Good video and good points. I happen to agree with everything you said, but there's something I want to build on. What I don't understand about the Internet (and, if I'm honest, about life in general) is why people can't seem to separate a) what's real from what's make believe, and 2) what's important from what's relatively trivial. These are essentially the same thing, except the former applies to shipping while the latter applies to things outside popular media. When it comes to shipping, you're absolutely right in that it gets toxic for absolutely no reason. I'm not a member of the FF fandom myself, I've never played those games, and the extent to my experience is the FF characters being present in Kingdom Hearts, so I had no idea of the animosity between Clerith and Cloti. I can't say I'm surprised, though, to hear that people sent death threats to the creators. Appalled? Yes. Disappointed? Yes. Ready to slap those people upside the head and remind them that none of it is real? Yes. Surprised? Not one bit. People get way too invested in their fandoms and decide to cause trouble for the heck of it if someone doesn't agree with their interpretation. My issue with it is that people who do that seem to forget that the media around which the fandoms revolve are all fiction. The characters aren't real, the events aren't real, but people get so invested in those fandoms that they might as well be real. Now, I have my fandoms, the ones I follow at a given time rotate on a monthly basis, and I have ships in each one. (I've recently rediscovered Digimon and I have four ships that revolve around the same three characters from the original series.) But it's all for fun! It's something to do to unwind from a stressful day at work. I can read my fanfiction, I can write it, I can watch TH-cam videos. I don't understand why some people don't have that same mindset. I love interpreting the media and sharing my interpretations (which my mother thinks is weird, but she wants media that is 30-60-minute stand-alones and I have to explain why no one wants that anymore, they want characters and stories they care about. Her response is "who cares?" Sorry, I digress.), but again, it's all for fun. The Internet has made it so easy for people to blur the line between reality and fiction. Why does it matter in the end which ship is canon and which isn't? Yes, the representation is nice, but ultimately, it's about people who aren't real and who aren't going to converse with you, so it's not worth getting that zealous. And it is zealotry, which I don't approve of in any form, from religion to media. And it's not just media either. I live in a state where football isn't just a sport, it's a way of life. To me, sports are about having fun and fostering friendly competition, strategy, and teamwork. Yes, you want to win, but that shouldn't be the point of playing. I'm a huge tennis fan and I keep coming back to Rafael Nadal saying, "Is only game, no?" after a tournament several years ago. That's a healthy attitude. But, in this state, football isn't a game and it isn't a sport, it's one step short of a religion. And I have heard news reports of people vandalizing cars and committing arson after their team loses a game. It's appalling. It's only a game! I think part of it is a generational thing. The generation before mine has this fanatical zeal for sports and is willing to force football on their sons, even though it can cause devastating physical injuries, mental health issues, and suicide. (Suicide rates among college athletes have doubled in the last 20 years partly due to the need to constantly keep performing and not getting the mental health care they need.) My generation has the same fanatical zeal, but we've transferred it from sports to popular media. I just don't understand why someone has to be that passionate about something that isn't real. Why can't shipping and fandoms be just fun? Because that's what they're meant to be in my opinion? Just a place to have fun and have a community of friends. But people just can't mind their own business, can they? Okay, off my soapbox.
A video like this was very much needed, but unfortunately, I don't think it's gonna be the last 😭 Also, regarding the whole "fans sending death threats to the Rebirth devs" situation, I'd like to shed a bit of light as someone who's semi in the FF7 fandom. There have, sadly, been a few times where someone created a fake Cloti account on Twitter to harass Nojima into killing off Aerith, purely to make the entire Cloti side of the fandom look bad (in fact, one of the people that did this recently wasn't even a Clerith, it was an insane Jessie stan that at this point, everyone in the FF7 fandom hates because he keeps finding new ways to harass literally anyone involved in the games to bring Jessie back to life or "give her the respect she deserves"). Of course, I'm not speaking for all Clotis because like all ship fandoms, there are a few bad apples. But from the circle I'm in, the Clotis that I've engaged with would never harass any of the devs and have always called out those fake accounts when they spring into existence. But yeah, the fact that this happens is proof that there are some folks that REALLY don't want Cloti to happen, and so they resort to some pretty despicable lows rather than minding their own damn business. Yeah, I know firsthand just how bad the war between Clotis and Cleriths have been in the past couple of years alone, and it gets pretty draining. But since you're an outside observer of the fandom, I felt like I should provide a bit of context for certain situations. And I agree, if Kingdom Hearts takes any particular wrong turns, it could turn into, what another fellow Soriku described it as, Cloti vs. Clerith 2.0 😞
Thanks for the context! Yeah unfortunately there’s always gonna be bad apples on either side, or people who just wanna to start stuff to make one side look bad. Still the fact that there were death threats sent, regardless of whether it was cloti shippers or people claiming to be them…is really sad. It just shows how crazy things can get and how some of these people prob need to touch some grass. 😂
personally the only reason why the ff7 fandom makes me angry today is that it accepted the remake as valid... they are all enthusiastic about the rebirth and I, who love the original, only feel great pain...😢
I fully agree with everything, I personally felt very bad a few years ago for not having seen my ship become canon (sasunaru) and I was very bad, but over time, the fanfics and the doujins I recovered XD now I'm back on the fix with soriku (which is one of my most historic ships) and I'm happy 💛 among other things, I'm one of those people who feel stomach ache if they see sokai images but I learned very quickly to make them disappear without arguing XD I like it hear you talk about these topics, thanks for these nice videos 🫂
Gonna be honest the 1st time i saw and played the 1st kingdom hearts game and seeing the characterway back in 2004 i just saw Riku and Sora talking and having their time together i smiled cause it felt like a shooting star in front of me and I just saw Kairi as a good friend trying to understamd both of em from different sides even if she doesn't say much and even if ship isnt canon it will forever be loved and live within our hearts
I really don't like the insinuation that the Soriku's are mentally ill, and then provide zero evidence for Sokai, like what? Give the point, not the ad hominin,
While I'm not big on writing romance itself in my fanfictions I always liked shipping and wondering how those 2 characters I ship would work together. Personally I find non canon ships to be the most interesting case since I'm already aware of the canon ships we have in media. Some ships I find to be super underrated and need more fan content of. Shipping is something I never take seriously and just see as a fun hobby
Say it louder for the people in the back, and while you're at it, you could also mention that talking about media with a queer lense is neither a threat to children, nor shoving anything down anyone's throats. Ugh this annoys me the most and is also what is probably the most wrong about shipping in fandom. Like, I've read several comments under Tennelle's Riku is Gay video that were like "stop sexualizing this" and I'm like "Wtf this is about feelings. You know being gay isn't something inherently sexual?" It annoys me so much that people treat heterosexual and homosexual romantic relationships like inherently different things when they're not. It's the same, especially when you just talk about feelings. It's two (or more) people in love, and the gender of one or more people involved doesn't matter in this. It's not sexualizing anything and not confusing children or manipulating them into being queer, which let's be real isn't possible. Only seeing straight people in media doesn't make queer kids straight so the opposite isn't possible either. And then there are also the people who are unnecessarily rude and call people like me names and delusional for even suggesting that Soriku Endgame might be possible. If people really think we're so wrong they can just let us "indulge in our delusions" and let us be disappointed when Sora and Kairi get together in the end. You know, instead of ruining other people's fun and acting like talking about SoRiku will actually make it happen or something and be angry about it. If they don't want to hear it they can just ignore it, they can scroll past a post and (like you said) block and mute people. It's really so much easier to just shut up and leave than be an asshole. Or if they just disagree and wanna debate, that's also possible - without insults. It's not like I'm not up for debate, it's just that we're probably not going to agree in the end, but that's doesn't have to be a bad thing. It's so frustrating that people want to be right and/or us to be wrong so much. I also guess it's always either homophobes or aggressive Sokais who don't want to live in a reality where Sokai isn't canon. And I would be lying if I said I couldn't understand that. I honestly don't know anymore why I shipped Sokai in the first place, but I know that I never wasted a thought about it since I've started shipping SoRiku. And it's not like I want to shit on Sokais. If this ship is important to someone I don't wanna take that away from them. I just don't know what they're in for at this point, because everything that could allude to a Sokai romance lies in the past and came before most of the things that are suggesting a Soriku romance being possible. Humans are so exhausting...
Thanks so much for your comment, I agree with everything you’ve said here! The part about “stop sexualizing this” actually reminds me of a long comment I received on my “Riku is the light” video. I’ve since blocked this person so the comment is gone, but they came in and tried to “umm actually” me. Incredibly condescending in their choice of words and kept telling me “being the light doesn’t = sexual attraction”. It was so odd to me because in that video..the point was to argue the evidence that Riku was the light in kh3…not a video where I try and argue that these two are oh so in love. It’s so weird to me that you can be like “Riku is the light” and people refuse to consider it cause they view it as a “ship thing” when it can exist regardless. Still though…even if I wanna argue two characters are in love…it doesn’t automatically mean anything sexual. At the end of the day KH revolves around Sora and Riku regardless of if it’s platonic or ends up romantic.
@@CocoaCatniptv That's really odd. I remember the video and I don't think you even remotely mentioned SoRiku in it. Like, what do these people think we want to happen between Sora and Riku? It's honestly so ridiculous and hypocritical! 😂 Also, people will say we should stop making everything about our pairing and at the same time ignore and deny anything that they associate with being even remotely romantic. Saying Riku is the light (which he is) does not have to mean anything. It's just a thing that is blatantly hinted at multiple times and the only thing that "goes against it" is Sora literally saying Kairi was the light. But people refuse to acknowledge weird stuff in KH and rather accept a statement that is obviously supposed to be frown into question (I mean Kairi literally comes in in a dutch angle and obscures the light), just so they can pretend it's "proof" of their own pairing. I mean, probably not everyone who denies Riku being the light is also a Sokai, but I don't know why else you would want to deny it in the first place, except for purely homophobic reasons maybe.
@@oras7745 I honestly had to go back and re-watch my video cause I was like “but I don’t mention shipping though?”. Like I was really hoping that even non shippers would watch my video and be like “wow! There is evidence that the light was Riku! Maybe Sora is wrong and there’s something weird here!” Cause like…it is just straight up weird how he calls the light Riku and then people fully believe it’s Kairi just cause Sora said so later. 😂 Still…even if I did bring up shipping…like that’s my right. You can click away and move on…or politely disagree. Like…why is it so hard for people to be respectful?
@@CocoaCatniptvYeah, it's obviously something that is supposed to be thrown into question and it is so baffling to me that poeple don't want to acknowledge such things, apparantly just because of the possible implications it would have. Like, I don't know why else poeple would want to deny that Riku is the light, except for the reason that it could imply romantic feelings from Sora's end and therefore possibly contradict feelings for Kairi. And then imagine you're just talking about Riku being the light, but people immediately associate that with you claiming Sora has romantic feelings for Riku... who is making this about shipping again? I mean, it's not like there isn't some overlap in people who are entertaining the idea and people who ship SoRiku, but that's because we are mostly the only people who are even willing to entertain the idea and not because we ship SoRiku and want to see something here. I'm pretty sure there are also people who don't ship SoRiku (maybe even shop Sokai??) who can also entertain the idea of Riku being the light. Because it doesn't HAVE to mean anything. But yeah, some people get really butthurt when it's about gay ships. It's not like we're harming anyone by discussing themes and possibilities. But tbf people get butthurt over a lot of things, it's really exhausting a lot of the time.
