- This is a song from a 1982 Hong Kong TVB special. Teresa performed several English songs including a duet with George Lam. Special guest artists included Alan Tam, Ricky Hui, etc.
I've only just discovered Teresa's music a couple of weeks ago, but I think I can confidently say that her cover of this song greatly triumphs over the original.

I grew up listening to her voice on the radio everyday, seeing her in newspapers and magazines, and once in a while, she appeared on TV. I felt as if I knew her personally. She passed away when she was 42. I was heart-broken. With the advent of internet, particularly, TH-cam, her fans have increased in number after her passing. Young girls all over the world become famous by mimicking her. Yet, none can sing or speak in as many languages as she did. She was just special.

Actually, the original version was written from the male point of view and recorded by The Temptations and Howard Keel. Both versions are here on You Tube. The songwriters didn't like the way it sounded and re-wrote some of the lyrics to reflect the female perspective then Charlene's recorded it. But her version contained a spoken word portion that some people objected to and it was pulled just as it was about to be a hit. Then Mary McGregor cut a version and after hers ran it's course, Charlene's version was re-released minus the spoken word. This version is absolutely wonderful too.

Teresa had a lot of her own songs, written for her but she covered songs by other singers too. The covers outshine the original versions and become her signature tunes like 何日君再来 "When will you come again?," 月亮代表我的心 "The moon represents my heart," 夜来香 "Fragrance in the night," and so on.

She sang the theme song for the first TV series made in Taiwan. She started singing to supplement her father's income. When she first came to my hometown in Seremban, my neighbour got for me an autographed photo from her. She became huge in Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and all surrounding countries. At 19 she went to Japan and became a superstar. Due to some political reasons, she went to USA and stayed for some time, away from work. During that time, she became the beloved of Mainland China. Her songs were so influential that the government banned her songs officially. The mainland Chinese said, "In the day time, we obey Old Deng. At night we listen to Little Deng." Old Deng was Deng Xiaoping, the political leader in China at that time. Little Deng referred to Teresa Teng. Deng and Teng are the same Chinese character, 鄧 but slightly different pronunciations and spellings depending on the community. There are many songs that people remember TT for which are actually covers. However, she made much bigger hits than the original singers did and many mistake her for the original singer. The original singer of 'The moon represents my heart' is Chen Fen Lan, another Taiwanese. I think, I covered this song too, somewhere in my channel or maybe in my other channels.
