  • Ride along as we tow our Catalina 22 to a majestic lake, deep in the Great Smoky Mountains of western North Carolina. We do some peaceful sailing under a beautiful, backlit cloudy sky, explore a waterfall, and sail off the dock into the sunset.
SV Sophia is a 1990 Catalina 22 with a fixed, wing keel also known as a shoal keel.
Subscribe and ring the bell so you'll be notified when I post part 2 of this trip. We'll have some bass catching and a cook-up over the campfire.

Popped in to check out your channel. Loved the scenery and I can appreciate the "actual speed", lol I've got a Catalina 22 also and you are doing exactly what I'm wanting to do with mine.

the more i see these catalina 22's the more i want one. figured that be better to start with, without never sailing before. use that to learn on before going bigger.

My thoughts exactly. This is the first and only boat I've ever sailed. Every time we go out, I learn something new.

Beautiful scenery, would like to know more about how you have the boat setup, and how is the fixed wing keel different from the swing keel version. Great photography, looking forward to more videos.

Thanks for the great comment! I love the wing keel because you don't have to mess with it. No hinge, no winch, no cable, no worries. Inside the cabin there's a cooler where the winch would be that also serves as a companionway step.
Retracted, the swing keel drafts 2' or .6m. The wing keel drafts 2'6" or .76m.

Where was this? Im in NC also. Just picked up a Spirit 23 sailboat, been re-doing/adding a ton to it before launching it. Like the channel

Part of the adventure is to discover places like this on your own. I've given you some clues and there will be more to come. My goal is to show people these small sailboats can be sailed almost anywhere.

What is the depth of the water. I need about 3 feet of water with my Wing-keel. I see yours is a wing keel too. The lake looks beautiful.

Up there in the mountains, there are places you can be a boat length off the shore in 40 ft. It varies of course.
