  • Very first shots from my new Ruger Super Blackhawk with 5.5 inch barrel. I give a brief range review as I try a few different 44 Magnum and 44 Special loadings in the gun to demonstrate recoil characteristics.

I do not know whether your right handed or left-handed but in either case it doesn't matter. But cradle the firearm and your left hand and use your left hand to index the cylinder and that gun loads a lot easier with your right hand. These things are my favorite weapons, I actually own a 44 Blackhawk made in November of 1957 which is very light for a 44 Magnum. And I also own probably a dozen super Blackhawks old model and new.
When you get into reloading you will notice that the Hard Cash key style bullet has a cantalore which will allow you to load Magnum charges into the 44 special cartridge and you can load it to 44 magnum overall length. The ejector Rod length is exactly the same as on all of them with that gun. They don't make longer ejector rods with a longer Barrel. They never have.
And when I shoot mine I usually only load five, I have on a couple of occasions use that as a carry gun. What I have shot these a lot. I've been teaching shooting since 1970. Once again these are my favorite firearms. My favorite hunting load is 28 and a half grains of h110 behind a 180 grain Hollow point. It is blisteringly fast and it isn't the top load but it was also a very accurate load I don't want you. And I believe that's with the Sierra 180 grain but the truncated cone hollow point and 180 grain at about 1700 ft per second is probably going to be very effective.
I've seen some of the hollow point ammo in the last couple of years is only loaded to 44 special velocities I do not understand that. But then again I've seen 10 mm ammo only loaded two 40 Smith velocities and they're talking about oh it's 10 mm it's so much more powerful than 40 smith. It isn't. But then again in the 1980s 10 mm was coming out at 1400 1500 ft per second and the highest velocity 10 mm you can buy today is running what 12:50? This gun is not that heavy it's probably about the weight of a full size 1911 and I carry one of those on a regular basis.
The one that you have there is the Blackhawk version because it has the fluted cylinders. And it has the Blackhawk frame, and take your left hand out from under the bottom of the grip frame and put it like a regular Weaver grip. If you allow that gun to roll in your hand a little bit it makes it much easier to cock for the next shot. You can actually get very fast at shooting that and be quite accurate with it. But the actual Super Blackhawk grip frame is far more comfortable on that firearm. You say you've never owned one of those before, pick up one with the Dragoon style grip frame. Or have a Dragoon grip frame put on that gun. And that lever Evolution ammo looks really cool. It's starting to get into that recoil that my hand loads are usually set at.

The Bianchi speed strips, holding up to 6 rounds, make loading pretty easy too. That way you holding something larger than a single cartridge.

you know this is a pinned frame later model with the transfer bar ignition system & it maybe safely loaded with 6 rounds , it won't discharge when dropped , the old 3 screw early models should be safely loaded with only 5 so put 6 rounds in that gun.I have the blued version of that same pistol with 43/4" barrel , I have taken several deer & always carried with 6 rounds.... love it ....enjoy !

I have one just like that which I purchased some time ago and you're right, they are built like a Tank. Greatest thing about a 44 Mag is you can go from very light cowboy loads to massive firepower. Expect for a small population of handgun shooters, not to many folks can actually shoot effectively with a handgun more powerful than the 44 Mag.

@@BigRedPower59 I use a Hunter's Supply 200 gr Pentagon Hollow Point (PHP) lead bullet at about 1200 FPS for a self defense load in a 44 Mag case. Slots in between a full power 44 Special load and a full house 44 Mag load. Gives fairly consistent .700-.750 expansion in water jugs. Not the perfect medium for testing anything other than you have enough velocity for expansion, but it puts a ton of energy on target without the penetration and recoil. Developed this load to carry in a Taurus T44 Tracker with a 4" barrel. Very mild shooting in my 7.5" SBH.
