I think the Alchemist thrives when you play as an unhinged chaos goblin. While others research tomes or consult with divinity, you mix together some weird crap you left out overnight and achieve the same result, that’s hilarious. You can cast Haste, you just know that’s your guy injecting a teammate with something. You can be an unhinged support and I love that
I literally am playing with this character at my friend's table. She originally didn't even had a name, she was The Goblin and she's the kind of character that likes F'd up stuff but don't like what'd be normal (like, she loves sewer smell but dislikes flowers')
My backup character for a game is like this. Yes haste is untested who knows what that would get you banned from the Olympics, but he hasn't seen any horrible side effects yet soooooo
I have a goblin who also plays like this, Is his name Thatch and His interest lies in "fun". this means creating horrific concoctions and throwing them at people
For me I actually added one of elder scrolls features to my character for flavor. Instead of my character doing alchemical experimentation to find the recipes. He’s just a dwarf who uses his natural fortitude to munch down on every ingredient he finds to discover how to make potions. It’s really fun getting to describe the disgusting mash/paste that I make in mortar and pestle before chowing down in the middle of the night.
Okay, but peace cleric + alchemist is legit. +3d4 to saves will trivialize a lot of encounters, and the ability to get +20ft of moment from potions and spells early on makes their Channel Divinity even more effective.
Was recently a war forged armourer artificer and ended up being the final boss of an evil campaign (my team turned I stayed good) and they were struggling to bring me down
The Alchemist does feel a bit underwhelming on its own, but I've found 2 builds that make great use of it: 1. Add 2+ levels of Barbarian so you can blow your spell slots on elixirs, then chug, rage, and go nuts with your non-concentration effects. 2. Mix in Mutant Bloodhunter (if your table allows it) to be the ultimate mad scientist and scoop up weapon and armor proficiency.
One of my current characters is an Alchemist. Is it the strongest or "best" Artificer subclass? No. Not by a long shot. But I like it, and it gave me a reason to take Acid Splash for once. We homebrewed the Elixirs so that once you'd rolled one of everything on their tavle, you could choose which ones to make at all times. We also made it so you can enhance your elixirs with the spell slot you would've used to create it in the first place. Also, having a number of elixirs equal to half your proficiency bonus rounded up gets the ball rolling a little quicker.
My favorite character I've roleplayed as was definitely the alchemist halfling who got his award winning roses stomped on by a goblin raid party and decided to blow up the mountain the goblins live at for revenge
Yay finally the one I've been voting for. I've always thought a cool fix for the Alchemist is to expand and give extra uses of their create magic item exclusively to make potions. Limit it by saying each potion only lasts till the end of a long rest and by having a level prerequisite to make potions of certain rarities.
Level pre-req? I think i'd personally go more for expensive and/or rare ingredients ... level requirements feel like something from a video game; somewhat counter-intuitive to the TTRPG concept unless you play extra crunchy at your table- which is fine if that's how you all like to roll... 'just sayin'. ;) Aside from that though i too believe with a small bit of working with your player(s) to tweak the alchemist, it could be just as solid as the other sub-class choices imho.
I have an alchemist npc who is the magic tattoo artist. I role play the potions and elixirs as ink components. Since they're not out adventuring they have stock piles of elixirs on standby. Can be used as ink or sold wholesale when necessary for extra cash.
9:21 Only the free Elixirs from the long rest are random, when you expend a spell slot to get more they are not random you just get to pick your elixir type from the table.
It’s like, Trickery Domain took over and tried to make a joke about Alchemist being the video before jumping in, but they were too late to commit to the bit. EDIT: Very nice.
6:53 One little thing, since production of items is measured in how much money is used (base 25GP) per 8 hour work day, a ability that halves the time and quarters the cost actually interacts with each other to make a crafting time 1/8 of what it was for uncommon or common magic items essential making mass production easy.
I have two ideas as to how you can improve the alchemist with multiclassing 1) the mad scientist. You multiclass into sorcerer. Even if metamagic doesn't affect potions, the description says you can expand one spell slot to get them back. And the sorcerer has a lot of spell slots with not enough spells to use them with 2) the steroid user. Multiclass into a barbarian. You can't cast spells when you rage but you can drink potions. So you basically just convert all your spells into potions and use them while in rage. Especially the ones that give you extra ac or extra speed
I normally don't post before watching the video, but thank you 🙏🏼 I'm playing a pirate wood elf, rogue/alchemist for my very first campaign, and I always enjoy your videos. Keep it up 🔥🔥🔥
An EXTREMELY common misunderstanding but spell storing item is limited to the Artificer's (class) spell list, not an Artificer spell you can cast (class+subclass) that has a one Action cast time. I've seen people try and put Shield or Absorb Elements in there lol, but some DMs are cool with it. The spell you put in is at its lowest level. Putting in Continual Flame in it bypasses the material component, as it produces the spells effect instead of casting the spell.
I made a warforged envoy alchemist called ‘Mr Pennyworth’. With alchemical supplies built into him. His backstory was that he was created to serve drinks at his masters many social gatherings, and act as a butler. Eventually he was given his freedom and turned his craft into making potions. He is dressed and acts like a British butler and uses his shield like a drinks serving tray. 😂
7:44 You also ignore level requirements, so you're using that Holy Avenger as effectively as a paladin 3 levels ahead of you. 8:13 _🎼Father of toxic gas and chemical warfare🎵_
You know if you combine this with the order of the mutant blood hunter you can flavor it as a jekyll and hyde style character that has a side gig as a potion seller
Thought of using this subclass with the chef feat on a Lizardfolk character with the driving motivation of creating edible food from every single thing in the world, basically dungeon meshi mixed with some Hannibal
Yeah I played this the dm and removed the randomness added a thrown property to them with spicy abilities plus also a barbarian it was fun accidently became the origin of werewolves in the dm Champaign it was fun
I was thinking of a concept for an alchemist who’s main gimmick is using Will o wisps for the main reagent for their magic. And not just the spirits, but the wisps created by the real world phenomena of phosphine gas made from decay of matter in bayous. He would start out using decayed plants to harvest the phosphoric acid to fuel various amounts of spells, like splashing enemies with the raw acid for acid splash, or igniting the bottled gas in flaming sphere. But as his magic progresses (around restorative reagent) he would learn how to make glass by smelting the phosphorus pentoxide in his concoctions with intense heat. This would lead to him creating magically enhanced phosphorus glass that not only contains the experimental tonic, but also reforms into a temporary shield around the user for the temp hp. And that’s not all either. The glass also acts as the basis for the amplified damage of acid, necrotic, and flame spells. For example, he creates glass arrows to fling at targets dripping with acid. He focuses the glass to create a chemical laser for ray of sickness. He can create a flaming blade using the glass. But this is but a concept. I’m trying to find a way to put this into play.
I played a ex-hag Hexblood Alchemist the same day Tasha's released. It was very fun but yeah it has some problems. I don't love the fact the potions rely on rng. The potions aren't that strong to warrant that kind of nerf. My dungeon master let me pick my Potions And that made the subclass feel a lot better
I think D&D daily had a cool Alchemist build. Alchemists are the only artificers that can get both booming blade (artificer cantrip) and flaming sphere. If you use your infusions on defense, you can cast flaming sphere right behind your opponent, then move up and cast booming blade. If they stay, fire damage. If they move, thunder damage. A bit niche, but surprisingly effective. Since alchemists dont get extra attack, making the most of your one attack is important.
Some Alchemist tips n tricks Use Haste and/or Homunculus to administer Elixirs across the battlefield. FaerieFire(SpellStoringItem+Creature) + Bless Elixir + Bless(FeyTouched,or Cleric/Paladin party member) Means you and your allies aren't gonna miss and have a better chance of landing Crits and avoiding Nat 1s. Alter Self Elixir + Longtooth Shifter (+FaerieFire for Accuracy) Gives you effectively two +1 attacks, Action/BonusAction. It gets better once you can make the Gauntlets of Ogre Power or Belt of Hill Giant Strength. Alchemy Jug(Focus) + Spell Storing item(Cure Wounds) Acts like a potion dispenser and is cool. Also it saves spell slots.
I have a goofy plasmoid Alchemist as a back and he'll be so much fun to play, given 16 of his 25 total spells will at least partly include some sort of chemical mix of his. I mean, he hasnt encountered any horrible side effects yet. Also, the thought of injecting who knows what into someone and out doing a clerics holy magic is a hilarious thought
I would be fine with home brewing the random potion into picking what you want as an additional feature at the next subclass level. The idea at first is that you are making test potions and figuring things out. By the time you have leveled up a few times, you have a more solid grasp on what you are doing.
I agree the Alchemist needs some tweaks to be good. Removing the random nature of the elixir is good, enabling a player to store a spell as an elixir is better. Literally brewing potions in preparation for various outcomes ahead of time.
I have a build only thing you need from dm is an all purpose tool and it’s doable without one. 1-4: play back line, open combat up shoving a potion down the damage dealer’s throat. Throw cantrips also pick up the alchemist jug infusion and start making vials of acid, your not going to need them to later but yeah. 5-8 Now you want your all purpose tool to use Sheligh Open combat casting flaming sphere and bonus action sheligh Round two booming blade a target and put your flaming sphere on them. You’re gonna want the mobile feat with this combo. 9-10 Your going to want to switch the ALL PURPOSE cantrip to acid splash Cast tiny servant that morning. First round of combat bonus action haste and cast firebolt, raw you should be able to all purpose acid splash And give your tiny servant a standing order to throw a vial of acid at whatever your attacking. 11-12 Same as 9-10 except you get a familiar and have them cast acid arrow with the spell storing item 13-16 Take summon construct and take the metal one. In combat: cast summon construct, bonus action sheligh, your construct attacks, you could switch your standing orders on your servant to attack the same target as the construct to get it to attack round, and your familiar attacks Round two you cast booming blade on somebody and if you don’t like that you just make your servant attack round one and cast fire bolt round two 17-20 Swapout construct with arcane hand for more versatility and less flavor
Some unique things that only Alchemist can do because I know half my build can be done with any artificer • Your the best healer given healing word, the restoration spells, the healing potion and the 9th lvl ability • Blight is always fun • Cloud Kill combos well with tiny servant and you can give the whole party familiar bats so it’s not a problem • concentration-less alter self makes you a great infiltrator along with your infusions if you build around it
I thought you could create extra elixirs after a rest using spells slots, but using the random table of course. I think that it is in Tasha’s cauldron of everything where it says that. Read through it last night while creating an artificer, but I may have misread.
8:30 the flavor on my Alchemist makes this even funnier because its not even some well measured or mixed mixture, just some generally measured out concoction that jumpstarts the bodies cellular processes somehow or other. Revivify is even funnier, since its just him with gloves connected to a chemical battery so hes basically a less controlled defibrillator
Largely agree, but you *can* in fact create an Experimental Elixir of your choice from the table with a level 1 spell slot, the random ones are just the freebies you get per long rest. But yeah, I agree that the subclass unfortunately leaves much to be desired. I strongly feel that the elixirs should scale a hefty amount since its competition is IRON MAN, ROBOT TANK, AND GUN. Also the class is half caster, so it'll always lose out in potential to full casters without some sizeable buffs if it's trying to specialize in something that a full caster could easily replicate without the need to specialize. Overall I love the Alchemist, I just wish it got more love on the cutting room floor.
I backed the 1st kobold quest and my old pc zimdrik boomstick the artillerist artficer is a npc in it my favorite part of the book if you meet him enjoy i loved him
I like the alchemist from Pathfinder and think 5e should have done that with this adding their own stuff to make it a bit different but bombs would be cool.
A middle ground on the random effect of the elixir could be a DC for getting what you want. Toss in the proficiency / Int bonus to hit that DC & you could show the gains in mastery of your craft until it's an auto pass at some point like say level 6 or w/e. Just an idea. Shame Portent is a D20 so it couldn't work here.
You are absolutely right about this subclass. I love artificer but am disappointed with alchemist. Thanks for sharing some quick fixes maybe I’ll finally make that brewmaster build I’ve been dreaming of. Imagine a gnome that can brew beer so good it can bring people back from the dead. 😂
I will always be disappointed that we didn't get the UA take on Alchemist, where you were "garbing" potions from a magical satchel and just throwing them at people, as it really feels more like what the Artificer is suppose to be. Like I don't dislike this version of the Alchemist (if needing some house rules), but it feels WAY more like it should have been a healing/support Wizard Subclass instead.
Okay hear me out: an alchemist who has devoted his life to eventually becoming the god… of soup. And all of his spells and potions are reflavored (hah) into various forms of stew and broth.
How come alchemy is now restricted to potions? Alchemy also includes transmutation of materials or changing the composition of certain objects or elements. Why restrict us to just random potion maker?
@@AtelierGod but there are other ways you could go about depicting it then. Have it be a setup incantation that requires materials to improve a base substance. Hell, these new substances could provide unique effects for items. There are options to do more and do them better. It just takes a second or two of thinking.
Instead of random potion effects, they could let us choose what potion we want to make then roll a D4 to determine how potent it would be then at lvl 5 and 15 we roll a d8 then d12 respectfully.
i'm sure i don't need to worry about a new homebrew subclass coming after the end of this season........ right? that's definitely coming, no IF's, AND's, or BUT's, right?
I wish Alchemist was better. I only played it once and it was cause I didn't wanna play a Cleric but we needed a healer. But then 2 clerics joined and 1 was a life domain so I was entirely pointless. And the DM was...weird about it. He had a house rule that his Artificers can make crazy stuff like nukes and missiles. So I thought, "Oh cool, so my guy can make like grenades in the DMG? I could probably be like a Grenadier to compensate for my limited damage output." "Sure... just tell me how it's made." Eh...what? "Yeah, if you want pipe bombs, you, the player should know exactly how to make one." I pointed out I can't make that stuff irl...I can make a gun and bullets irl but I dunno how to make bombs. Why should I have to know? I dunno how to make medicine, but my guy does.
The guy who cooks meth in my neighborhood is literally blaring deftones right now and cooking because his girlfriend left and I’m at home watching this on my tv

Honestly, the Alchemist is such a flavor fail imo. When you think of an alchemist, you think of someone who cannot only buff but debuff as well with poisons, explosives, etc. I feel like Experimental Elixir should have expanded out to creating bombs and the like as well
I think the Alchemist thrives when you play as an unhinged chaos goblin. While others research tomes or consult with divinity, you mix together some weird crap you left out overnight and achieve the same result, that’s hilarious. Round two booming blade a target and put your flaming sphere on them. You’re gonna want the mobile feat with this combo.

Your going to want to switch the ALL PURPOSE cantrip to acid splash
Cast tiny servant that morning.
First round of combat bonus action haste and cast firebolt, raw you should be able to all purpose acid splash And give your tiny servant a standing order to throw a vial of acid at whatever your attacking.
11-12
Same as 9-10 except you get a familiar and have them cast acid arrow with the spell storing item
13-16
Take summon construct and take the metal one.
In combat: cast summon construct, bonus action sheligh, your construct attacks, you could switch your standing orders on your servant to attack the same target as the construct to get it to attack round, and your familiar attacks
Round two you cast booming blade on somebody and if you don’t like that you just make your servant attack round one and cast fire bolt round two

It wouldn't be an alchemist guide without at least one potion seller joke.
Btw mixing all the soda fountain drinks is called a Graveyard
And honestly it’s better then you think (just ignore any sweet tea or lemonade)
When I grew up in the 80s, we called it a Suic!de.
Did it in the 90's as a kid
After Breaking Bad, to me Walter White is an Alchemist... Especially the sacrificing part.
Alchemist Artificer is the most consistent way of becoming a speedster tabaxi so im sad that wasnt mentioned
Ah yes the baja blaster
Use this class as an excuse to become scare crow from Batman and hurl vials of the fear toxin at enemies if you're dm allows you to
Here's hoping the Light Domain is in the next batch
I will always be disappointed that we didn't get the UA take on Alchemist, where you were "garbing" potions from a magical satchel and just throwing them at people, as it really feels more like what the Artificer is suppose to be.
Like I don't dislike this version of the Alchemist (if needing some house rules), but it feels WAY more like it should have been a healing/support Wizard Subclass instead.
That type of Alchemist is what Pathfinder has. They have throwables. If you are looking for that style
0:13 It’s a wild Miracle Musical reference?
Please do spore Druid
Okay hear me out: an alchemist who has devoted his life to eventually becoming the god… of soup. And all of his spells and potions are reflavored (hah) into various forms of stew and broth.
“Uh guys i accidentally made a potion that melts everything olease help!”
I love the artificer for the most part armor being my favorite followed by Artillerist and battles Smith alchemy is OK I hate the randomness
Warforged Alchemist, call me Fullmetal 😂
7:31 Though be careful cause this can cause a Calamity
How come alchemy is now restricted to potions?
Alchemy also includes transmutation of materials or changing the composition of certain objects or elements.
Why restrict us to just random potion maker?
Because that’s the transmutation wizards job.
@@AtelierGod but there are other ways you could go about depicting it then.
Have it be a setup incantation that requires materials to improve a base substance. Hell, these new substances could provide unique effects for items.
There are options to do more and do them better. It just takes a second or two of thinking.
I literally just finished Full Metal Alchemist and I feel very targeted (and I love it)
Trickery domain still playing pranks messing with the name of the video
I can't believe you didn't use that clip from The Martian where he says "I'll have to science the shit out of this".
Is it me or the title still says trickery domain.
Not anymore
I am going to be a potion seller that only sells the strongest potions
You got to light matches on fire? All we did when i took chemistry was watch podcasts with guided notes!
In terms of role-playing, could be fun... but i don't like the random elixir effects. They could've put elixir of strength, dex. Explosive potions
Glad to see this one but now that I know more about it, I no longer want to try alchemist.
Bring bottled badass to the battlefield.
From the glass
One could h
Just switch the scroll creation feat with half as many potions as scrolls or the same number. 3e had a create potion feat.
Instead of random potion effects, they could let us choose what potion we want to make then roll a D4 to determine how potent it would be then at lvl 5 and 15 we roll a d8 then d12 respectfully.
We can choose, only the free ones you get after a long rest is randomized.
Drink up, me party, YOLO!
What would happen if you multi-class the alchemist artificer with the “Mutant” Blood Hunter?
i'm sure i don't need to worry about a new homebrew subclass coming after the end of this season........ right? that's definitely coming, no IF's, AND's, or BUT's, right?
I smell chemical warfare
I wish Alchemist was better. I only played it once and it was cause I didn't wanna play a Cleric but we needed a healer. But then 2 clerics joined and 1 was a life domain so I was entirely pointless.
And the DM was...weird about it. He had a house rule that his Artificers can make crazy stuff like nukes and missiles. So I thought, "Oh cool, so my guy can make like grenades in the DMG? I could probably be like a Grenadier to compensate for my limited damage output."
"Sure... just tell me how it's made." Eh...what? "Yeah, if you want pipe bombs, you, the player should know exactly how to make one." I pointed out I can't make that stuff irl...I can make a gun and bullets irl but I dunno how to make bombs. Why should I have to know? I dunno how to make medicine, but my guy does.
And next you’ll likely hear you need to know how to cast spells in real life as well to cast spells in the game?
2:59 video starts here
The guy who cooks meth in my neighborhood is literally blaring deftones right now and cooking because his girlfriend left and I’m at home watching this on my tv
2 classes down, 12 to go.
Wot if splash posens delt damig for the glass😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Rest in peace to the alchemist class for not showing up the player’s handbook of DnD 2024.
Maybe the class will show up later down the road?
A breaking bad walter white dnd
I'm predicting that Eloquence Bard will win the next poll.... let's make it happen, who's with me?
scromptious potions
The template title you didn't catch in proofreading strikes again!
Varient Human, take Artificer Initiate, choose Alchemist Tools for your free tool proficiency, Alchemist 5, Wizard 15.
You're welcome.
i got really confused for a second there
So many missed opportunities for more Full Metal Alchemist jokes
Honestly, the Alchemist is such a flavor fail imo. When you think of an alchemist, you think of someone who cannot only buff but debuff as well with poisons, explosives, etc. I feel like Experimental Elixir should have expanded out to creating bombs and the like as well
Fire
Hey, the link in the description to the Kickstarter is broken. I think it's missing an "h".
Fixed! Thanks for the shout!
Love your videos but the background chorus was a little distracting
Oathbreaker Paladin pls
Normal alchemist players make hp. Potions and other useful potions
Me CHEMICAL WARFAREEEEEEEEEEEE
