
Love you
amazing explanation
Your explanation is very clear. Thank you so much!
Hi, thanks for this! it would be interesting to have some examples of beneficial bacteria alongside the more disease causing ones. thanks
Awesome. Thank you.keep it up!
Yes! You made it make sense!

Thanks for this.
Hello doctor, please explain to me the genome cracking method
thanks for making it clear
Thank you for posting this.
I have a question...In my micro class we discussed the different classifications of bacteria based on oxygen preferences.
we were told that if we inoculate an anaerobe and an aerobe into separate tubes of nutrient broth, the aerobe grows well, but the anaerobe wont be able to grow unless anaerobic conditions are established. This made sense to me completely, however we were then told that if the two microorganisms were inoculated together, they would both grow. I do not understand how that is possible. Are you able to explain that concept further at all?
No, I'm sorry. This does not make any sense to me. Perhaps ask your professor to explain, then come back and tell me what he or she said.
That was also a question posed in my micro class. I am not sure of this answer however if you place both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria in an aerobic environment, could the aerobic bacteria detoxify the oxygen so that both types of bacteria are able to survive? Again, this is only speculation so please correct me if I am wrong.
thanks very much, appreciate it,, almost like u supplied exactly what my teacher needs and extras!! :)

excellent
Thank you so so much!!!! it was really hepful!!! your explanation about bacteria it was easy and smooth!!!!.
so interesting. never heard of microaerophiles before :D I also like how every environmental niche is occupied by them bacteria.
Thank very much ... It is greatly appreciated effort. .. It helps me a lot .. 👍
thank you
I owe you for this ❤
Helpful helpful helpful love love love
Thank you so much!!
You're welcome!
Thanks, clarified things so well!!!!!!
Thanks ❤️❤️❤️👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
hii Biology professor,
I want to culture my own Phototropic prokaryotes to create a better environment for my garden and animal husbandry.
can you do a video about this ? very very very much appreciated if you help.
thank you
andrew
I'm not really sure what you mean. Like the use of spirulina (phototrophic eukaryote) for animal feed? Or cyanobacteria in aquaculture? I'm not an expert in these particular things...
i would like to culture Phototropic prokaryotes . it is good for ag usage.
I really don't know whether my headset is disturbing or the actual volume is less🤔🤔.
Actual volume is less
It’s an old video, from before I had a microphone.

Thank you! my textbook wasn't doing me justice.
Thanks
Çok teşekkürler
Thank you! very helpful :)
Seriously, I would rather pay her than Pearson any day.
Lol - thanks! :)
Only question that remains is: how she reached the top of the blackboard?
I think I stood on a chair ;)
Genius
Thank you very much. :)
Peroxidase doesn't produce O2 though, only catalase does...
Can't hear you u need TO were a Mic. That's to bad that was an interesting topic.
Audio was low
Sorry. Turn up your computer audio. Then it sounds fine.
Oh ,that's OK hun, just wanted to let u know some people only have phones to use listening to your speech. So I was thinking u could use a Mic, That's all. Great video!!!!!
Okay, thanks. I actually started using a mic in November. So later videos have better sound. :)
Awesome girl keep up the good work.
I love you for this, I wish you were my instructor. you're gorgeous too!

Why oxygen is toxic for obligate anaerobic bacteria??
Oxygen is very electronegative and results in reactive oxygen species (ROS, like free radicals) that are very damaging to cell structures unless the organism has enzymes to “detoxify” the ROS. Aerobic species have these enzymes, anaerobic ones usually don’t.
🙏🏼🙏🏼
Oxogen
Oh my gosh! No one has pointed out that typo in YEARS. Wow. I've corrected it. Thanks :)
@@BiologyProfessor Helped me with my exam might as well repay the favor haha!
