I was quoted $1,100 to replace the leaking water pump. Using my weekend and watching your video I got the job done. You rock! The only caution I have to add for folks is when you are putting the timing belt tensioner back on to make sure you slip the tensioner onto the protruding key (opposite of the spring hook hole) when you are putting it back on with the bolt.
Just a note if someone has not already mentioned. Loosen the camshaft gear bolt 1st before removing timing belt that way you don't have to block the gear, and you will not risk the camshaft rotating. Same when tighting. Looked at your video for a refresher before doing the job again. Thanks Great job.

It's suggested to always replace the belt when the pump is replaced. I don't think you can access the pump without removing the pulley and the plastic cover.
Thanks! Not really a fun video here but great for future usage. I've had a lot of people ask me for a D series timing belt video and finally had an opportunity to create one.

Gonna attempt this either this weekend or the next. Quick question: is it NECESSARY to remove the spark plugs? I also have a 1997 Celica, and did the timing belt in Febrary on it, but left the plugs in for it. It made cranking the engine via the crank pulley a little weird (like, not smooth) but it was doable. Just wondering if it's different on a Honda?
Same, it is doable but makes the engine spin freely with them removed. If left in the cylinders build compression and makes it harder to turn, but it's not hard at all unless you have spaghetti arms. Lol
@@GarageBuiltHondas Thanks for answering, brother. Yeah, I found no problem with leaving the plugs in... ...but I couldn't get the the crank bolt undone, despite 2 hours of struggle. My new tools just arrived, so I'm gonna try again this weekend.

Just bought a 1996 Civic and was looking at Rock Auto for the Continental Belts, i see two different A/C belts one that says Multi V-Belt and one that doesnt, was just wondering if theres any difference or if they would both work/fit.
Update: I just did the timing belt on my civic a couple of days ago. I thought it was hard but it was super easy. Didn’t change the water pump on mine cuz it wasn’t leaking and stuff. But my next timing belt change I will change out the water pump
So when you spin the crank to get tdc you are also spinning the pulley above to tdc?. To take off the crank bolt with the 17 you dont have to put anything in the pulley to choke it from spinning losing from tdc ? Im just a little confused because he used a 17 to get tdc and then the same bolt that turned to get tdc was the one that came off to acces the waterpump. Please elaborate
Pretty sure he was able to go about it this way because he used an impact gun which broke that 17 loose and spun it back without cranking the pulley out of alignment to tdc. So if you're not using an impact gun like that you would have to use that Honda tool and a breaker bar to crank against eachother to break the 17 crank bolt loose while keeping the pulley in it's place.
I hope people still see this ! If I wanted to just acces the Oil pump would I still have to remove every belt ? Or would the ones connected to the crank and alternator be enough to pull it off and proceed ?
I watched many d series timing belt videos including Eric the car guys before doing mine and in all of them they say the tension side of the belt should be on the exhaust manifold side, left side when looking at the cam gear dead on.
