  • Today I am working on my girlfriends 2006 Chevy Cobalt, I am replacing the lower control arm and strut mount. The caged / captive nut started to spin on me but I was able to get it out without cutting up the car. I really hope you find this video helpful and entertaining. I really feel like I put a lot of useful info in this video and I hope you all appreciate it!

    This is about the only video showing how to get that bolt out of the left side. Every one I've seen so far is either from the right or the bolt spins right out. The left side has less room than the right. The left bushing is bad on my Cobalt so I'm watching to see what I'm getting into. I'm going to keep spraying it for a bout a week before I try it but I got the bolt and cage nut from GM to have on hand just in case. Thank you very much for posting this as the view was extremely helpful and help me see exactly how it was put together which is extremely important in case it doesn't come loose.

      Thank you so much for the kind words. I rewatched this video and it definitely isn't the best BUT I am really happy to know that the information was helpful. I truthfully got the idea from reading lots of forum posts about people hammering machinist or wood splitting wedges where I put all the chisels and pickle fork. Good luck to you!

      I totally agree Travis, it was a lot of struggle with this car and I had only read of how to lock up the captive nut, I had not seen a good video. So I decided to try and document it as best as I could, I thank you for watching, I hope this video does help you, good luck and take care!

    Replaced two control arms on my kids Cobalt last weekend. The cage was broken off the upper nut on one side. The bolts were frozen to the bushing sleeves on both sides. I ended up cutting off the bolts using a Sawzall right above and below the bushing and replacing the bolts. I had to pry the cage partway off the other side to get the cut bolt and captive nut out. Then held them in place to tighten using a 15/16 open end wrench. Took me 6 hours to do a job that only required taking out and installing 8 bolts.

      I was sooo happy that didnt happen to me. The fact that I was able to shove a bunch of wedges in and successfully got the bolt out was a blessing. Good on you for not giving up and getting the job done! Also, prior to starting the job, I told my girlfriend "oh yeah, this will only take 2hrs..."

    How did you get the new bolt in with the cage spinning?

    • @joesdiy4260
      @joesdiy4260  ปีที่แล้ว

      I asked myself the same question when I put it all back together lol I cleaned the bolt up as best as I could and SLATHERED it in anti-seize to provide the least amount of resistance. I feel like there had to be some welds left over, so maybe the cage caught on those and as soon as there was enough tension the cage clamped down and held in place.

      @@TheAntz29 please call your local Chevrolet dealer or auto parts store, provide your VIN and you will be given the correct part number. You can also try to do all this yourself through rockauto.com, you do not need to provide a VIN on rockauto. Good luck and take care!
