The struggle between when to do your duty and when to buck the system here makes for a really great story, and it's perfectly realized in the duel at the end.
I wouldn't categorize this as a romance, but the story is certainly romantic. Lady Ichi is a great character. This one is a gem.

“And tell everyone this for me: I, Isaburo Sasahara, in all my life, have never felt more alive than I do now!”
This movie is about what is to be free in our lifes… About what you really do that it’s not just aggregate automatically in the society’s conveniences… It made me really reflects on the this topic. About love, job, friends and family. The Mifune’s character realizes that with the great identification with the daughter in law. They are practically the same; man and woman in a brutally and cruel japanese society.
Maybe Kobayashi felt this way many times in his life.
I love how the love between the couple arises; it’s totally not cliche and much more realist. How a friendship sometimes is more welcoming and empathetic than your own family. Nakadai apears so few times… But, when it happens, it’s so deep and epic.
I love that finally (of course, it’s not the only example, but it’s not so frequent on this kind of japanese movie) a woman reacts how it really should be on this grotesque and sexier japanese feudal world; Ichi is one of the most badass japanese woman character. I just wanted more slaps and maybe one kick in the balls of that perverted lord… well, that what he deserved.
The final battle. Well. Wordless. Impossible not to get emotional touched.
My Kobayashi’s preferred movie. I love all his movies; but, this one, just caught my heart since the first time I watched. The best performance of Mifune; and there are many I just love. But in this one is all that resume what he was; including the way and the magnetism he had with children. Just observe this in all Mifune’s movies. The children love him.
The funny thing is that i recommended to a friend to watch the second time. He didn’t like so much at first. He just changed his opinion on the second view.

Think of HARAKIRI, KWAIDAN and this movie. Any one of those would have secured a director's legacy as a great filmmaker, and inspired many cinephiles to rank him among the finest the medium has ever produced; Kobayashi not only made all three of them, he did them back-to-back.

Samurai Rebellion is awesome, especially the absolute MASSACRE towards the end. It's the kind of Samurai movie that is less about action and more about insight as to what things were like for Samurai, in terms of politics, honor, love and decision making. The Rebel Samurai is also great! Are you gonna do vids for Sword of the Beast, Samurai Spy, and Kill! ?

    • @bushidoblues9302

Kill! Is amazing - I think it has my absolute favorite opening sequence in any movie ever. I could watch those first ten minutes endlessly on a loop. Brilliance, dark humor, sword fighting, a masterclass by Okamoto.

One of my favorite Kobayashi movies. I understand Hara Kiri is a special kind of special, but, nevertheless, when I go to pop in a Kobayashi film, it’s almost always this one.
I just wish Mifune and Nakadai could have been samurais fighting on the same side for once.

From what I understand of the plot, the daimyo's eldest son and heir died, leaving Ichi's son as the new heir. The daimyo wants her back to present the image of a proper samurai household so that the clan will continue to prosper. This fits in with similar ideas explored in HARAKIRI. Specifically the idea of protecting the image of the Bushido system instead of admitting it's flawed and corrupt.

Kobayashi is incredible, and the actors are also incredible. This film is not as special as Harakiri but it teaches the message about doing what's right and not what the rules state, and also one has to stand up to in justice even if it means losing everything because only that way a soul can rest easy.

I loved your review with a few reserves. I believe you misunderstood why the two friends have to fight. It has nothing to do with them being great or not. It all has to do with what they view as the right thing to do, to be at peace with their conscience. Isaburo wants happiness for the child and revenge for the injustice, Tatewaki wants to keep his honour by doing his duty as a samurai who is employed by the clan. It has nothing to do with his being a great swordsman. In fact, deep inside he may feel that his friend is better than himself. I may be wrong but I feel Isaburo did not fight him earlier because then this would have been revealed too. Moreover, he does not feel the need to prove anything nor to disrupt his peaceful friendship with Tatewaki for a senseless sword fight that may hurt one of them. At the end, they know they have to fight each for their personal honour and to be able to do what they believe is right. Tatewaki does not go beyond his designated place in the clan, Isaburo does. His life changed with Ichi's arrival and the love he experienced both in his son's marriage and the reflection on him, for Ichi was kind to him and his shrew of a wife. And he came to love his daughter-in-law. That is why the rebellion took place. He changed his whole perspective on life and duty. At first his life and his duty were only for the interest of the whole clan with love entering the picture, family became the first. And from then on his primary duty belonged to the family instead of the clan. That is where the drama is. He represent a new thought and his friend is the old one.

I agree with this interpretation as well. I always thought Tetsuya Nakadai's character even know he'd lose in a dual with Toshiro Mafune's character. But his honor dictated he fight anyway. That seems to be a reoccurring theme for Kobayashi films too so it fits.

As always I enjoy watching you share your passion in relation to your sincere appreciation of Japanese Samurai films. The concept of bushido, the creed at the heart of a true Samurai's reason for living and if need be dying in acceptance of his masters desires speaks volumes as to the true meaning of being loyal and loyalty. I truly love the sinister behavior of the discarded masters mistress who absolutely defies the social rules of behavior and slaps her master and drags one of his concubines down a hallway by her hair, a total badass! Oh I hope when you do your refreshed review of Ran you do a deep dive into the dark and sinister female character that brings the house down in flames! Perhaps a review of other dark roles women portray in the Samurai films could make for a great series. So looking forward to your new review of RAN sooner rather than later.

      @Teleflexx ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@bushidoblues9302 Hi, although many people when they critique Ran they always talk about the film as being a rework of the Shakespeare play King Lear...but while Ran adopts the general premise of Lear..the assumption of power while the King still lives...but what Kurosawa does is dig deeper into the machinations of the many dark and deadly deeds done by the Lord as a younger and more bloodthirsty man a look back at his character, the punishments doled out to the members of the clans that were conquered were by any stretch of the imagination terrifying, the forced blinding of the son of a defeated riva,l the taking of property and ancestral lands...in the film you surely remember the chilling words of Lady Kaede when she says " My parents were killed in this very room ." Laughing at the fact that finally she had gotten her revenge and brought down the house of Ichomonji ! This film is to me so much more than aspiring for power, to me this film is really about how our treatment of others in our lives eventually resolves into what our lives are like near it's end. Our actions in life have consequences.

I think the phone is why young people are so incapable of taking in great cinema. Anything with subtitles is hopeless because it's impossible to get them to put their phone down. For anything English Language that has visual storytelling; also hopeless because they won't look at the actual screen.
If you try to explain to them how completely insane and dysfunctional it is to be constantly flicking through 5 second clips on the internet instead of paying attention to what is going on, they are already looking at some nonsense on the internet before you finish the sentence, then they deflect with some nonsense joke they got off the internet instead of an actual reply to what you said.
An EMP would be the best and worst thing to happen to young people today. Those who literally cannot live without looking at their phone every 15 seconds will die, and the others will be rescued from this living hell they all seem to be in.

This movie taught me that you can't be indifferent on a situation where someone try to steal what you love and that you have to fight for it until the end, be it victory or defeat. Truly life changing film, thanks to master Kobayashi
