When I read the title 'creatures from the abyss', I thought, 'I think I've heard or seen that before' then I remembered my very old pirated VCD 'Piranha 4: Creatures from the Abyss' and it turned out to be this one! I'm surprised bc it's so very random; for me it's a 0.1% chance that someone will talk about this movie. It's so very rare that I thought that I'm the only one who knows this flick exists. Thanks, man.
Okay, I thought I remembered first hearing about this movie from a Rifftrax preview. But, I will say, while this movie looks batshit insane, the effects for the most part do look decent. Shame we'll never get a sequel titled "Creatures from the Abyss 2: Dead by Prawn". lol

Even seeing is not quite believing. I bought the DVD several years ago from a Besy Buy bargin bin. Watched it, then lost the DVD after a move. I really started to think i had imagined it until seeing this video!
Always loved the fact that this is basically Evil Dead at sea (I won't call it The Seavil Dead...). In addition to what you mentioned there is the square-jawed nerd being the only survivor instead of the typical hero type and the whole sequence of the guy "disappearing" into the basement or equivalent and jumping out, scaring the protagonist and finding a major plot point.
I admit that I kind of really like this movie. The set just reminds me so much of my childhood growing up in a trendy fitness center in the late 80s and early 90s. The Thing if it was fabulously 1991 tacky.

Mummy Theme Park is a MUST. It looks like it was shot with 1/10 the budget of Plankton... I mean, Creatures from the Abyss. And the performances in Mummy Theme Park make the acting in this one look like Oppenheimer.
A sea monster version of the Evil Dead would indeed make a very good video game. Oh, the possibilities of it all. You could have killer mermaids, a Kraken, & stuff from every creature feature that's sea monster themed, all into one franchise.

I then bought the German Blu-ray copy which had so much added material that was cut out of the North American release. It is truly a very strange and schlocky film, and it clearly wears it's influences on its sleeves.

I saw this movie when I was 8 years old. I never got over the fish fucking scene, I told my friends in school about it and they all laughed at me and denied such a movie existed( My friends didn't have cable so they would have probably never seen it). I would then invite those friends over when it aired on channel 56 Cinema Golden, I lost my only 2 friends that day.
