Just received mine from Australia to Canada, patiently waited for it, and I must say I'm very happy with it so far. Just installed it today with a Fluval breeder box. I wish I could insert a pic here.
Blake, received my collectors today. They look great! Can't wait to try them out. Very well designed and thought out. Will keep you posted. Thanks again! Gerard
Recieved my egg collector in the mail yesterday. Got it setup ttoday after work. The assembly with my external hatchery box Went very easily. If this works out for me ill be thrilled, because ive had very limited success with my egg scattering fish. Thanks a ton! Ill keep you updated. 😊
@@Jo-ec4fe I'm clearly not using it correctly... I placed it in a 20 gallon tank that was heavily planted already. I only have 4 white cloud mountain minnows, bladder snails, scuds, and some blue dream shrimp in there. The minnows don't seem very interested in the egg collector as they are busy darting around in the plants most of the time, but the shrimp have got a secret colony going on in the underside of the egg collector, and they think it's pretty great! My hatchery box seems to only collect scuds. 😁 I am sure I could place it in a smaller barren tank with a clump of moss in the egg collector, and only my target species, and it would work great. I am just a bit daft... 🤣
I waited 24 hours before watching this because I figured as soon as I watched this I would have an extended DIY job on my hands. I made something already after an early video of yours but was running the eggs into an internally mounted Ziss breeding box. I am not sure if I had to much air running and was straining the eggs out through the sides of the ziss breeding box or what . I had no still water area for day old fry . As I retired guy I have the time to play around with plastic funnels and air lift tubes etc. . Thanks for the tips on a still water area for newly hatch fry. It’s great Fishman follows you Blake. Keep up the good work mate.
Great video mate and thanks for the credit. Very neat little solution you’ve settled on. That’s the fun bit about the hobby, just keep tweaking the print until you get it right. Just had a thought. You could also have the riser tube go into a floating breeder box if you didn’t have an external one. That’s what I do because I have lids on our tanks.
Hey Blake! Great collector. Loved hearing the process of your design! One of these days I will have to get into 3D printing. For now I will stick with acrylic DIY. Very surprised to hear about how hard it is to get acrylic in Australia.
Hey mate - you were awesome enough to share your stl with me back in sept and I edited it a bit and attached it to a small breeder box as well :D Totally appreciate you don't want to share the stls anymore because of the effort you've put in - real top effort. I love that you've designed it to fit a screw in elbow. I designed 3d printed elbow and tube to squeeze into a piece of plastic bunnings tube and attach the airline, but the design you've come up with is heaps better. Thanks for your help and advice. Your videos have been super helpful!!!
@@BlakesAquatics LOL, yea, I have the feature enabled as well, but I don't know if anyone has ever noticed it. But I thought, well, let's see how it works. It was fairly simple and easy. I think your channel is certainly worth it.
Would definitely be worth the wait to have one shipped to Los Angeles! Been wanting to start this breeding project for a bit and this seems like a game changer in the making!
Saving the cpd population one print at a time, looks great man, youve done a fantastic job. Happy to see our little community inspiring such a great solution for the hobby too.
Can't wait, hope I can get it out here in California. I keep breeding CPDs by removing the parent fish after a week but this would seem to produce many more fish than 10 to 30 per breeding and be less traumatic for the parents. I also have dwarf emerald rasboras that breed regularly.
Hi Blake, just put an order in for your egg collector. I have been following your stages of design for some time. I appreciate all the time invested into the design and development. I am anxious to try it out. On my channel I regularly breed egg scatterers as well. I do wish to try this device with my glo-light danios and CPDs. I especially appreciate the tip with the baffles. I can see how that would make a big difference.
Wow these are super cool! This makes me want to start dabbling into a little more involved fish breeding someday. I've had so much fun raising a few clusters of mystery snails and molly fry now I wonder what else I can try that's a bit more challenging. It's almost addicting seeing the first tiny babies and watching them grow lol. I like to trade mine back to my local fish store. 😊
I just LOVE this egg collector! Been looking for ages for a thing like this. Tried ordering two, but they won't ship to the Netherlands. I just sent you an email! Would love 2!
Looks like something that I may wanna try with my own fish! Only questions I can muster is are hatchery boxes sold separately, as are extra pieces (hoses, plastic pipe, etc.) to attach to said hatch box? Im planning to use a srandard 10 gallon to breed some white cloud minnows and danios and possibly neon tetras. Other than that, love the videos, dude!
Thanks mate, I added an updated video recently which may clarify a few things but i include the black poly pipe and fittings, not the hatchery box. Nothing else is required apart from that. Thanks
@BlakesAquatics Ah, cool beans. I'll be sure to review it soon. Thanks for the update. And while I'm not quite necessarily in the aquarium hobby like I was back when I was a kid, I've really been all about low-tech concepts such as mini ponds and such. In any case, a product such as yours may be what Immlooking for to help increase numbers in my own personal stock. In any case, thanks again, man!
@@BlakesAquatics i do the same but different. I let them grow in there, but every few weeks move them all out to a bigger growout before they start to eat the eggs and new fry
Great idea. Maybe you could upload the stl to a local printing company for the guys that live outside Australia to save shipping costs, tax and customs? In Etsy it is 25€ to Germany for shipping and tax and still I may would have to pay for customs.
Maybe I am a control freak but to be honest the more hands the files pass through the more risk of something going wrong for me. With 1 harvest of a clutch of eggs from emerald rasboras, galaxy rasboras or many other species $100s of dollars can be made so for me it should be easily justified.
Great design! I'm surprised the model doesn't float since it's made from plastic. Does connecting it to the hang on box's tube help stop it from floating?
Yes, also it is 100% infill meaning no air gaps between the walls so even if it wasnt it would sink as long as there arent any bubbles trapped somewhere
I just purchased two...question...how often do you find that you have to clean the egg harvester of mulm/ debris? Thanks btw...looking forward to giving them a shot!
Hi mate mine is branded aqua manta, large size but i have made 100s and never heard of a brand that doesnt fit. I also have a few other brands in operation. Pisces, fluval maybe but I cant remember.
Can I use your breeding box, when I put a dividing glass in my tank so that the eggs float to the other department? Is there anything else that I would need besides the stuff in your set? What diameter in millimeters should the whole in the dividing glass be so that your pipe fits?
Hi mate, yes that can definifely be done and I have seen it done. To do that you connect the box directly to the glass and then have the uplift as more of an outlet on the opposite side to the box. Best bet would be to receive it and then drill the holes accordingly
@@BlakesAquaticsthat sounds like a plan. My breeding tank is a bit bigger and I think it would be better to divide it instead of using a Breeder box. Thanks, mate.
Random thought while watching your video if you ever decided to make a big bulky one, you could flat pack it and send a manual how to put it together with a little tube of silicone (not included) hehe
Would you close the exit of the breeding box with a sponge to forbid the baby cpd to swim back to the tank? I fear that it gets dense and the box overflows
Hey i just purchase your device, arrived quick to Canada and put together in 10seconds. What do you recommend for the moss and positioning of the device? Should i have direct light over spawning area or should be be blocked by floaters? I have live plants and unsure how best to attract them to this exact spot? I have CPD and Emerald Rasboras. I am fairly limited to where to put my breeder box so trying optimize what i can. (unfortunately its a planted tank and not a dedicated breeder tank)
Cpd and emeralds in the same tank? Of so they can interbreed so I wouldnt recommend hatching any of the fry. Floaters or light i dont find to matter and just simple java moss works best i find.
@@BlakesAquatics Great point, i remember finding out CPD are called Galaxy Rasboras and didnt make the connection until you mentioned it. Will pull them out into a separate tank. They dont really go near the box yet :( may just need to use in a dedicated breeder tank with no other plants/moss except for the device.
@@porchemasi i have done it before with other plants and decorations, it can still work but definitely doesnt yield as many fry. Just give them a few days to get used to something new in the environment and they should settle into it
