I love how as soon as you go into space, the boss battle track goes from this high energy, funky "He he! We're having a boss battle!" music to 12:10 these ominous, alien sounding low synths that gives you the feeling that you're shooting at something so overwhelming that *you can't even fully understand it.* I only learned about this game because of the PS1 Demo disk.
Yeah the change in boss theme the first time you fight Hannibal is pretty jarring. The change to the boss theme for Yggdrasil (the final boss) is also pretty jarring too.

10:09 - This was the level that was featured on one of the PS1 sampler discs that would come in the mail. This is how I found out about the game back then and bought it. By far the best level of them all, in my opinion. But I gotta lend some credits to the last level; between the soundtrack and finding out just how much of an impact your mission had on over 7 billion people losing their lives... very emotional level.
Same! except that the sampler game comes with the PS my dad bought for us. we hooked into this game and replay this game over and over even if it's just the trial version. my bro and I were blown away when we got the actual game.
It's so cool that now we're gonna get a modern release of both this AND its sequel RayCrisissoon . In both original and HD version. Coming to the Switch and PS4.
When Raystorm first came out, Working Designs had a contest. You had to play at a difficulty called Combat mode and if you beat the game you got a special code where you could enter in a contest to win money. Eventually the contest was over and Working Designs released a code that would allow the Combat Mode to be turn off and Free Play activated. The code is online if you search for it. They actually limited the levels you could play unless you were on higher difficulty and fixed many flaws that the original Japanese release had.
Ah, the good old 32-bit days...almost as good as the 16-bit days. Raystorm was a bit of a throwback to that era but only in the best of ways: straightforward gameplay, selectable difficulty levels for all ages from 9 to 99 years, comic-book style graphics, epic boss fights and an almost danceable soundtrack. Technically though the game was more than up to snuff, surpassing even games that came after, like Einhander, R-Type Delta or the disappointing Thunder Force 5.
I know your comment is 3 years old but I had to say: When he said Raystorm surpassed Einhander, that's when I took it personal 🤨 lol I havent played Raystorm yet but soon we'll get a final verdict!
This game is really cool, i didnt ever get the full game but always played the demo version, it soon became an instant favorite. So a good nostalgia trip. 10:05
Here after Cyberpunk 2077. Never realized this was the golden age of gaming where you were able to play the game with no patches on day one. How time have changed.
I wish you uploaded in 60 fps! Raystorm (and Raycrisis) are among the most impressive looking polygonal games on the system, due in large part to running at 60 fps even with all of the crazy explosions and effects they have going on.
Sapharan Yes, Raystorm runs at 60 fps on PSX, as I mentioned above. You can see a list of PSX games with 3D graphics which run at 60 fps here: www.sega-16.com/forum/showthread.php?26920-Games-with-3D-graphics-running-at-60-fps-5th-Generation-Consoles/
Sapharan For some idiotic reason youtube only allows videos to display at 60 fps if they're in HD resolutions. To cubex55: If you re-encode your videos at 960x720 or higher before uploading, they should show up on youtube at 60 fps. (But this could actually result in lower vid quality, ironically enough.)
Have you noticed how the bigger shuttles have the middle part destroyed, while the smaller ones are entirely destroyed? (these darker ships at the bottom of the level)
grumblekin This game really pushed the limits of the PS1. 60FPS with decent graphics on a home console at the time was simply unheard of, let alone an arcade-perfect port.

I guess the command ship uses the hyperspace speed and instantly arrived near Earth base from moon gravity catapult like other sci-fi movies and games like Star Wars or No Man's Sky so the scene might not even spotted the command ship.
I just played through Arcade mode on Duckstation for the first time since I played it on my PS1 (I still have the original game in mint condition but that's more or less a showpiece now).. Anyway I had it in my head for some reason that this game was easy, but the latter bosses are certainly not! I only had 4 credits remaining when the end credits rolled, but I suppose that's not too bad after not playing it for 20 or so years. Default settings/ship number/difficulty in the middle/combat mode. Still, it kicked my ass pretty good, and overall I didn't like it as much as I used to, certainly not enough to get good enough to be able to one CC it again. I really prefer the first 2D game and I don't like Ray Crisis either. I had it in 4K with all geometry fixed and it looked amazing I will admit. If you want to play this game on a modern computer, use Duckstation with PGXP correction on and a 16x Upscale if you have anything from a 3060 onwards. It looks like a modern game! But for me it was one of those situations where I should have just enjoyed the memory as the game is not the amazing game I remembered.

I never really liked early 3D. Graphically, Rayforce, the predecessor , was more pleasant to look at. Also noticing that it sounds like they took Rayforce's soundtrack and only slightly rehashed it.
Calm down Juan, Rayforce is still considered as RAY series hahaha. That was just Kitten's opinion. Even if you compare it to, Raystorm's ambience still a lot more darker than both Raycrisis and Rayforce. Including the con-human conflict. And yet of Raystorm potentially placed on different Universe made this game as Rayforce of its own. That's why they made R-Gear to remastered Raystorm on PS3 in honor to prototype game of Rayforce: R-Gear.
