I like how the message runs parallel to the story, instead of the story being the result of the message the creator wants to tell.

As someone who has been writing their own TTRPG and wants to create a "Beyond-alike" to make it more accessible - I'd watch the hell out of a video or series giving some guidance on how you did that!
Congrats on creating your own very cool game and resources for it!

Unfortunately, I don't think my usual audience would have much patience for programming videos haha
But come hang around in the Discord server, we have a "computer nerds" channel where I often go into implementation details (...and complain about Firefox)

@Trekiros Hey, thanks for the quick response! I'll do that. No-code web design is already part of my day job, and I'm looking to learn some supplementary coding skills anyway. This feels like a good excuse to get started. 😅

I'd watch something about your design philosophy... multiple somethings... for multiple hours... and I think it's far more important than the programming. Since programs for these types of games fundamentally exist to help you keep track of things and such, I'd think they'd be more simple than, say, making an actual computer game. There's the whole website backend and such that obviously needs some real skill, but I think the real treasure is the design. Can't wait to watch more about this.

Am reading through the rules currently, will come back to edit this comment as I get further with my thoughts! Just finished Basic Rules so I’ll start with them.
    Basic Rules:
    - I found it interesting that the attribute values only go from 0-5, and that you have a 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 specifically to use, rather than being given a certain amount of points to use and restrictions against making a bunch really high/low. Since I’ve only been reading the rules, I don’t know how this would play out in a game, but I personally prefer more choice. Though compared to other tabletop rpg games I can see this system being easier to understand, unlike DnD’s system which confuses a lot of new players. I also think limiting it to 0-5 could have a few side effects, if there’s levelling/another sort of progression then the growth in these scores are likely incredibly slow, or else you could get extremely high and powerful characters quickly, and there’s less inbetween within the characters’ skill with their attributes. With the combined low range and strict 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 allocation I could see it being likely that multiple characters might have similar attribute score spreads. Though, without having played it yet, I have no idea
    - The cost/payoffs for Short Rests. This one I think is more advice? than the comment above. The cost for a short rest is 5 biomass and a long rest is 10, but for a short rest you only regain 1 hit point while long rest you regain all. I feel that either the biomass cost for a short rest should be decreased, or the reward and time it takes should be increased, because the only reason you wouldn’t go for a long rest is if you really don’t have much time or really don’t have that much biomass, when these reward differences are so large.
    - This one is a big positive, I LOVE how you did character ‘deaths’. Having options for the character to possibly eventually come back but with scars/marks of their near end, or even letting you leave it up to the Plot Twister with the option for the character to come back on the opposing side, I found so fun? Not sure how to describe it, but I feel it will make the game ultimately less stressful, knowing that if a character you loved playing were to ‘die’ they could still come back, but also with a penalty and time between them just immediately being revived. It felt like a perfect way to implement the mechanic
Am off to read the next section, will report back with new/updated thoughts!
    Edit:
I’m going to add to this as I go through this sections, as using the rules I’m going to slowly build a character, and at the end of the section try out the character to fill in anything left. I’m going to build a character at level 1 (or if there’s a rule similar to subclasses I’ll build at the level that comes into play)
    Character Creation:
    Background
    - Nothing particularly negative to point out, I enjoyed the variety and uniqueness of all the tables included, especially the name lists and jobs. Rather than rolling, I picked out from each table which one I wanted to create a more cohesive character I could build a story around, and my choices from these are as follows:
    Age - 23 (8 before the Flare)
Name - Viktor (thanks Arcane brainrot)
Job - Tattoo Artist/Writer (haven’t decided which, will wait to see future mechanics options to set in stone)
Bonds with the Party - I owe someone a debt (Not making this with anyone, if I was I would have to check with them about it, but this seems fitting so far)
Personality Traits - Sociable, Foul-Mouthed, An Improviser (I imagine him being Foul-Mouthed but not in a negative/aggressive way, more like ‘that’s f-ing awesome!’. Kind of a chill, relaxed guy that made a mistake pre or early Flare causing him to owe someone a debt)
Goals - I’m sick, I want to make an impact before I die (can’t help it, it’s Viktor and the arcane brainrot. Though I imagine this sickness might be a fantasy one brought on by the Flare, possibly he started improvising with new substances for tattoo inks soon after and that caused it? Something slowly chipping away at him, rather than majorly impacting him constantly)
Quirks - I have a prosthetic limb, I’m in charge of the party’s playlist. There’s one called “we need to run”. (Both just seemed fitting. I imagine the prosthetic might have existed pre-Flare, but post-Flare he modified it to work as a tattoo-pen, or has a switch to make it transform into one)
So far really enjoying it! Character creation is always my favourite part of any RPG and I’m getting a good idea of how my character will turn out. Will give my thoughts of the abilities section of Character Creation soon!
    Edit 2:
Finished reading Abilities, I’ll count the trees as a subclass-type mechanic, so when I go through the character builder I’ll make my character a level where these tree mechanics come more into play, that way I can share more thoughts about them. So far I’m intrigued, but will need to read more about each one and what they do before I create a more elaborate opinion. Onto Starting Equipment!
    Edit 3:
Just finished reading the starting equipment, I like that you offered not just a standard recommendation for starting equipment, but also specifics for different attributes. Before I go into the character builder, I’ll say what I’m planning on placing as my attributes
    Presence - 4
    Technique - 3
    Grit - 2
    Luck - 1
    Speed - 0
This is where I’d like more options to move around where I place these points. I don’t see my character as being really slow or really charismatic, if I had the ability to change them i’d made presence 3 and speed 1. The only reason why luck is 1 rather than speed is I don’t see my character as being particularly unlucky, if unlucky at all, aside from the Flare happening. He’s also not extremely slow but I could possibly see him more taking his time than being unlucky. Still, the option would be nice. I don’t mind having attributes being low, I actually enjoy and encourage having things you’re bad at with characters, but forcing a player to have one be a zero just feels a little bad. I’ll now go through the Character Builder to flesh out everything else, and I’ll report back with my choices!
    Edit 4:
Went through character creation, took a while. I read through all the options currently available and they all seemed really interesting, I ended up choosing Silver-Tongues, Elbow Greese, and Lockpicking for Skills and Ambusher and Bot for Perks. I have one perk left, and I’m debating between a Techie Teir 2 or one from Tinkerer Teir 1. I’m going to continue reading the rules to learn more about what each will do, and I’ll edit with my thoughts on them and come back to my final perk and inventory choices at the end. Next update may be a while, need a break after spending so long on this, but I’ll add it eventually!

Wild. Im working on a game called Ashes of Empire and its triggering apocalypse is the super nova of a nearby star creating supernatural effects like the undead rising and rifts in reality. My setting is more near apocalypse, only 3 years afterwards in 2030. The themes of mine have more to do with supernatural and gonzo mad science run amok (the world was in a mad arms race of absurd proportion and paranoia up to the Hungry Star cataclysm).

Well done. Back when zombie apocalypse (zpoc) fiction was red-hot, a LOT of people writing it completely forgot that the zombies aren't the story, aren't the setting, aren't the themes. They were elemental, no different from a massive natural disaster like you're working with. The true draw of the zpoc is the narratives between the characters. There is a VERY fine line between entertaining, character-driven genre fiction and unabashedly bad soap opera. Riding that razor's edge is what sets the true craftsmen from the posers.

There's basically two approaches to printing: "print on demand" and "offset printing".
Print on Demand is what you get on Amazon and DriveThruRPG - books are printed one by one, as needed. Offset printing is what you get from companies like Mixam or PrintNinja, and it consists in doing one big print run of 1000 or more books at once, to benefit from the economies of scale. So it usually results in both cheaper production costs, and higher quality books... But much more complex logistics for storing & shipping the books.
These logistics are a bit outside of my area of expertise (I already wear a LOT of hats between youtube, software development, game design & art directin)... So whenever the game is finished, I plan on getting in touch with publishing companies to help me with this.
For smaller projects, if you aren't sure you can hit the critical mass where offset printing becomes worth it, go for print on demand instead - that's what I did for Home-Field Advantage for example.
For the book's art, I managed to snatch Jean Curci & Kevin Hlaing, whom you might know as the power duo behind last year's Monsoon 5e setting on Kickstarter.

@@Trekiros the reason why I asked these questions is because I have a table top RPG core book I’m working on as well as five modules for five separate campaign endings 300 monsters for the basic core book and a beast that gives you 100 more additional creatures so far have around 75 characters trying to reach a goal of at least 150 characters which shouldn’t be that hard because 75 is already within the city and the technophobic regions will probably be around 75 Then combining a blend of game mechanics at the majority of people do not approach in the way I am doing it, streamline things as well as me being the only person doing all this😅 but hey, I’m pumping out characters left and right creatures left and right even game mechanics. I got pretty flushed out for the most simplistic of stuff at least my newer game mechanics.

Sounds very fun. I will be following closely. I am curious how you are going to balance simplistic design with detailed fun.
What dice are you thinking about using? Is this a d20 system or something else? Is this going to be a class based game or skill based? So many questions but love the base story concept

Lmao the description worked. I do like to read books though. I must admit I have a hard time situating a "character concept" in the near sci-fi setting. Like, would a mid-combat healer be a thing in this game? Is combat deadly? I gather the characters are tough, but can you just right off the bat assume you have drones or something?

Great work on the website. I wonder how mobile phones would work if all of the electronics have been fried?

    • @Trekiros
      @Trekiros  2 วันที่ผ่านมา

Radio waves pretty much only work within line of sight, and only during the night
There are still radio towers at the top of various skyscrapers, but the electrical grid they were plugged into is offline, and the servers telling them what to broadcast have fried.
So one common adventure hook is to climb at the top of a skyscraper, plug a new power source and a new computer into an existing radio tower, and now your faction has access to radio communication within a ~10 miles radius.
...And of course sometimes that skyscraper is filled with mutant monsters. Or, an antenna you set up last month might have become the target of a gang of raiders. These skyscrapers often act as the game's dungeons :p
The GM Guide is still in the very early stages but yeah radio antennas are super important to the setting

Given the fact that skyscrapers are a major source of challenge, I imagine flight is very rare or limited?

@Sting-me1hz yup pretty rare - you might be able to find working helicopters and planes every now and then, but would you trust your life to a 20 year old heli that hasn't been maintained since the apocalypse? And with a pilot who's probably never taken flight lessons? :p
