    I absolutely hate seeing comments where people praise idols pushing through their injuries and calling them "professionals" for being in pain, damaging their health and well-being because "the show must go on". They are being treated like robots by their companies and the fans just love the "strong and dedicated" image, as if the idols weren't even human beings at all. It's disgusting.

      Not to mention, performing could aggravate the injury and make their condition worse.

    Even if the idol “chose” to go on even though they had an injury or illness, it’s still a negative reflection of the culture they’re living under. They “chose” to go on because they knew that saying “I can’t, I need to rest” would lead to negative feedback or even punishment from their managers or, God forbid, other members. There is no company that would praise an idol for taking the time they need!

  • @TheBailingling
    @TheBailingling 3 ปีที่แล้ว +169

    Sometimes, in theatre, "the show must go on" includes an understudy taking over a role mid-show and even altering choreography. Everyone should have the ability to listen to their own body. If sitting on a chair and singing or rapping is okay for the performer, than they can do that; but if they should be resting or in the hospital, forcing them on the stage is a terrible practice. Idols should be allowed to listen to their own bodies and companies should keep that in mind. If they force an idol to go until their body breaks down, there is no money to be made when the idol actually can't do anything anymore.

Some Itzy members have knee problems but their choreography demands them to drop down to their knees and they usually dont wear knee pads. That's why I learned to appreciate companies that try to prioritize idols' health, like kq.
    After jongho was injured in a public transport accident, they made him sit during the performances for half a year, despite him begging the staff to let him dance.
    They allowed Mingi, back then a bearly debuted idol to take two separate, months long hiatuses for medical and mental health reasons.
    Even if an Idol gets injured just before a performance, they don't try to convince him to still perform. Songhwa got a minor injury two days before kcon and they still made him skip the performance.
    Many times we hear members say how kq staff is pushing them to rest, and take breaks from performing while injured, often against the members protests.
    I think the only instance when a member performed against the doctors and company advise was San just after he had COVID, he shared that the company wanted him to rest a bit longer after his self-isolation but he really wanted to perform and convinced them he was fine.

  • @ruiqiumai323

    Two incidents came to my mind immediately.
    Right before “Rising Sun” promotions, Jaejoong injured his leg. He had a cast and needed crutches to get around. I remember the group talking about the members helping him to wrap the cast so he could take showers. He wasn’t included in the choreography for the music video, but there were some shows where he was required to participate.
    The other one is Moon Heejun. He had a leg/foot injury during “We Are the Future” promotions, but still fully participated in the intense choreography. Kangta wrote about it in H.O.T’s autobiography and said that Heejun would cry after every performance because he was in so much pain. He was famous for his dancing even pre-debut, so I think he was probably under a lot of pressure to do it instead of let Jaewon or Woohyuk take over. He had the most injuries in the group because he either took the most risks or had an accident.

    It is not professionalism when the idols are injured/sick during performances. Professionalism, *imo* , is when the idols keep performing without being affected by doing the wrong step of the choreo/ wardrobe malfunction/ mic pack falling from their pockets and find a temporary but immediate solution.
    Abuse is when you neglect the idols health and let them suffer from their injuries during a performance, not giving them a proper rest to recover.

    • @Danna-ek5hq
      @Danna-ek5hq 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      True when they handle wardrobe malfunctions and doing a step in the choreography wrong and no one notices unless they keep watching multiple times is professionalism but performing sick or injured is abuse and even if the artist wants to perform during the recovering process the manager should stop them and tell them to get rest

  • @scottietrademark
    @scottietrademark 3 ปีที่แล้ว +189

    I don't think its bad for idols to be on stage and singing while sitting down on stage? At least they're able to rest without having to injure themselves more if its something like broken bones or fractures to limbs. I think its too much to have someone perform with the neck brace or head injury. If they don't want to perform and just rest, I understand that and that should be okay too!

      @Danna-ek5hq 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Like Jongho ATEEZ during some answer stages he injured his leg so he was sitting down while singing as the others were singing and dancing I think that their manager suggested Jongho can still perform while sitting so as to not make the injury worse

    • @rachelcookie321
      @rachelcookie321 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I agree, for injuries like a broken arm or leg, singing won’t slow the recovery or make the injury worse so I think it’s ok for them to sing while sitting down. For some idols they might want to be back on stage and don’t want to have to sit of stage waiting to recover. Having an injury can be tiring though so I think for some idols it’s important for them to rest during this time.

    During Aya promotions Moonbyul hurt her arm and went on stage with a sling for many performances, as Mamamoo not only had music shows but also award shows and online concerts. At the same time Hwasa was promoting with Refund Sisters, which included recording Hangout With Yoo episodes, rehearsing choreo & vocals for three songs, AND simultaneously shooting the MVs for Don't Touch Me and Dingga. Oh and her grandmother passed away around that time so she had no time for proper bereavement. People were complaining that Hwasa wasn't performing with energy at that time and it's still rage inducing.
    Additionally, Mamamoo was in a car accident in 2017 and performed BEFORE going to the hospital to be evaluated. 👀 Tbh the members are the type to want to honor all of their commitments, regardless of personal cost, and their company has taken full advantage of that. I'm not against idols wanting to be there for their colleagues and fans but if you're visibly suffering then it's gonna kill the vibe regardless.

    Actually, a lot of idol instances come up, in the movie for Bigbang: MADE G-Dragon coming backstage nearly fainting backstage obviously physically exhausted and still had to go back on stage to perform, BTS on the countless concert clips I see them having oxygen tanks backstage so as to be able to continue the concert, iKON taking oxygen tanks on stage for their concert performances. I do believe it's commendable that they're willing to go past exhaustion for their fans but still the whole system of them not being able to rest enough or constantly having to push past these physical issues cant be healthy, and we don't even comprehend the emotional issues that they do go through.

    majority of idols choose to be idols due to their personal Passion all you just need to do is support them and they will willing work for a longer years with much stable relationship you can earn money and they can do what they like

    Well it's basically a job risk as a dancer/singer/performer in general. However, putting them on stage when they're sick SICK is a big no. Making them sit on stage (caused by physical injuries) is the best way to get a win-win imo (ofc if their condition is good enough to go and the idol agrees) bc they need to be professional. But, if they're too exhausted and sick, also if the doctor recommends to take a break, then they should rest and not perform at all

    It simply goes against SECURITY OF WORKING CONDITIONS LAWS. Nobody should perform with terrible physical or mental health state because it should be a right even to idols and celebrities to rest or take a license to treat it.
    When I first got to know kpop, I saw tons of videos about all possible groups and soloists performing while nauseous, with injuries, after a huge fall while dancing, etc, and I wondered where are the lawyers? Where is the laws for IDOLS??? I am still get this feeling.

    I think that as long as the injury won't be worsened by a singing performance then it's okay (if the idols are willing of course, because injuries can take a lot out of you in a lot of ways) for them to be sitting or have strategic standing-still choreo. In fact, kpop is such a big and profitable industry that it makes sense to have people make some just-in-case plans beforehand, so that idols can still perform without injuring themselves further. That way, the fans get what they want and the idols aren't putting their health at risk, and the companies are both protecting a long-term investment and getting some sweet sweet good pr.

    I know a lot of people have mixed feelings on it, but I am glad that JYPE seems to allow its idols to actually rest when they are unwell in some way. Idols in JYPE have been going on hiatuses for health issues (including mental health) since at least second gen iirc, a lot of people criticise JYPE for this, but I don't think it means they have higher incidence of illness. I think mental illness is just as prevalent under other agencies, but their idols don't get the choice to take a hiatus.
    We need to give companies the message that allowing their idols to take breaks is good, and what we want, rather than criticising them for it

    Monsta X Kihyun in 2019. Their We Are Here tour idk if it was in the Staples center? He fractured his rib closest to his heart but still insisted on singing and dancing on the stage despite staff, the other members and fans telling him to sit down. During the ending ment he said that he took very strong painkillers because he didn't want to miss out on the opportunity to perform on a stage he wanted to perform in since he was young.

    Like, I knew the extent of exploitation in KPOP but I NEVER imagined to see idols with crutches or neck braces on stage!!!!!
    Phew, the sh¡¡¡t 1st & 2nd generation had to deal with!!!
    3rd & 4th stans would break the internet for such a scene!
    In a sense I'm glad that gradually companies are being held accountable for their treatment & things are changing for the "better"...
    But on the other hand I'm like "How the Fuhhck they got away with it in the 1st place & for so long?!?!?"
    I'm so glad you mentioned mostly those 1st & 2nd gen groups.
    Also I'm greatly pleased that you opened the conversation towards how companies nowadays take their violations towards the welfare of their idols.. commodify it.. glamorize it.. package it.. sell it to gullible fans who fetishize this shiyt.
    On top of the list is *HYBE* labels & the way they curate "behind the scenes" shows & documentaries to purposely sell footages of their idols collapsing, grinding in performances while sick & injured and frame it as admirable & praise worthy "professionalism" "dedication" & *LOVE* for fans. Romanticizing the struggle & the inhumane working conditions.
    In return, fans should pay back this painful "gratitude" with equally distressing LOYALTY in form of investing more of their time & money into the group ...
    Psychological manipulation & neuro-marketing at its finest! 👌✨
    Then they show their idols "relaxing" in a supposedly "work free" environment where they become videotaped & heavily scrutinized for content!!!
    Shows like this are actually really good at deceiving the impressionable young fans.. it's really scary, especially since viewers are convinced these are real unfiltered portrayal when it's just as scripted and manipulated like any other fiction tv show.
    It's becoming a harmful trend & it shows how a hyper-capitalist profit-driven industry will do anything to maximize their gain while WOKE-washing their image in the process!

    The types of situations in the video don't just happen to idols, it is what happens in all fields of performance entertainment everywhere. While I do not agree with the mistreatment of anyone or pushing people past their limits against their will, I fully believe in "the show must go on". If the injury is not that bad or you are not that sick... you perform anyway. This all depends on the situation and the individual person of course. The idols sitting in the chairs, that is absolutely what they should have done. The ones performing with minor injuries... that is ok too as long as they are only minor and they made that decision not the company.

    • @RHBR01
      @RHBR01 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Okay, but how is a performer going to evaluate whether an injury or illness is "that bad" or not, especially when a lot of them are happening during performances? They might push through the pain only to see a doctor later and realize that it's actually quite a bit worse than they thought- and then they layered that damage by not addressing it immediately. A "mild" illness can get worse if you don't rest and you're stressing your body out by performing for hours at a time. Performers are not qualified to make those decisions on the spot and these companies have a vested interest in convincing them to do exactly that whether it's in their best interest or not.

    • @catherinekutemeier7654
      @catherinekutemeier7654 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RHBR01 People, especially performers, know their own bodies and their limitations. They are the most qualified to make that decision.

    • @romyjane17
      @romyjane17 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@catherinekutemeier7654 I mean, if medical proffessionals say that an injury needs 1 month rest to fully heal, I think they are more qualified. You might feel better at 2 weeks already, but it could still be internally healing and performing would hinder that.

    • @catherinekutemeier7654
      @catherinekutemeier7654 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@romyjane17 it depends on the situation as I said. If a medical professional is telling you to do something, you should probably listen. I was told by a doctor to never dance again, ever. I was back at it 4 months later because that's all I wanted to do and my dream. Sometimes it's more about listening to yourself and it's ultimately your decision.

    I appreciate this video, but I’m surprised that Twice wasn’t in here, at least 3 members have gotten just a chair and Momo did the whole Fancy MV with a broken toe in heels. Jihyo was in a mini car and learned her choreography on site during Signal after getting knee surgery. It’s not pressure from the company but from fans instead. Members fainting or full on panicking as soon as they get off stage. I’m sure there’s soooo much more as well.
    GWSN also has the whole weird Soso thing going on. That girl is clearly not fully recovered... she’s been out for the same thing 3-4 times.

  • @elizabethlevesque6978

    I would like to give a slightly different perspective to this. I’ll preface by saying I’m not in the entertainment industry but have done local community theater on and off since I was a kid, and minored in Shakespeare studies (which included performance) in undergrad.
    For one, most of us, if faced with the prospect of not going on stage when feeling under the weather or injured WILL fight to go on anyway. We’ve spent so much time dedicated to the craft that the thought of not being able to go on stage and perform is honestly the worst thing. But also, performances (or at least theater) are a team effort. If one goes down we all go down because each person is integral. Sometimes you DO need to just buck up and smile and keep going. I’ve gone onstage feeling like absolute crap but I did it anyway cuz that was my job, and because the thought of letting my team down wasn’t an option. As well as the desire to show people my work because again that’s my work, I enjoy doing it, I WILL do it come hell or high water.
    That being said I don’t think idols should be forced to do full performances if they are injured, that’s dumb. But having them sing off to the side I don’t see as a problem. For one, most of them if not all of them chose to be idols, and just like in any job there is risk of injury. Does that mean companies shouldn’t be attentive to their idol’s needs? Of course not. As employers it’s their job to make sure the idols are healthy and safe in their jobs. But things happen and when you’re a performer you do sometimes need to just suck it up and go on stage. At least with singing you can get away with having someone sit to the side and perform. Imagine if you went to a production of Hamlet, the actor had an injury, and they just had him sit the entire play. It would ruin the entire thing. Singing is different.
    Of course that doesn’t mean that every idol who performs with injuries WANTS to. I’m sure some if not many of them would rather not and are forced to and that’s wrong. Again, singing is different than acting you can get away with sitting someone off to the side to sing, but you can ALSO get away with not having them at all. I just think we need to be careful about how we approach this kind of topic.
