Mark Lowry has had a varied career. Not only does he sing and write songs, he is a really funny comedian. He spent years with the Gaither Vocal Band. He kept Bill Gaither in stitches. God gave that man lots of talent, and he has used it well. Thanks Viking, for featuring this version in your Advent Calendar this year. It's one of my favorites! 😊
I’ve seen Mark live in concert and have watched a couple of his other specials on VHS. My favorite story of his is when he jokes about being a hyperactive child and causing some issues at home or in class. He said despite these issues, his mother told him and others: “one day God is going to use Mark.” And boy was Mark’s mom ever right. God most certainly used Mark through his multi-talent and especially through writing Mary, Did Yiu Know. Through the many covers of this song by numerous artists, the amount of people who have heard the gospel is immense.
lt is amazing Mark held that note for so long. That is hard to do standing, let alone sitting. He is sitting, because he suffers from MS. He wrote this as a sermon for a church he was visiting to be the guest speaker. He wanted to know if they were having a cup of coffee with Mary, what they would ask her. Did she know what her son would do? Years later, Buddy Green added the music to Mark's words.
As the song's lyricist, Mark's delivery gives an insight into how he and Buddy Green conceived of the intent behind it. Jamey Ray (the male singer on the far left of the video) is Voctave's arranger, and this version allows their choral parts to beautifully let Mark's lead shine as well as blow the roof off together in the climactic moments. While all of Voctave's members are very good singers, Kate Lott's high soprano notes at times like the ending take a great deal of control to ping through as part of the background.
Mark once explained that he got to thinking about what he'd want to ask Mary if he had the chance. These lyrics came to him and his friend, Buddy Greene, set his questions to music! They won a Dove Award for this beautiful song! 💞
Mark has MS, this is why he is sitting. But to sit while singing like this is amazing. But as a singer that breath he held started at the line "the praises of the lamb" that is all one breath, the he did it again at " is the great I Am" this is amazing breath control, for a healthy young singer!
thank you so much for reacting to Voctave ft Mark Lowry. This is my favorite version. Before this was The Gaither vocal band ft Mark Lowry. I like a lot of versions, but this is the best, It sounds like a choir of angles behind him! He sings it differently because he wrote it! It comes from his heart. ty Viking! Oh I got to see Mark many years ago, this guy sings, does comedy and was so generous to the young disabled person in the front row. He gave that person many different cds of his! Amazing man.
So glad you have reacted to Voctave. They are the best in the world for pure vocals. May I suggest for Christmas O Come All Ye Faithful, O Holy Night, Where Are You Christmas, Need a Little Christmas, Carol of the Bells. For Disney (where they all sing) I recommend; Disney Princess Medley, Disney Love Medley (sung with Kristin from PTX), Disney Heroes and Villains. For Broadway; The Great Movie Medley, One Short Day, Somewhere (where you can hear each singer sing a solo), I am What I am (sung with The Swingles) and anything else Voctave performs. Amazing.
I'm so happy you read my comment - it is such an ethereal, heavenly, angelic song. My first exposure was Pentatonix and was impressed. Then I checked out Voctave's version and I couldn't believe my ears, Mark IS the lyricist and later he had a friend Bobby Greene wrote the music. 24 seconds, then 17 seconds. It is without a doubt the most beautiful rendition of this song. A couple of months after I heard Voctave and Mark do this, Voctave came to Florida State University. It was late January and they did a full show. If you ever get the chance to see them in person - take it, you'll never regret it.
Great reaction, I have probably seen and heard this so many times over the years and it still gives me goosebumps and you are correct Mark wrote the lyrics and Buddy Greene wrote the music. Mark Lowry is not just a singer his is actually a really funny speaker as well.
Such a wonderful reaction, your appreciation for all the little details is lovely. I love to hear Mark sing his beautiful song, his passion really ramps up the power.Thank you so much for this one!!
Great version of this song! Yes, Mark wrote it!🙏 Mark is a cool guy and a class act! If you haven’t already, you should check out Dan Vasc doing Beyond Belief with John Schlitt and John Lawry, two of the members of Petra, the band that made Dan want to be a singer, after he heard Jekyll And Hyde.
Thank you for reacting to what is my favourite version of this beautiful Christmas Carol. I really like the others by Home Free and Pentatonix but hearing the author sing it as he intended is sheer vocal perfection! Anything by #Voctave is a master class every time! Please more Christmas music by Voctave; there are so many great ones to choose from but O Come, All Ye Faithful, O Holy Night, Where Are You Christmas, All Is Well and The Christmas Song are all MUSTs, please and thank you!
This is the best version of this song in my opinion. Jamey Ray’s arrangement, the writer of the lyrics and the heavenly voices of Voctave. All together it’s just magical! ❤
This should have been titled Mark Lowry, accompanied by octave. They just backed him up. This man wrote the song, so there is nobody better to sing it since he knows how it was meant to be delivered. He is the lead here.
Mark Lowery is an amazing singer and comedian. You should check out his stuff with the Gaither Vocal Band. He is the comic of the group and im sure he had everyone in Voctave in stitches the entire time. Btw, great reaction to Geoff Castellucci's Carol of the Bells. Better known as Thunder of the Bells.
I too first heard this in vocal form from Pentatonix. This version is just as awesome as the Pentatonix version. Goosebumps all over. Thank you for reacting to this one. Excellent. I saw your reaction to the Pentatonix version and I loved both of your reactions to this tune.
Beautiful heartfelt reaction. Yes, Mark wrote this and no one sings it like he does. You just feel the spirit of the Christ Child coming throughout the lyrics. Thank you again, and Merry Christmas ❤
I've never heard this group before, this is an absolutely gorgeous cover of this song. The harmonies are stunning.Loved your reaction to this amazing song❤❤❤
Buddy Greene (born October 30, 1953) [1] is an American singer, songwriter, guitar player and harmonica player. Most of his recordings consist of gospel music with a distinctly Southern gospel flavor. Much of his music is influenced by country music and bluegrass music. Greene grew up in Macon, Georgia. He has written the music for many songs and also co-wrote the Christmas song "Mary, Did You Know?" with Mark Lowry; Greene also wrote "Recovering Pharisee" recorded by Del McCoury, and "He Is" recorded by Ashley Cleveland. Many consider him a harmonica legend, and once played a classical harmonica medley at Carnegie Hall.
Viking, thank you for these Christmas songs. They definitely catch the spirit of the season. This song captures so perfectly the reason for the coming of the Prince of Peace. Beautiful and stirring --- penetrating into the soul.
Yes..Mark Lowry wrote the lyrics and Buddy Greene the melody. Mark has an amazing voice and sang for years with the Gaither Vocal Band. He's funnier then heck too ! 😊 I love this version so much, ny favorite in fact . I've heard and sang this song so many times. Great reaction Viking!
I love Pentatonix. I always have… this version? With the original songwriter? He is a good friend and fellow singer in a gospel group with David Phelps. David Phelps has very few peers.. he is that good. MS has really hurt Mark’s body, but he said, thank God that he can still sing towards the Lord because his voice is still good.
Mark and the Gaither Vocal Band bring such chills and goosebumps with their crescendo and harmonies on "lamb". And emotional tears. Thank you for this reaction.
I love Mark Lowrys voice and my 1st time hearing Voctave and thus is absolutely beautiful and my fave song to listen to at Christmas...love your reactions!
In your reaction to Mary did you know, you talked about breath control. I want to suggest another song with them. Here they show both breath control and perfection. Notice how everyone in the choir is looking at the man singing the lead part. Merry Christmas from Sweden! ✨🎄✨ Search for: O Come, All Ye Faithful - Voctave
Yes, Mark Lowry wrote the Lyrics and Buddy Green wrote the music. th-cam.com/video/smt3kkHHNO0/w-d-xo.html Here he's talking about the story behind the song.
First I got to know the version by Pentatonix and I was curious what else it could sound like. Even though I can't relate to the lyrics, I really like the vocals and the interpretation.
Hello. Another very beautiful song you should react to if you haven't already is Breath of Heaven by Amy Grant. Just as beautiful as this one. I get filled with so much emotion every time I hear it.
Even though Mark is going against one of my pet peeves, he does a great job in this. My pet peeve is, the words to the song are : Mary Did You Know It's not supposed to be : Mary did Jew know. I guess it's because it's a peeve that my vocal coach used to have
Mark Lowry is a phenomenal singer! You reacted to David Phelps singing O Holy night with the amazing pianist Anthony Burger. That same concert, Mark performs Mary did you know, with David Phelps and Guy penrod singing backup with Anthony playing piano. th-cam.com/video/tbOP2iE-YII/w-d-xo.htmlsi=lM0TK4Ly0RAVbrC2

That was incredible! I agree with you, what an honor to be able to sing with the composer!💜💜💜

All the singers harmonize so well together.
Thank you Viking for this beautiful moment.

If you like that, try ….oh come all ye faithful by the same another show stopper
I think those high notes would be "whistle" register
Chris Klafford with Mary did you know please react to him. Swedish amazing singer😍

React to Mark Lowry's friend David Phelps "O Holy Night" green sweater version.
I did that one last year and it was amazing ;)
