    The TDK AD and SAs were excellent, used to have a lot of those back in the day.
    Fair play to you recycling these and not letting them go to landfill.
    I do sometimes consider getting back into cassettes although my deck is long gone.
    Interesting video.

      Thanks very much.
      I picked up another big batch of cassettes shortly after this (another video coming soon), so I've been more interested in tapes lately too. I put many of these on eBay because they're not my taste, but keeping them out of landfill is not profitable and very time consuming.

    The tape concaving can easily be fixed by playing it back and it smooths out, at least that’s what I’ve found with all tapes I’ve bought second hand

    • @CBitsTech
      @CBitsTech  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ah, that's a simple fix. I'll try that, thanks.

      Yep exactly this, some tapes that haven't been rewond before getting stored for goodness knows how many years the part exposed starts to take the shape of the tape guieds, which are concave, that's why it happens, tape stretching is rarer than you think and only has a slight risk of happening if 3 conditions happen at the same time, 1,the take up weel turner pulls way too hard, 2, the alto stop feature doesn't work properly and the pinch roller keeps pulling the tape (that's why there's strong thicker coloured plastic tape each end of the tape to help prevent that) 3, the tape or tape player is really hot, (car tape decks sometimes suffered with that especially in the hot climates)

      Makes sense, thanks. I picked up another haul recently (video coming soon), and winding most of the tapes takes a long time. I don't want to use a good deck, so I use two cheaper ones but they don't have auto-stop on winding, that worries me.

    • @3dsstreetpassfan133

      @@CBitsTech the tape player you used in this video would be perfect for winding them, you can place it next to you as you carry on doing things or using the computer/laptop etc, that way you can check to make sure all goes fine

    Wow! Great haul. I agree, keep the good ones and sell those you’re not interested in. I remember most of those tapes. I had some Boots tapes but I can’t remember anything about the quality except they perished years ago so I assume not so good.

      Thanks. I picked up another haul shortly after, but mainly blank tapes. Video coming soon.
      I since remembered that I have over 30 Boots tapes I bought myself, including some Chrome ones. I might do a follow-up video on those too, and see if they survived.

    Do the smell test, true chrome tape has the smell of Crayons 🖍 the other type 2 that doesn't smell like crayons might be doped.

    I used to swap cassettes with a friend of mine back in the 70s and early 80s and he often used to give me Boots cassettes. They were usually poor quality and tended to break easily with the C-120s being the worst of the lot as the tape was very thin. The inlay card design looks different to the ones I remember so I would guess it would be mid to late 80s. Many of the chain stores used to sell their own brands such as WH Smith but I tended to give these a wide berth.

      Thanks for the info. I think I know the other Boots design you're talking about. You reminded me that I have Lord of the Rings unabridged on Boots ferric and Type II. I might dig them out for a future video and have a look.

    If you ever find audio books I'm always on the lookout to listen on my Walkman when travelling. I'll check out your ebay link. I wonder if the 'concave' tape is from playing in the car stereo? Just a thought.

    • @CBitsTech
      @CBitsTech  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have one listing of audio books on my eBay at the moment. Not sure how good they are.
      I've since found out that the concave tape is just degeneration due to being exposed for years.

    nice score i also find lots like these but i mainly look for the blank tapes as i collect those and if any pre recorded ones have chrome tape i record onto them any other prerecorded tapes as they are mainly junk i pull all the tape out everywhere just for fun. for some reason i always seam to get a beatles tape in the lots i buy and yes it gets destroyed by pulling the tape out of it.

    • @CBitsTech
      @CBitsTech  ปีที่แล้ว

      I never thought of recording on the chrome pre-recorded ones, but I have plenty of blank tales anyway chrome doesn't make much difference to me.
      I wouldn't destroy a tape for fun though, someone might like it, and they're not making them anymore.

    Um think trying to sell 72 cassettes you got for free on ebay for £300 is a bit taking the wee wee! Cding 2 were the b grade sa at the time. Some say that they were the edge of the rolls, Not that much Type 1 cassettes are made anymore and no type 2 ( Technically NAC are making C756 but i havent actually see one, even a sample which i think speaks volumes) so we are stuck with the old stuff.

    • @CBitsTech
      @CBitsTech  ปีที่แล้ว

      The lady that gave them to me said she didn't care what happened to them, she just wanted to get rid of them and didn't want to put them in landfill. I checked if it was okay to sell anything I didn't want, and she said she was okay with it. I had no idea the box included these cassettes. I doubt they will fetch £300, and I do intend to donate an amount to the not-for-profit organisation I arranged the pickup through.
      And yes, we're stuck with the old stuff. I've learned more about cassettes in the last few years than I knew when they were most popular. It's an interesting hobby.

    • @stevewhitcher6719
      @stevewhitcher6719 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CBitsTech The problem is that people see these crazy prices and then try to sell stuff at a similar price. I have been known to buy cassettes at car boots, sometimes someone would have a box full and they ask for a crazy price. I got fed up when i would laugh and you would get "well on ebay" and someone would show a listing with a BIN, i gave up explaining that a BIN price is very different from a what actually sold. Now i wave a hand at them and ask how much are these? And get a reply before i start looking through them. I mean i'm quite happy to pay a fiver for a still wrapped type II but for a used pre-recorded that has been in the loft 25p is a more reasonable price.

    • @CBitsTech
      @CBitsTech  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, almost all used cassettes are a bit chewed at the start of each side. It's only if you're lucky enough to get some from someone who knew how to service their deck that you get good used ones.
      I'm sitting looking at five decks and only one of them works well and even that runs a bit fast. I really need to have a clear out.

    The only downside is people didn't rewind the tape back & the tape Crinkles up & you would get dropouts or lose a channel it's highly annoying

    • @CBitsTech
      @CBitsTech  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I've since figured out it's just where the tape has degraded where it was exposed.
      I've listened to many of these now and didn't notice dropouts.
