My brother had this record. I always wanted to hear “cat”. Years later, He bought a tape cassette for our road trip on the east coast, solidifying that Cat Stevens was our music. He died 11 years ago today at the young age of 53. I realized 1/2 way through the day that he was 11 years older than me. I am the same age he was when he died so young. Its a reminder of the bigger picture. Everyone has a lifetime and maybe multiples to wake up to their spiritual self. We all have the opportunity to "carry the words of love." The eternal self is who you really are, and the lifetimes are dreams of a separated self that you think you are. Every lifetime has impact large or small upon the course of humanity. We are all the very young ones. When you wake up, you realize that you are that eternal self and so is everyone else. You naturally change your mind and carry those words of love, and want that better world for everyone. You realize that love can change it all.
My amazing son lost his battle with depression in January, not sure if I will ever stop hurting, but this song gives me hope that he is at peace in heaven, he was a loving and caring young man who could have changed the world. It's strange how something like this shows up just when you need to hear it. My two dearest friends died suddenly this year. One in January and the other in July. In both cases these were guys I saw at least once a week and/or talked to or messaged every day. I knew both 25 to 30 years. I'm still grieving and continue to feel lost without them in my life.I know at some point my happy memories will overtake my grief. That just hasn't happened yet.😢

I was almost 13 years when that song came out in 1974 and I didn't understand what he meant till later on in life. I'm glad I grew up in the late 1960's, 1970's and have great appreciation of how they wrote music, that's why I will always and forever have the 1960's, 1970's music in my heart, today's music still haven't closed to the music of the past.

When I realized that her time was short, just a couple of years later, I was petrified. What is it with teen girls? As the last 48 years have flown by, I've only missed her more. One of our daughters asked me, not too long ago, if I was afraid of death. She is an RN with hospice in our area. I said, "no!", that I looked forward to it, because I miss my mother. She has no way of understanding, till I'm gone, and even then, not really. How to explain to someone, missing something they've always had? Her children are almost all grown, while I lost mine 13 days after turning 20, 5 years before she was born. It's like trying to explain the pain of a hand, when the arm is gone.

I always heard one line from this song differently, and incorrectly. My version of that line: "will you carry the words, 'I. Will. Love.' will you?" I suppose my mind translated the words into that version of the lyric, because holding fast the resolution to continue to love in the face of loss and pain is difficult, demanding and brave. But I love this song, because it's both a life lesson and a sweet memory of my teen years.
I don't read death in this song. I see it as a welcome from a father to his newborn stating that life is brief but they both have the chance to make a better world, he by staying around (patching his blue jeans to make them longer lasting) and the child by living up to the ideal (the great white bird).
IMO this song is talking about mortality and the fact people old and young don't want to die, but it happens anyway to everyone. And only some people go to heaven. The patches on the faded jeans are symbolic of trying to live or stay healthy through illness and keep living. And when someone dies after struggling to stay alive, it makes their death harder.

There is the element of loss in these lyrics but there is also the words of hope and it's about the full circle of life and the many good and bad things we go through life is always going to have its struggles but we have to face them head on with hope and the knowledge we as a species were built to endure it all understanding that ya dont get a good without bad an up without down a back without front is a powerful thing and that understanding gives us the true love of life and that is what the lyrics here really mean

IMO this song is talking about mortality and the fact people old and young don't want to die, but it happens anyway to everyone. And only some people go to heaven. The patches on the faded jeans are symbolic of trying to live or stay healthy through illness and keep living. And when someone dies after struggling to stay alive, it makes their death harder.
