Yes, Wonderland is a very jazzy piece of music. But BAND-MAID created their own style in the end. This song is from their album CONQUEROR, released in 2019. That album was highly experimental. For me, CONQUEROR was their first truly independent album, at the stage in their career when they finally, so to say, graduated from their own university, where a lot of professors were teaching them composition and arrangement, and Kanami finally felt confident enough to lay her own path in the sky 😊 I don't remember if you have reacted to "start over" already? To me it seems like a predecessor to Wonderland. Kanami tried a new style, and a year later, it cristallized into Wonderland. The same thing happened with two other songs, The Dragon Cries and "flying high" (both from CONQUEROR album). The Dragon Cries is the proof of concept, "flying high" is the masterpiece where the concept is perfected. Thanks again for your wonderful analysis!
Thank you for all of the info! I will definitely have to check out The Dragon Cries and Flying High. ALSO THANK YOU SO MUCH VLADIMIR!! You as so incredibly generous!!!
Another way to look at it is, they're also going nuts on this song. Just not in a flashy, obvious instrumental way. More in the realm of tastiness and arrangement.
In the second chorus, KANAMI continues to play the riff that was in unison with the bass. The person behind them was MIKU who was scaling out the guitar phrases. Of course that was intentional, and as you might have guessed, this song has some jazz elements. MIKU's scale-out is one of them.
"Wonderland" is among the favorites of all Band-Maid fans. You are correct about the jazz/rock feel of the song. Again, "Wonderland" really showcases Saiki's vocal range and the amazing musical diversity of these talented young women. They are a joy to listen to!
Yes MISA! and Akane are really Jazz musicians disguised as Rock Stars but as we know Jazz and Blues is the foundation for Rock music! These two have it spades! Thanks Vladimir…he will not steer you wrong. Checkout some of his fan cam they’re great! Keep reacting to Band-Maid! 🤘🕊️🦍🥷👸🏻👀PO!
Wonderland is great and I’m glad you did it but I would’ve bet (and lost) $100 that the next time I saw you do a Band-Maid reaction it would be to the new song off the new album (Epic Narratives) called Forbidden Tale. There are so many great choices but I recommend ‘Forbidden Tale’, ‘The one’ and ‘Toi et Moi’ off the new album. Forbidden Tale is the only one with a video, so far, though.
I really want to cover the album, it just happened to drop after I had prepped videos for a trip. But it is definitely on the top of my list for my next recording session!
Certainly the level of technicality is on par with Steely Dan, but they don't do as many Jazz chords, except that bit in 'Secret My Lips'. More like early Steely Dan. But Akane and MISA did meet while attending the Tokyo School of Music, so jazz would be no problem for them. And how can you possibly forget Saiki Atsumi? Maybe you don't do enough BAND-MAID, or Steely Dan. And Kanami's hero is Carlos Santana who is more than capable in the Latin Jazz department. You can hear the influence in that little lead section. Two background vocalists? Miku is the only background vocalist. If there's a second one in there it's Saiki doubling herself. You'd have to check the backing tracks.

Jazzy courtesy of MISA. A common remark is that MISA is a jazz bassist playing in a rock band.

WONDERLAND sounds like Jazz because it’s Jazzy, especially AKANE’s drumming, with the cross-sticking during the quiet parts.
*adding sigh of pleasant resignation to the list of emotional reactions to band-maid*

I wouldn't call this song jazzy, it's just a great rock song with a cool beat. One of my favorites.
