I know this is a joke but where I live a bridge way delayed for two years (took five years all together to finish) because of crab spawning/nesting areas
Honestly closed islands forces the player to explore the current area instead of running away and getting lost. It gave the games character and without it they feel barren and empty. Such as gta 5 feels only like a giant island in the middle of nowhere vs a community of islands.
I’m glad that I ain’t the only one thinking that. The bridges or excuses of bridges being closed until a certain event allows us a part of the map to be unlocked and when the storyline gets closer to the conclusion, the whole map is open to explore.

I remember firing up GTA 3 every day for years as a kid and being disappointed the bridge still wasn’t open. I didn’t know you had to beat the missions to open it.
I find this interesting because whenever I hear the radio stations they say things like, all bridges have closed down, like in San Andreas the bridges were closed down due to an earthquake, and and Vice cities bridge were closed down due to a hurricane storm, just like in vice city stories, also due to a hurricane though.
I always loved hearing the sarcastic and satirical commentary on the radio in GTA games about not only the in-game events but also background environment. In the HD universe you can even online news paper articles reporting on missions you complete in the story, which I felt was pretty cool
That’s pretty cool. In GTA V on bleeter, people are talking about mercenaries that tried to shot down a crop duster, a sinking ship in LS Port and shooting sounds from Michael’s house and more and more. Nice detail
A very interesting and informative video on a very underrated topic of lore on the games. I always loved that each time bridges were closed in the game, it also had an in game explanation for the closure, Which I think really brings the world to life for what is essentially a practical, gameplay progression restriction.
What about the elevator bridge in Liberty City and the ferries? Well, the ferries were on a strike, because the workers were worried they may lose their jobs once the Callahan Bridge opens. The elevator bridge was also closed by the striking workers, who were worried they may lose their jobs because of the planned tunnel extension. In GTA III, the tunnels were obviously yet to be finished at the start of the game, while the elevator bridge's lifting mechanism reportedly broke down.
Hello there! Yes, we excluded Shoreside Lift Bridge and the ferries and here's why.. Our main goal was to present the most important objects when it comes to crossing other islands. Since we included Porter Tunnel (by the way in some way related to the ferries) or Callahan Bridge, there was a lot of talking about union strikes in 1998. So we felt that it's not necessary to put Shoreside Lift Bridge since it was related to strikes as well. And besides there's not much to tell here.. maybe except radio announcements. But we hope you enjoyed episode nevertheless 🙂
I like to think of the bridges as "difficulty gates", just as you can only have a maximum of 4 stars at the beginning of the game. Bridges eventually open and you can reach 5, and eventually, 6 once you progress further enough into the game (harder missions, etc, etc)
@@jdavis6646 at the beginning of the games, you can only acquire up to 4 wanted stars (the point where the police choppers are all over you), as well as the other locations (such as Las Venturas and San Fierro in GTA San Andreas) being locked until you progress further into the story. Accessing these locked locations early, via cheats or exploits, causes you to instantly gain 4 wanted stars. As you progress through the story and the locations open up, you'll be able to earn up to 5 stars wanted level (Military Intervention) and 6 stars wanted level (Tanks everywhere)
Just looking at the thumbnail alone, I already have an answer to that question. The bridges were originally blocked because Rockstar had a thing where they wanted their playerbase to play through the story before getting the chance to explore the map. A method Rockstar abandoned partly in GTA V. I say partly because yes we have access to the entire map but we have to explore the map to open it up in the pause menu, if that made sense.
in gta sa tempenny might also be also be a cause as cj recives a call from hermandez after a few missions telling him that Tempenny said not to leave los santos, which might also be the cause of the 4 star wanted level if we leave
From a game design standpoint, It was likely to treat each area of the map as a "unlockable area". It encouraged players to do missions in a organic way. Same for weapons, Gta3 starts off with just a bat and pistol, then as you do more missions you unlock the uzi, sniper, rocket launcher and M16
Also to note about the tunnels in GTA 3 leading to the upstate, Rockstar created them to so players felt like there was more to explore in the map. It gave the illusion that, players were not cut off from the outside world, but could not access it due to having to solve problems in Liberty City. Also, the other GTA maps like Vice City, Modern Liberty CIty, and San Andreas are attached to the mainland. Rockstar did not want to actually show how they were connected because it would make the map look bad. And, also because in these maps, they wanted the player to fully immerse themselves in the games map. Some players also believe that it gave maps the feeling of loneliness, being cut off from the outside world.
@@badbread1579 Liberty City in GTA 4 would have been connected to the mainland US via Alderney. San Andreas in GTA 5 would have been connected on the eastern side of the map. In GTA 5, Lester mentions that they are in Southern San Andreas and that the water north of Paleto Bay is actually a river. You can see evidence of this by going to the eastern side of San Andreas and looking at how unnatural the coast looks. Other reasons why we don't see the mainland on these games, tech limitations, space for the game, and like I mention above, to have a better esthetic when playing. They really wanted to take advantage of the whole idea that Americans only focus on their part of the country only and no one else.
I always liked how the worlds would open up, and usually they would make it make sense. Like how in Vice City there was a hurricane watch thing going on inbound! Good stuff!
To be honest, this will be one of the things I'll miss in game, specifically GTA. It's just a guilty pleasure I have with progression, just feels rewarding the first time actually having to work to explore a new area. That and consequential if you did want to go over the boundaries to get a 'sneak peak' with a high wanted level. I'm doubting future installments will include any of this.
I always taught why the bridge is blocked in GTA Vice City! And then once i completed the Military mission the bridge got unlocked and made me more love into that game because of that!
Gta San Andreas is my favorite because I managed to complete all available side activities in the locked territories with a constant 4 star wanted level like collectibles and side missions.
Too bad that the games then didn't have it where when you crash, it sends u flying through the windshield sending you like 20 ft ahead. With that the player could go over the barrier.
I kinda wish roads like the upstate tunnel of liberty city existed in the other GTA games, It sort of has the mystery and curious feeling of wanting to know what's behind them
In the beta version of GTA 4, they were going to include a part of the Upstate, which wouldve included a tunnel to drive through to get there. It was cut though, because the developers thought it was weird having a wooded area and then off 1 mile away, was the hustle and bustle of Liberty City.
I think the game radio explains the logical reason IN GAME for it GTA: III callahan bridge is in disrepair, porter tunnel is constructed GTA: VC Hurricane warning GTA: SA corrupted Tempenny closed them bridges
6:05 a lot of people are also not aware but in vice city the hurricane DOES ACTUALLY COME. as in the games code, one of the weather patterns is under the name "hurricane." it is how ever just a very heavy rain storm and wind. I do not remember if it comes in vcs aswell but i assume no.
Let's not forget GTA, you have a bridge that is "being worked on" until you progress to a certain point in the game. Or you could just use a penetrator and drive over it at full speed. Then there is using a tank and it's missiles to do the same after you have made the first jump and you steal the tank of course.
There's no other video game series out that goes into so much background lore as the GTA games. This helps with immersion of the game and one of the many reasons why no other series comes close...
I actually loved this feature, it always felt amazing when you unlock new part of the map, and I like how there is always a reason why the bridges are closed (hurricane, earthquake etc.) I missed this feature in GTA V. Having the whole map open from the beginning felt overwhelming and unrewarding
However. It may be bigger but GTA V feels "smaller" since you only have two official areas, maybe 3 "cities" but they feel too small. Sandy Shores and Paleto Bay feel more like towns than actual "cities". Only so much one can explore there. Sure we also have Mount Chiliad but again, isn't a place I'd really visit
@@carlosdasilva2409 I never liked maps in GTA IV or V exactly because they felt big but empty. While in GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas every area had something to do, especially if you are trying to complete them 100%
@@MarkoVuckovic32 Exactly. To this day I still find entertaining to boot up San Andreas and have some fun around the map. Whether it is unleashing chaos, exploring or just wandering aimlessly until I find something that catches my eye. GTA IV feels a little "empty" on certain areas but free roam is still entertaining. GTA V however...I just get bored of it. It's not like there is much to do despite the secondary missions. Heck, even collectibles feel like they give mediocre rewards. The "alien" buggy looks odd and cool but I don't see it as a proper reward, the notes give you I think it was 10 bucks and the nuclear waste is the most "rewarding" in terms of money (but I don't remember if the quest alone is enough to recover the money spent on the dock). Back in San Andreas we unlocked cars for doing certain secondary quests, free amo/weapons for certain collectibles, heck. 100%ing the game gave you a frickin' tank and a hydra (things you can access more easily in GTA V so eh). I didn't even bother 100% GTA V, so I don't know if it's even worth it. Don't get me wrong, the story is good, the game isn't bad at all. It just doesn't feel like it is worth completing EVERYTHING from it haha
I also liked how they blocked it but still let you get over there through tricky ways, it makes it exciting getting over there when you normally can’t do it, especially when it gives you stars and the cops chase you. It’s good that they let you get there another way and didn’t just add a full invisible barrier to not let you get there
In addition to spoiling new areas too soon, it keeps your focus in the areas where missions are. Also, even if you get to a new area particularly in San Andreas, though you can enter some places there is nothing to do you cant buy safe houses there. Unless you use a no wanted level cheat, you cant explore without the police going after you.
Blocked bridges to new areas of the map is just there to give a message to the player, to complete the story before progressing. It is to block access until you progress the story.
🤔 idk did you know in the movie the dark knight rises, the Batman movie, the villain Bane also destroys all the bridges in Gotham city. It seems like in fictional version of NYC the bridges are always getting destroyed.
@@cdthree3805 Yea, but in game design theory, the game designers design what should happen, so we cannot overwrite the story just because we like to, we just have to roll with the punches and deal with it, lol. Also Grand Theft Auto series isn't about Batman, so it would make sense not to be about Batman. That is also a good point. The thing is, if you want Batman, go play PS1 games Batman & Robin or Gotham City Racer. Then tell me if you enjoy Batman again. You might or you won't. 😹 I believe Grand Theft Auto should follow their original story which has a formula that works, breaking from that game formula will just lead to strange results in some cases maybe not all the time, but it's important not to change the fabric of the game too much to preserve the game's identity and vibe.

If I recall correctly, Upstate Liberty *was* meant to be in GTA3 and 4, but for GTA3’s case, it was scrapped because consoles couldn’t handle a huge map and because of the time crunch, and in GTA4, Upstate Liberty was scrapped simply because the developers wanted to make the game more compact to have a fully fleshed out city and story, and not worry so much about the size of the game.
If I was rockstar games, I could’ve saved a beta map of upstate liberty so players deserve a countryside road trip to explore. Maybe even having some missions for Claude set after the main storyline where he is hunted down by every gang he pissed off from the favors and missions of gang leaders. It would be amazing to see Claude working for the Zaibatsu Corporation like he did for gta 2. @@elperrodelautumo7511 Maybe he flees Liberty with Maria after Shoreside Vale and has to work with Zaibatsu or CJ or someone to escape upstate, maybe even return to San Fierro.
Let's not forget about the LC Elevator Bridge in GTA 3 and LCS, For LCS, The strikers were still continuing thier blockage in parts of the city, because of this, the Elevator Bridge connecting Staunton Island and shoreside Vale had been closed, and for GTA 3, the elevator bridge's mechanism had broke. And it took a while to get it repaired.
In GTA: LCS, Shoreside Vale became accessible after completing the mission “Love on the Rocks,” where Salvatore Leone was arrested and imprisoned in Pike Creek for his involvement with Donald Love and his crime connections with the Leones, resulting his disqualification of his mayoral election to Miles O’Donovan. O’Donovan immediately became as the new mayor of Liberty City and officially announced the end of the workers’ strike and continued the construction of the Portland exit of the Porter Road Tunnel.

I was 9 years old back then in 2012, I remember getting stuck at the infamous "Wrong Side of Tracks" mission so I was just fuckin' around with the cheats. Had no internet access back then so I was just trying out cheats give by my friends at school on an unsaved game file. Activated cheat ROCKETMAN and it was my first time using the jetpack in Gta San Andreas lol I remember flying all the way to San Fierro with 4 star police on my tail and the first time I saw China Town and the San Fierro tram my mind just got blown out, I had no idea there was this much further to the game lol. Got killed immediately as soon as I landed thanks to the cops (who also looked different to Los Santos cops so that also had me bamboozled lol) but this whole accidental fuckin' around with cheats gave me a huge boost to sit my ass down and complete that god awful mission so that I could discover rest of the map. The desert with creepy UFO vibes, little villages underneath the mount Chilliad and the woods around them were my favourite places to traverse through while listening to KRose in my Yosemite pickup truck that I used to drive in-game. God I loved this game's map, played every GTA except V yet but I do hope V's map is also as much fun to explore, especially the wilderness since they got wild animals in GTA V.
I hope GTA 6 will feature more than just one big city I am all for two huge cities and a big countryside connecting them so you really feel like you are traveling
Yeah the way they structured the map for San Andreas was really nice. In reality the map was much smaller than Los Santos of gta 5 but it still felt huge due to how all the regions were seperated
GTA 6 should be more than a fictionalized vice city.. it should also include fictionalized versions of other Florida cities like Tallahassee, Orlando or Pensacola. Similar to older games, they should be connected by a bridge that is unlocked until you finish a certain mission
I found a way around the closed bridges in GTA Vice City, after seeing an online video. Sure enough it worked and I got all of the hidden packages early, even bought that big condo with the helicopter on top in Downtown. That Vice City News Chopper on top of that building downtown is a big help in gathering out of reach packages.
I’d say GTA 5 is the only game where players can roam the entire map from the get-go without penalty or blockage (excluding Fort Zancudo and LSIA, of course)

Nice detail
There's even worse than closed bridges ; an open area where enemies spawn out of thin air and an invisible sniper eventually shoots you down

I loved the ferries
Hello there! Yes, we excluded Shoreside Lift Bridge and the ferries and here's why.. Our main goal was to present the most important objects when it comes to crossing other islands. Since we included Porter Tunnel (by the way in some way related to the ferries) or Callahan Bridge, there was a lot of talking about union strikes in 1998. So we felt that it's not necessary to put Shoreside Lift Bridge since it was related to strikes as well. And besides there's not much to tell here.. maybe except radio announcements. But we hope you enjoyed episode nevertheless 🙂
Truly 3d liberty city had some major budget cuts there during late 90s and early 2000s. To have the bridges being closed down
I like to think of the bridges as "difficulty gates", just as you can only have a maximum of 4 stars at the beginning of the game. Bridges eventually open and you can reach 5, and eventually, 6 once you progress further enough into the game (harder missions, etc, etc)
Im lost?
Yeah sure it is also a good reason. However we we want show other reasons as well 😄
DING DING DING DING GOOD ANSWER MIHAI
That is the reason. The bridges were closed in-game for CJ specifically because Tenpenny didn't want him to leave town.
i never knew the collapsed construction was caused by the earthquake. Good detail
Thank You!
Where are this Maps connected to the mainland? Have they also tunnels or something, never saw something like this.
@@MisterMichaelVReyes Yea Gameplay reason is clear, i just was interested where they say ingame that it is connected.
Yeah if niko or Trevor wanted to they could drive to Las venturas or something but they need to fix all the problems that come in their way
The amount of quality and the way he talks about the stuff like this actually pretty interesting for such a small channel
I always liked how the worlds would open up, and usually they would make it make sense. Like how in Vice City there was a hurricane watch thing going on inbound! Good stuff!
They don't even block bridges like that in real life only in a game would they pull that BS
@@TitanicExpertJamesGrass I mean, yeah, I suppose so. 😅but at least there was somewhat of a reason as to why you couldn't go there. 😆
I actually really miss this set up of having a part of the city blocked off for a while, makes you look forward to it opening up
To be honest, this will be one of the things I'll miss in game, specifically GTA. It's just a guilty pleasure I have with progression, just feels rewarding the first time actually having to work to explore a new area. That and consequential if you did want to go over the boundaries to get a 'sneak peak' with a high wanted level. I'm doubting future installments will include any of this.
Damn bro. This channel has only 1 thousand subscribers? You seriously need more. I thought this would have like 100k! The quality is amazing!!
So uplifting words dude, thanks!
I always taught why the bridge is blocked in GTA Vice City! And then once i completed the Military mission the bridge got unlocked and made me more love into that game because of that!
When it becomes to dialogue and radio stations Rockstar has an immersive work!!
I still remember unlocking Manhattan in gta 4 that was sick

9:45 Roman in GTA IV litterally said why the bridges were closed
6:05 a lot of people are also not aware but in vice city the hurricane DOES ACTUALLY COME. as in the games code, one of the weather patterns is under the name "hurricane." it is how ever just a very heavy rain storm and wind. I do not remember if it comes in vcs aswell but i assume no.
Im so happy most youtubers still use the original games and not the new downgraded edition 🙏🙏🙏 super good video!
Original versions are just the best!
Let's not forget GTA, you have a bridge that is "being worked on" until you progress to a certain point in the game. Or you could just use a penetrator and drive over it at full speed.
Then there is using a tank and it's missiles to do the same after you have made the first jump and you steal the tank of course.
In Vice city, both hurricanes actually bypassed the state and the bridges reopened.
I like the detail in rockstar whole series they really put out alot of effort and fast adult swim shit.
@@carlosdasilva2409 I tried completing GTA V 100% but I didn't manage to get all collectibles since I got bored
@@MarkoVuckovic32 Then there is getting all missions completed as intended by the devs. Which I also gave up on since it became more stressful
That San Andreas music is still awesome till this day
I also liked how they blocked it but still let you get over there through tricky ways, it makes it exciting getting over there when you normally can’t do it, especially when it gives you stars and the cops chase you. It’s good that they let you get there another way and didn’t just add a full invisible barrier to not let you get there
We fully agree!
all fun an games til u made it to a hospital/respawn point and now have infinite 4-5 star loop.
I always liked when you went past barriers on bridges in GTa4 how you instantly got a 5 star wanted level...
helicopter or otherwise, yes! Plus running the toll both got stars.. but not in 5
In addition to spoiling new areas too soon, it keeps your focus in the areas where missions are.
😹
I believe Grand Theft Auto should follow their original story which has a formula that works, breaking from that game formula will just lead to strange results in some cases maybe not all the time, but it's important not to change the fabric of the game too much to preserve the game's identity and vibe.
@@cougar-town Bro a lot of writers, Hollywood and game creators are Freemasons. I don’t think you understand that. You think they’re just writing their own unique creations but a lot of them follow Masonic teachings. I loved that idea of limiting the player in the beginning, when I was a kid I was always looking for ways to escape the city, sometimes using a boat in the vice city or cheats, or a bug where u could jump fast with a motorcycle near the bridge it will spawn u on the bridge after the barricade, it was cool, also in san adreas taking the train and drive it fast to skip the barricades and using cheats, it was a really cool idea and it was fun for me when I was a kid I was just using passwords, create chaos and so on, I did not care about the missions or the plot.
I love the tie ins for different events etc making more depth to the gta verse

As well as some bikers and maybe have some plot points and plot holes filled up, even who leads the Leone family after Sals death.
@@elperrodelautumo7511 Maybe he flees Liberty with Maria after Shoreside Vale and has to work with Zaibatsu or CJ or someone to escape upstate, maybe even return to San Fierro.
The three era had the best lore tbh. I miss it and then the damn recent stuff with them makes me miss damn the old rockstar in general.
You kinda forgot the lift bridge between Staunton and Shorside that are broken due to malfunction. It’s working when Callahan is broken.
Because the developers want you to actually play the story and earn your access to the other parts of the map.

I was 9 years old back then in 2012, I remember getting stuck at the infamous "Wrong Side of Tracks" mission so I was just fuckin' around with the cheats. Had no internet access back then so I was just trying out cheats give by my friends at school on an unsaved game file. Activated cheat ROCKETMAN and it was my first time using the jetpack in Gta San Andreas lol
I remember flying all the way to San Fierro with 4 star police on my tail and the first time I saw China Town and the San Fierro tram my mind just got blown out, I had no idea there was this much further to the game lol.
I hope GTA 6 will feature more than just one big city
I am all for two huge cities and a big countryside connecting them so you really feel like you are traveling
Yes, however in the old gta games they do not put INVISIBLE SNIPERS to stop you from exploring a certain area of the map. *cough cough RDR2 cough*
2:05 "we believe that the presence of Roblox" i really need to do a check up on my ears
Once you reach the mission drive by you can freely explore
Because the devs know the players won't bother to play the main story so they wanted us to do it for now~ 😊
I knew somewhat about gta 4 because in the beginning, Roman mentions the bridges being out due to terrorists
I’d say GTA 5 is the only game where players can roam the entire map from the get-go without penalty or blockage (excluding Fort Zancudo and LSIA, of course)
and the jail
it was just to get you to do the missions to unlock different areas, mjust like GTA 2 you had to get so many points to get to the next district.
I like it. It gives you motivation to play forward. Unlocking is rewarding 😊
