  • We climbed the Goatfinger Couloir (north face couloir) on Mount Edwards in mid-June 2024 in Colorado's Arapaho National Forest. Mount Edwards, a 13,860-foot summit, shares a trailhead with famed 14ers Grays and Torreys Peaks.
It surprises me the Goatfinger Couloir isn't a more popular climb among couloir enthusiasts. This one has it all--easy access, challenging climb, very steep (55 degrees near the top), and aesthetics.
On the rocky approach, we saw goats and pikas. The climb starts on a gentle slope entering the couloir. As you go up, the couloir narrows and the slope angle steepens. The snow was really solid all the way up--very little postholing. Near the top, the couloir turns to the right and were able to utilize some easy mixed climbing skills on the rock. Finally, we exited on the summit ridge, a short walk from the true summit.
We chose to descend via the Grays Peak standard trail after traversing the mile-long ridge towards Grays. The wildlife was abundant on the ridge and below, including more goats and pikas, and many marmots.
