So glad I found this video, finished in 40 min. I had to use an actual pry bar to remove the damn thing. That paper mark the screw and bolt position was such a handful tip.
Thank you! Your video had the best filming. Your belt diagram was was a bonus just in case. My favorite was your paper marking the tension bolt. I never in a million years thought I’d attempt getting under the hood of a car. The only thing that set me back was I don’t recall mention of removing the wire harness retaining clip from the old alternator and attaching to the new one. I was on hold with my auto parts store for 20 minutes before they answered my quiestion. Lol. Out of all the videos I watched not one person mentioned this part. Maybe I missed the mention? Anyway, I needed to thank you for your video as I used it and saved $400.
One of my goals is to make a video helpful to someone with no experience. I'm always happy to hear of someone using a video to complete a job they otherwise wouldn't have done. I pride myself on not missing details like detaching a wiring harness. Now I'm going to look at my video again lol.
Just wanted to say thnx for this video it’s a life saver ...today my alternator went out on me and I had no idea how I was gonna replace since I have limited mechanical abilities but I found your video and followed it step by step and bam my car is back up and running..so thank u very much sir for making the video
Just changed my alternator. Works perfect. I wrote down the instructions. Also did the index card. It helped. I noticed that if you use locking pliers to hold the belt down you don't have to remove it all the way. And it won't unravel. In this day of thanks. I thank you for making this video.
Thank you for video. Practically perfect. Belt diagram appeared very handy. :) My electric cable holder appeared to be loop, not fork. (matrix 2010) Had trouble to popup plastic cover over nut. Had to swear over refurbished OEM alternator - frozen nut was pushed to far in and was not fitting "saddle". Hammer, c-clamp, pushing against and finally filing helped. Assembled, engine started - no red light on battery, no bad lights anywhere. Thank you again! PS: shut engine of fin 2 sec, cleaned stuff, had rest - and car doesn't start at all.... Well, it's the whole different story now.

My alternator just crapped on me last night and left me walking, thank you for the video, TH-cam is where I get most all of my mechanical knowledge anyway
@@KK4DQQ did your power steering and car just die while driving too? That's what happened to me, I realized that my car was making a funny noise at first and then 50 miles later I guess my battery died killing everything
Fantastic! One of my goals in making a video is to make it clear and detailed enough that a first timer or young person, more comfortable around a smart phone or computer, can complete a repair. Thanks for the comment.
I just did this on my Matrix. The original alt lasted 250K miles and the rebuilt Autozone one 26K (lifetime warranty). The batt light came on (only at idle) and it had 12V, at the battery, never higher, wipers ran slow as well. This car has the spring loaded hydraulic tensioner. I tied the serpentine belt to the motor mount so I didn't have to re-thread it after. Just loosened the tensioner, pulled the belt off the alternator and tied it in place. The rest is pretty easy. I had to move the AC wire harness tab from the old to new alternator. The battery connector tabs didn't fit in the plastic piece on the new alternator so I turned the cable around and it fit fine.
I'm telling you what right now I just got done doing mine and what a pain in the ass. Whatever car he's working on doesn't have that motor mount right in the way. Therefore you can get off that adjuster bracket so you have to loosen it all the way as far as you can and push it out of the way in finagle the altr out by gently pushing on the AC condenser lines
Good vid there . This looks much easier than on a Nissan. VQ30DE engine where you have to detach the AC compressor but not disconnected it and radiator fans to get to it and remove from underneath the jacked up car. Maxima
Thank you for the video you made....is great effort to work on tight spaces but with little patience it CAN be done. However I would say that is BEST to disconect the positive (RED) battery terminal....
Great video! Thank you for posting! My 14mm is giving me issue on the 2nd step, it is not budging and the engine is moving when I apply more force, what should I do?
I just can't get that serpentine belt back on. Everything else went fine. Great video. There is something on top of the crank shaft and the belt wants to go under that. Looks like some kind of timing sensor very close to the cs. I just don't have enough room to get the belt over the alternator. I think it should go over that instead of under it. Help please.
I was hoping you measured the length of the bolt because I changed my alternator last year and didn't mark the distance of the adjusting bolt . My belt squeals a bit at first start up but it must be a bit too loose or the belt is just old
Great video, thanks. The alternator on my 2009 Pontiac Vibe is making a loud whining noise so I've ordered a replacement. My question is: did you have a problem resetting the radio after the battery was disconnected?
Just swapped the alternator in a 13 corolla, and i cant get the belt back on. It’s nowhere close to as easy as it was in this video… any thoughts on why that could be? It’s super cold here. Im in Wisconsin.
This is a great video and a great help but I ran into one small issue. the 12mm that is shown at 1 minute 43 seconds, the head broke off so the bolt is in the old alternator. I need to get the specs for the bolt. I tried to get one from the parts store but it did not fit. I called the dealer and they were able to give me the specs they have but it was the same as what I bought that did not fit.
I know this is two years old, but here's my advice. Try to see if Lowes or Home depot has the bolt in stock. Bring the remnants with you. The alternator bolt can be used to remove the brake drum on the car.
@@TehKaiser - No, you can NOT use a Std 'Bolt'('Screw') from H/D or Lowes, EVER!!! I have a question... I have a 2001 Buick Century that is having electrical dashboard issues. When it's night time, the headlights and dashboard lights are suppose to come on automatically. The only thing that is coming on are the headlights. I've checked my fuses and they are all still good. What is going on?
+TheRealRiddla I used to have that same Century too but it was totaled out. If the fuses are good you may have to get a schematic. That problem sounds like it may require the dreaded dashboard dis-assembly! Good luck.
I have a 2007 Pontiac Vibe and the car didn't start one day. I need a boost to start it up but once the AC or any lights are turned on, the car just dies. We think it's the alternator. Do you think I should take this route and get a new alternator and replace it myself? The way you taught it seems really easy if I take my time. What's your advice?
Usually when the alternator fails, a battery icon will light up on the dash. If possible have the alternator tested or check for charging voltage on the battery terminals. You should see just over 14V. If only 12V is present the alternator is not working. Make sure all connections in the circuit are tight. What you are seeing does seem to indicate a bad alternator or other charging circuit problem. I hope this helps and good luck!
can you help me out. I replaced my alternator the same year and make but my belt seizes up when the ac is turned on. it will sezies up and then start making this squealing sound.
Squealing is usually a loose or glazed belt. I would try tightening it up some first. The usual rule of thumb is 1/2" of deflection at the longest run of the belt.
Because you're supposed to take cables out the battery before you do any work to it when it comes to the electrical system. Then when you go to reconnect you always connect the positive first, and then the negative. Less of a chance to short the battery and have an explosion when you said the negative for last
