  • In the first episode of #QuarterMaster, 'India: A million opportunities now', investment guru Saurabh Mukherjea of Marcellus Investment Managers tells ThePrint’s Managing Editor YP Rajesh how GST, the telecom revolution, better transportation connectivity and people's own aspirations are helping India integrate economically and that in turn is helping businesses grow, giving investors new opportunities.

At ones where its hard to get parents to be ready for the stock markets, mine lived through 90's fiasco - drove them away from markets - permanently, came to time when quality of life (far better from roti/kapda/makaan), life expectancy is rising and retirement planning has become essential. Beautifully explained by Saurabh, and thank you YP Rajesh for this precious interview.

Saurabh never talk about new age businesses like internet companies, EV, Fintech...he is hell bent on fundamentals. Relies on historical financial data to take a call on investment. As a retail investor we are definitely not in position to judge if the promoters are genuine. And I think that is good enough. We never know whether Nykaa, Policybazaar or new companies will ever make money. They have not earn anything in past. So we have to wait and watch, study their financial performance for couple of quarters/years before investing in them.

I don't agree with Saurabh's explanation that India's growth can be very simply explained due to US recession - that is as bonkers as asking what is the link between GDP and stock market performance. US economic performance is just of one the influencers of India's GDP growth, not a "necessry and sufficient condition" as claimed by him. I think in an effort to oversimply, he has missed the wood for the trees

Having read Naipul's India trilogy around the same time as Mr Mukherjea and recently Diamonds in Dust after PRINT's reco show, one feels the parallels being drawn here (and earlier with Dravid) are selective in the storytelling. Many different stories using the same parallels can be told - question is which ones will turn out to be right. This only time can tell - hopefully Mr. Mukherjea & Marcellus will be around in 20years and will come back to recount to PRINT.

Although the idea is absurd that demonetization was good, I will read the paper and judge for myself. I feel so sad that happens.. people really need to learn fundamental analysis in finance.. that is the government's policy approach right now.. investing not to show inflated gdp which the leftists keep crying about but doing groundwork that is welfarism
